  • It is known that some amount of loss in impact energy takes place due to some limitations and problems during the performance of the field SPT. Actual energy level tractsferred to the rod should be measured to correct the SPT-N values tested in the field In this paper, the ratio of energy transferred to the rod through the anvil to impact energy is measured by using sharpy impact test equipment and also analysed by using GRL-WEAP This result is certified and compared with that of field SPT As the results of this study, the average rod energy ratio of the R-P hammer and the Trip hammer is calculated at 0.726 and 0.728 respectively, but it is suggested that 0.72 should be used. By using the hammer energy ratio 64.2% and 75.0% obtained from field measurement, the average energy ratio of the SPT for the R-P hammer is calculated at 46.7% and 54.5% for the Trip hammer.

  • Fiber metal laminates, which are hybrid materials consisting of metal sheets and composite layers, have contributed to aerospace and automotive industries due to their reduced weight and improved damage tolerance characteristics. In this study, the impact performance of the laminates, which are comprised of a self-reinforced polypropylene and two aluminum sheets, and the pure aluminum alloy sheet material were investigated experimentally via numerical simulation. In order to compare the impact performance, the laminates and aluminum alloy were examined by assessing the impact force, energy time histories, and specific energy absorption. ABAQUS is a commercial software that is used to simulate the actual drop-weight tests. Based on this study, it is noted that the impact performance of the laminates was superior to that of the aluminum alloy. In addition, a good agreement between the experimental and numerical results can be achieved when the impact force and energy time histories from the experiments and the numerical simulations are compared.

  • When there is a spray flow such as from a pesticide nozzle, winds affect the droplet flow of a rotary-wing drone accompanied by a strong wake, with a severe oscillation. Especially, during forwarding flights or when winds come from the side, compare to a simple hovering flight as the droplet is in the effect of aerodynamic drag force, the effect of spraying region becomes even larger. For this reason, the spraying of pesticides using drones may cause a greater risk of scattering or a difference in droplet dispersion between locations, resulting in a decrease in efficiency. Therefore, through proper numerical modeling and its applied simulation, an indication tool is required applicable for the various flight and atmospheric conditions. In this research, we completed both experiment and numerical analysis for the strong downwash from the rotor and flight velocity of the drone by comparing the probability density function of droplet distribution to build a spraying system that can improve the efficiency when spraying droplets in the pesticide spray drone.

  • Recently, shipyards are making many efforts to reduce the number of the mounted blocks by increasing the block size. This is to improve productivity and reduce related costs by minimizing block movement and shortening the building period. However, as the blocks become larger, the weight increases considerably. If the target block has a damage due to an unexpected accident during block lifting, it may seriously cause a problem of the reusability of the block. In this study, a large-sized block of the offshore structure weighing 480 tons was lifting with a total of seven sling belts, and one sling belt was broken while it was moving, resulting in a situation in which a part of the edge of the block collided with the ground. The aim of this paper is to verify the structural integrity of the block that directly collides with the ground in the form of free fall due to the sling breakage. Considering that the hook loads acting on several sling belts holding the block are redistributed when a sling belt is broken, the hook loads were recalculated at the angle just before the sling breakage. These loads were used to check the safety of the sling belts. In addition, FE analysis was performed by calculating the amount of impact from the free fall condition, obtaining the impact area by using Hertz's contact theory, and then applying the impact load to the area.

  • When a free-falling ballistic missile intercepts a maritime target in a sea clutter environment at high grazing angle, detection performance of the ballistic missile's seeker can be rapidly degraded by the effect of sea clutter. To solve this problem, it is necessary to verify the performance of maritime target detection via simulations based on various scenarios. We accomplish this by applying a two-dimensional cell -averaging constant false alarm rate detector to a two-dimensional radar image, which is generated by merging a sea clutter signal at high grazing angle with a maritime target signal corresponding to the signal-to-clutter ratio. Simulation results using a computer-aided design model and commercial numerical electromagnetic solver in various scenarios show that the performance of maritime target detection significantly depends on the grazing and azimuth angles.

