  • A study on the distribution and mortality of eggs and larvae of anchovy. Engraulis japonica, was carried out on the basis of data collected from ichthyoplankton survey in the southern coastal waters of Korea from June to August in 1990. Egg and larval distribution areas were shifted from the adjacent waters of Namhae Is, to the eastern waters of Goeje Is, while eggs and larvae were developed in June. However, high densities of eggs and larvae of anchovy and were found near Goeje Is. in July. Anchovy eggs and larvae were correlated significantly with zooplankton in July, and were not in June and August. It is likely that the low instantaneous mortality coefficients in eggs and high values in the larvae during June and high values in eggs and low values in the larvae during July were affected by the distribution pattern of zooplankton.

  • For this study, we carried out a field survey on the analysis for the spatial distributions of phytoplankton community in the eleven areas of the Korean South Sea during the early summer of 2018. The results from the study showed that the phytoplankton community consisted of 56 genera and 105 species showing by diatoms with 52.4%, dinoflagellates with 40.0% and other phytoflagellates with 7.6%. The cell density of the phytoplankton ranged from 5.5 to 593.2 cells mL-1. The species number and cell density of the phytoplankton were high in the eastern waters of the South Sea and low in the western one. The phytoplankton community showed the characteristics of being dominated by the diatoms except in the Geumpo of Namhae, Ocheon-dong of Yeosu and Oenarodo of Goheung. The dominant species of the phytoplankton community were the centric diatoms, Skeletonema costatum-like species (ls), except for the Ocheon-dong and Chungdo of Wando. However, the Ocheon-dong was dominated by toxic dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium catenatum by 41.1% dominance. On the other hand, Keumpo and Oenarodo was by dinoflagellate, Tripos fusus more than 12% dominance in the surface layer. The spatial distribution of the phytoplankton community in the coastal waters of the Korean South Sea in the early summer were determined by the supply of nutrients through precipitation.

  • For the purpose of examining the distribution of organic matter in the nearshore surface sediments of Korea, organic carbon, nitrogen, ignition loss, chemical oxygen demand, phaeopigment and total sulphide for 117 surface sediments were measured and analyzed in February, 1993. Organic carbon and nitrogen contents ranged from $0.03\%\;to\;5.41\%$ (average $1.08\%$) and from $0.01\%\;to\;0.44\%$ (average $0.18\%$), respectively. The highest contents with the average $2.18\%$ organic carbon and $0.23\%$ nitrogen were found in the eastern part of the southern coast, while the lowest contents with the average $0.17\%$ organic carbon and $0.03\%$ nitrogen in Kunsan coastal area covering from Kum river to Dongjin river. The principal component analysis using all measured data distinguished the western coast from the eastern part of the southern coast clearly according to organic matter contents, that is, the degree of eutrophication in the sediments. Pusan harbor and the mouth of Masan Bay had high C/N ratio that might be resulted from the input of terrestrial sewage and industrial wastewater. A high concentration of total sulphide distinguished the surface sediment of Masan Bay from that of other areas.

  • An analysis of the coastal water temperature in the Tongyeong waters, the eastern sea of the South Sea of Korea, revealed that the water temperature rose sharply before the typhoon made landfall. The water temperature rise occurred throughout the entire water column. An analysis of the sea surface temperature data observed by NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) satellites, indicated that sea water with a temperature of 30℃ existed in the eastern waters of the eastern South Sea of Korea before the typhoon landed. The southeastern sea of Korea is an area where ocean currents prevail from west to east owing to the Tsushima Warm Current. However, an analysis of the satellite data showed that seawater at 30℃ moved from east to west, indicating that it was affected by the Ekman transport caused by the typhoon before landing. In addition, because the eastern waters of the South Sea are not as deep as those of the East Sea, the water temperature of the entire water layer may remain constant owing to vertical mixing caused by the wind. Because the rise in water temperature in each water layer occurred on the same day, the rise in the bottom water temperature can be considered as owing to vertical mixing. Indeed, the southeastern sea of Korea is a sea area where the water temperature can rise rapidly depending on the direction of approach of the typhoon and the location of high temperature formation.

