A dense nanostructured TiN-AlN composite was prepared from high-energy ball milled TiN-AlN mixture powders by pulsed current activated sintering (PCAS). A highly dense TiN-AlN bulk composite was obtained within 2 minutes at $1500^{\circ}C$ with the simultaneous application of 80 MPa pressure and pulsed current. The fine crystalline structure of the TiN-AlN mixture, which was obtained by high-energy milling, was effectively maintained during PCAS and resulted in the enhancement of the mechanical properties. The micro hardness and fracture toughness of TiN-AlN composite were $1780kg/mm^2$ and $5MPa.m^{1/2}$, respectively. The mechanical properties were higher than monolithic AlN or TiN.
Nano-powders of $Ti_3Al$ and $2Al_2O_3$ were synthesized from $3TiO_2$ and 5Al powders by high energy ball milling. A nanocrystalline $Al_2O_3$ reinforced composite was consolidated by pulsed current activated sintering within 2 minutes from mechanochemically synthesized powders of $Al_2O_3$ and $Ti_3Al$. Nanocrystalline materials, have received much attention as advanced engineering materials due to their improved physical and mechanical properties. The relative density of the composite was 99.5%. The average obtained hardness and fracture toughness values were 1510 kg/$mm^2$ and $9\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
$TiO_2$ nanotubes fabricated in aqueous HF-based electrolytes have been generally grown only to about 500nm in length because of the strong dissolubility of HF acid. In this paper, ethylene glycol solution has been applied for increasing the length of the anodic $TiO_2$ nanotubes, and the growth behaviors of the nanotubes according to water contents has been investigated. Anodization of Ti in ethylene glycol + 1 wt% $NH_4F$ (EG solution) with water additions up to 10 wt% were carried out at the constant voltage of 20 V. The results show that a thin titanium oxide layer is formed in the initial stage and the nanotube structure grows underneath the initial layer. And the length of $TiO_2$ nanotubes decreases with the increasing water content in the solution. It can be ascribed to the locally acidified circumstance around the barrier layer inside the nanopore due to $H^+$ ion originated from water. The XPS for the nanotubes suggests that the spectra of Ti2p and O1s are the major chemical bonding states of the $TiO_2$, and those for F1s, N1s and C1s come from the compound of $(NH_4)_2TiF_6$.
Nano-powders of 1.5TiAl and $Al_2O_3$ were synthesized from $1.5TiO_2$ and 3Al powders by high energy ball milling. Nanocrystalline $Al_2O_3$ reinforced composite was consolidated by pulsed current activated sintering within 2 minutes from mechanochemically synthesized powders of $Al_2O_3$ and 1.5TiAl. The relative density of the composite was 99.5%. The average hardness and fracture toughness values obtained were $1250kg/mm^2$ and $10MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
Influences of Co and inhibitors from nano-sized WC materials were observed in the sintering process. VC and $Cr_3C_2$ were used as inhibitors. The crystal structure and surface images of sintered nano-sized WC materials, as functions of Co and inhibitors, were evaluated by XRD and FE-SEM analyses. The relative densities of sintered nano-sized WC materials did not change even with increased quantity of Co and increased temperature. The density of sintered nano-sized WC materials with inhibitors was lower than that of sintered nano-sized WC materials without inhibitors. No difference in hardness due to change of inhibitors was found.
The hot embossing process has been mentioned as one of major nanoreplication techniques. This is due to its simple process, low cost, high replication fidelity and relatively high throughput. As the initial step of quantitating the embossing process, simple parametric study about embossing time have been carried out using high-resolution masters which patterned by the DRIE process and laser machining. Under the various embossing time, the viscous flow of thin PMMA films into microcavities during Compression force has been investigated. Also, a study about simulating the viscous flow during embossing process has planned and continuum scale FDM analysis was applied on this simulation. With currently available test data and condition, simple FDM analysis using FLOW3D was made attempt to match simulation and experiment.
Various carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added into the epoxy matrix as reinforcements to investigate the effect on the wear behavior. Effects to the tribological properties of different loading concentrations and types of surface modification are investigated by using a linear reciprocal wear tester. As increasing the concentration of CNTs shows the reduction of the wear loss. Moreover, surface modified CNTs give better tribological property than as produced CNTs. It is due that the functional groups on the surface of CNTs increase the interfacial bonding between CNTs and epoxy matrix through chemical bonding. Changes in worn surface morphology are observed by optical microscope and SEM to investigate the wear behavior. CNTs in the epoxy matrix near the surface are exposed and it becomes the lubricating working film on the worn surface. It reduces the friction and results in the lower surface roughness morphology in the epoxy matrix as increasing the contents of the CNTs.
A phase mixture model was employed to simulate the deformation behaviour of metallic materials covering a wide grain size range from micrometer to nanometer scale. In this model a polycrystalline material is treated as a mixture of two phases: grain interior phase whose plastic deformation is governed by dislocation and diffusion mechanisms and grain boundary 'phase' whose plastic flow is controlled by a boundary diffusion mechanism. The main target of this study was the effect of grain size on stress and its strain rate sensitivity as well as on the strain hardening. Conventional Hall-Petch behaviour in coarse grained materials at high strain rates governed by the dislocation glide mechanism was shown to be replaced with inverse Hall-Petch behaviour in ultrafine grained materials at low strain rates, when both phases deform predominantly by diffusion controlled mechanisms. The model predictions are illustrated by examples from literature.