  • The cosmetic industry is technology-intensive in the field of fine chemistry and continues to grow globally. The functional aspects have been mainly emphasized in the past to increase the market share in these cosmetics industries. Recently, however, efforts have been made to attract the attention of consumers to the visual effects as well as the excellent performance of cosmetics at home and abroad. Accordingly, cosmetic manufacturers are trying various technologies that encapsulate the cosmetic emulsion and modify the shape, color, and texture of the emulsion capsule. The basic and easiest method of encapsulating emulsion is dropping the emulsion through the nozzle from emulsion storage. On the other hand, the existing method of encapsulating emulsion has a limit in reducing the size of the capsule. In this study, the limit was shown by theory and numerical analysis method, and the emulsion encapsulation phenomena occurring in the micro-channel were studied to apply microfluidics as an alternative.

  • Pyrotechnic separation devices have been widely used as holding and release mechanism for deployable appendage. However, pyro-shock can cause temporal or permanent damage on shock sensitive components such as electronics, mechanism, and brittle components. This study proposed a low-stiffness blade based passive shock absorber using a multi-layered stiffener laminated with viscoelastic acrylic tapes for reducing transmitted pyro-shock upon explosion of pyrotechnic separation devices. The multi-layered structure with viscoelastic tape has high-damping characteristics to effectively secure structural integrity of low-stiffness blades under the launch environment. The design effectiveness was verified through a shock test by dropping a pendulum. The structural integrity of the shock absorber under a launch environment was evaluated through structural analysis under load conditions with a deployable payload.

  • The performance analysis of the small satellites launch vehicle using the electric pump cycle as the upper stage engines was performed. The first stage is the launch vehicle that uses the test launch vehicle of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II and the second stage employs elecpump cycle engine that uses liquid methane and kerosene (RP-1) as fuel. A model for the mass estimation was presented and the analysis was conducted for the range of thrust of 20 to 40 kN and combustion pressure of 3 to 6 MPa with a nozzle expansion ratio of 60 to 100. The mixture ratio with the maximum velocity increment was calculated and the performance of the LEO and SSO payload were calculated from the stage mass estimation. In both the cases, liquid methane, and RP-1 showed maximum payload for 20 kN thrust, 3 MPa combustion pressure, and the nozzle expansion ratio of 100, with a mixture ratio of 3.49 for liquid methane and 2.75 for RP-1. In addition, the ditching points of the first stage and the fairing in the LEO mission were analyzed using ASTOS.

  • The landing gear of an aircraft is a device that absorbs and dissipates shock energy transmitted from the ground to the fuselage. Among the landing gears, the semi-active MR damper landing gear is supposed to show high-shock absorption efficiency under various landing conditions and secure the stability when out of control. In the case of the MR damper landing gear using an annular channel rather than orifice, Amesim, a commercial multi-physics program, is considered as more useful than the conventional two-degree-of-freedom model because the damping force generated by the pressure drop through the flow annular path can cause cavitation in the low-pressure chamber of the MR damper with a specific internal structure. In this paper, the main dynamic characteristics of the MR damper landing gear with an annular type flow path structure has been analyzed under the condition of cavitation. Based on the analysis results using Amesim, a design guideline for the MR damper flow path that prevents cavitation has been proposed based on the modification of the arrangement of internal components of the damper. The guideline was verified through a drop simulation.

  • The importance of understanding the response of structural composites to impact and CAI cannot be overstated to develop analytical models for impact damage and CAI strength predictions. This paper presents experimental findings observed from quasi-static lateral load tests, low velocity impact tests. CAI strength and open hole compressive strength tests using 3 mm thick composite plates($[45/-45/0/90]_{3s}$- IM7/8552). The conclusion is drawn that damage areas for both quasi-static lateral load and impact tests are similar and the curves of several drop weight impacts with varying energy levels(between 5.4 J and 18.7 J) follow the static curve well. In addition, at a given energy the peak force is in good agreement between the static and impact cases. It is identified that the failure behaviour of the specimens from the CAI strength tests was very similar to that observed in laminated plates with open holes under compression loading. The residual strengths art: in good agreement with the measured open hole compressive strengths. considering the impact damage site area, an equivalent hole. The experimental findings suggest that simple analytical models for the prediction of impact damage area and CAI strength can be developed on the basis of the failure mechanism observed from the experimental tests.