  • Short-term variations of phytoplankton community structure in the southeast coastal waters of Korea from July to September in 2006 were investigated with data set of phytoplankton, chemical and physical water properties, and meterological data. A total of 11 sampling sites of 4 different depths (surface, 5 m, 10 m, and bottom) were visited on July 11-14, July 24-26, August 7-10, August 21-24 and September 5-8. We identified 151 species in 63 genera of phytoplankton in which diatoms were the most diverse group composed of 92 species in 37 genera. Dinoflagellates were the second diverse group of 52 species in 22 genera. The other groups include 7 species in 4 genera including Raphidophytes, and Euglenophyta. After rainy season, excessive nutrients from adjacent streams to the stratified water column proliferates Chaetoceros group in July. But biomass of phytoplankton and nutrient concentrations were decreased during the period of a drought in August. However, Chaetoceros was the most dominant genera in all depths of the first, second, third and fifth cruises, except the 4th cruise on August 21-24 when dominant group were dinoflagellates including Gymnodinium spp. and Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The characteristic of phytoplankton community and environment condition during summer 2006 can be summarized as: 1) low concentration of nutrients caused by a long lasting drought in August 2) no summer outbreak of C. polykrikoides because the strength of offshore waters was weak than other years, and 3) Chaetoceros spp. was the dominant species despite short period appearance of dinoflagellates.

  • In August 1996, seawater salinity and nutrient distribution were investigated at surface waters in the South Sea of Korea. The low-salinity (< 20.00 psu) waters were observed in the western and southwestern offshore areas of Cheju Island. Relatively low saline (< 30.0 psu) waters occupied most of the survey areas only except in the eastern part. The observed minimum salinity was lower by 11.78 psu than that of the average between 1963 and 1995. The low saline waters appeared in the upper layer of generally 10-20 m deep, and were obriously distinguished from high-salinity (> 32.00 psu) waters, 30 m deep. The low saline waters may originate from the freshwater discharge of vast amount of from Yangtze River during the heavy rainfall season in China. Phosphate concentrations in the surface waters were relatively low and were less variable than those of nitrate and silicate. The maximum concentrations of nitrate and silicate occured in the western and southwestern offshore areas of Cheju Island, where the salinities were the lowest. The concentrations of nitrate and silicate were inversely correlated with salinity, whereas that of phosphate showed a considerable scatter and non-conservative behaviours. This indicates extensive desorption reactions of suspended materials releasing phosphate.

  • Physiochemical characters of sea waters during summer flood- and winter dry-seasons and their spatial variations were investigated along the coastal area off the eastern South Sea, Korea. Using the hierarchical clustering method, in this study, we present comprehensive analyses of coastal waters masses and their seasonal variations. The results revealed that the coastal water of the study area was classified into six water masses (A to F). During summer season, the surface water was mainly occupied by the coastal pseudo-estuarine water (water mass B) with low salinity and high nutrients and the river-dominated coastal water (water mass C) with low nutrients, respectively. The bottom water was dominated by cold water (water mass D) with very low temperature, high salinity and high nutrients, compared to masses of surface water. Notably, the water mass B, with high concentrations of nutrients (silicate and nitrogen) and low salinity, which is strongly controlled by the water quality of river freshwater, seems to play an important role in controlling the water quality and further regulating physical processes on ecosystem in the eastern coastal area of South Sea. The water mass D (bottom cold water) coupled with a strong thermocline, which exists in near-bottom layer along the western margin of Korea Strait, has a low temperature, pH and DO, but abundant nutrients. This water mass disappears in winter owing to strong vertical mixing, and subsequently may act as a pool for nutrients during winter dry-season. On the other hand, vertically well-mixed water column during the winter season was typically occupied by the Tsushima (water mass E) and the coastal water (water mass F) with a development of coastal front formed in a transition zone between them. These winter water masses were characterized by low nutrient concentration and balance in N/P ratio, compared with summer season with high nutrient concentrations and strong N-limitation. Accordingly, the analysis of water masses will help one to better chemical and biological processes in coastal area. In most of the study area, characteristically, the growth of phytoplankton community is limited by nitrogen, which is clearly different with coastal environment of West Sea of Korea, with a relative lack of phosphorus. It showed the western and the southern coasts in Korea are substantially different from each other in environmental and ecological characteristics.

  • The temperature inversions were studied on the basis of Digital Memory Bathythermography(DBT) data collected by training ship, Pusan 402, of the National Fisheries University of Pusan in August 23~25, 1986 and Fisheries Reserach and Development Agency of Korea in August, 1986, The results were as follows; Among the 67 stations of studied area, occurrence frequency of temperature inversion was 58.20%, And the frequency of onefold occurrence of temperature inversion at its profile of each station was 13.42%. of twofold occurrence was 20.80%, and of threefold occurrence was 23.88%. In the studied area, the temperature inversion usually occurred below the 40m depth and its layers also located below the thermocline. The temperature range of its inversion was from 14$^{\circ}C$ to 16$^{\circ}C$. The temperature inversion in the study area was oaused by the interaction between Tsushima Warm Current and Korea Coastal Waters.
