  • This paper examines the effects of children related variables on the life satisfaction of the rural elderly. Data for this study were based on a study of 203 elderly people residing in Kyungnam, Korea. Elderly male achieved higher scores in life satisfaction than their female counterparts. Demographic variables, except for subjective financial status, failed to account for the significant variance in life satisfaction. There were gender differences on the effects of children related variables on life satisfaction. Number of children was significantly associated with the life satisfaction of the male elderly. For the female elderly, affectional solidarity and associational solidarity were significant Predictors to their life satisfaction. Associational solidarity had the strongest effect on life satisfaction of both male and female elderly. The results from this study suggest the relative importance of children related variables to the rural elderly.

  • This study examines the mediating effects of social support on the relationship between health status and depression of the elderly in Korea. Through stratified multi-state random sampling, 1409 individuals aged 65 and over who lived in Seoul and Chunchen, and who had their own children were selected. Social support was composed of three types: emotional support, instrumental and financial support, and included both support-received from and provided to children. The multiple regression model proposed by Kenny and Baron was used. As the results, first, the elderly get more depressed when having lower health status and lower social support. Second, there is a partial mediating effect of social support in association with health status and depression. Comparing by gender, instrumental support received from children, and emotional and instrumental support provided to children are mediators in the link between health status and depression in the case of male. In the case of female, emotional, instrumental and financial support received from children, and instrumental and financial support provided to children shows the mediating effects between health status and depression. The results suggest that social support both received from and provided to children reduces the negative impacts of health status on depression of the elderly in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how relatively young old men become old people after retirement and how they view their forthcoming old age. We interviewed the aspects of lives of the 10 relatively young old men to attain the purpose. According to the interviews, it was difficult to get a job after retirement in our society even though they wanted to do. This paper focuses on how the process of lowering their expectation to work happened, how they viewed their forthcoming old age during the process. One of the results showed that whenever they had failed to attain a job, they had been asked to lower their expectation of work. It seemed that their expectation to work became weak. But the process of exclusion of social role took away not only their expectation to work but also their plan for the future. As a result, the gap between an individual who wanted to be younger and the society which made them older made to decrease the degree of satisfaction.

The average of self esteem and death anxiety were 3.3±0.58 and 2.5±0.32. Self esteem and death anxiety showed a significant negative correlation(r=-.173, p=.024). Gender(male) was the most significant predictor of death anxiety(β =.199, p=.009) and self esteem was the second predictor of death anxiety(β =-.171, p=.023). Gender(male) and self esteem explained total 5.8%(F=6.238, p=.002) of death anxiety. We demonstrated that gender(male) plays an important role in death anxiety in rural elderly. The finding of this study indicate a need to design and implement gender-specific interventions to reduce death anxiety through increasing self esteem in rural elderly.

  • The present study aimed to examine the moderating effects of marital satisfaction (MS) on the association between the number of chronic disease (CD) and depressive symptoms (DS) among ol der men and women. The 6th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing was utilized and the sample was married men (N=585) and women (N=460) aged 65 and over. Multiple regression analysis using SPSS WIN 25.0 and Process Macro was used to test moderating effects of MS. Control variables were age, education, household income, parent-child relationship satisfaction, self-rated health, cognitive function, current smoking status and CD of spouse. Resul ts from elderly men showed the moderating effect of MS was significant. Specifically, those with more CD were more likely to report higher level of DS in the low MS group. However, the effect of CD on DS was not significant in the high MS group. Results from elderly women showed the moderating effect of MS was not significant. This study showed the moderating effect of MS on the association between CD and DS differed by gender in later life. It suggests practical intervention to utilize the resources of spouses is in need to promote mentally healthy aging even though having chronically ill in later life.
