  • Recently, a lot of nano-scale material technology development and research have been conducted in construction fields to improve the compressive strength and durability of cement-based Composites. There are some studies that have confirmed the properties and application effects of cement-based complex using each nanomaterial, but development and research using both materials are relatively limited. This study sought to confirm the effect of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and nanosilica, which are representative construction nanomaterials, on the compressive strength, voids, and microstructure formation of cement. The purpose was to produce a cement composite by changing the mixing rate of the two nanomaterials, and to find the optimal mixing amount considering its mechanical and rheological properties.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) draw attention as promising materials due to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, the intrinsic strong interaction between CNTs presents a challenge to their use in various applications. Here, we present a facile method to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a polar solution using a graft copolymer, poly(vinyl chloride)-graft-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate), PVC-g-POEM. The graft copolymer was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), as confirmed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. The SWCNTs were uniformly dispersed in a polar solvent such as dimethylsiloxane (DMSO) using PVC-g-POEM as a dispersant, due to interaction between CNT and the graft copolymer, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Upon removal of the solvent, free standing nanocomposite films with good homogeneity were obtained.

  • Carbon nanotubes have emerged as a promising material for multifaceted applications, such as composited nanofiber, field effect transistors, field emitters, gas sensors due to their extraordinary electrical and physical properties. In particular, synthesis of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes with a high aspect ratio has recently attracted attention for many applications. However, mass production of high-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes is still remain elusive. In this study, an effect of chemical vapor deposition conditions, including catalyst thickness, feedstock flow rate, and growth temperature, on synthesis of carbon nanotube was systematically investigated.

  • We have developed a versatile method for the preparation of chemically linked graphene/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) hybrid materials via simple acid-catalyzed dehydration reaction between graphene oxide (GO) and amine-functionalized MWNTs (af-MWNTs). In this condition, ketone (-C=O) groups in GO and primary amine (-NH2) moieties in af-MWNTs readily react to form imine (-C=N-) linkage. The chemical structures of graphene/MWNTs hybrid materials have been investigated using various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements. As a result of the synergetic effects of hybrid materials such as improved surface area and the superior structural restoration of graphitic networks, the hybrid materials demonstrate improved capacitance with excellent long-term stability. Furthermore, controlled experiments were conducted to optimize the weight ratio of graphene/MWNTs in hybrid materials. The highest capacitance of 132.4 F/g was obtained from the GM7.5 material, in which the weight ratio between graphene and MWNTs was adjusted to 7.5/1, in 1M KOH electrolyte at a scan rate of 100 mV/s.

  • In this paper, we have investigated ultrahigh frequency nano-mechanical resonators, made of DWCNTs with various wall lengths, via classical molecular dynamics simulations. We have aimed our analysis on the frequency variations of these resonators with the DWCNT wall lengths. The results show that the variations can be well fitted by either the Pearson VII function when the resonant frequency of normalized by its maximum frequency is plotted as a function of the inner/outer wall length ratio L5/L10 for different values of the outer wall length L10, and the Gauss distribution function when the resonant frequency of normalized by its maximum frequency is plotted as a function of the outer/inner wall length ratio for different values of the inner wall length.

  • MWNT(multi-walled carbon nanotube)-filled plain-weave glass/epoxy composites were fabricated and electromagnetic characteristics of the composites were investigated. The observation of the microstructures of the composites revealed that MWNTs are mostly distributed in matrix rich region and the interface between glass fiber yarns in warp and fill direction. The permittivity of the composites, measured in X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) frequency range, increased with weight fraction of MWNTs and remained almost constant with frequency. The measured permittivity was used to investigate the reflection loss of radar absorbing structures (RAS) composed of MWNT-filled composites according to thickness and a RAS were constructed with 10 dB absorbing bandwidth 4.2 GHz and 3.3 mm in thickness.

  • Multi-walled carbon nanotube/polystyrene (MWCNT/PS) composites with various MWCNT contents were prepared by using a solution process with an aid of surfactant. Particularly, PS's with 3 different molecular weights (${\bar{M}}_n$ = 101500 g/mole for PS-1, ${\bar{M}}_n$ = 89900 g/mole for PS-2, and ${\bar{M}}_n$ = 85000 g/mole for PS-3) were used in this study. Thermal behavior of these composites was examined by using an oscillator rheometer at $210^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$, of above and below the critical flow temperature ($T_{cf}{\sim}195^{\circ}C$) of PS matrix, respectively. The storage and loss modulus, and the complex viscosity of these composites increased with increasing MWCNT content at both temperatures. Largest increases in the frequency-dependent moduli and complex viscosity were observed between 2 wt% and 5 wt% of MWCNTs at $210^{\circ}C$ and $180^{\circ}C$. Only the composite at $210^{\circ}C$ showed the rheological phase transition from a viscous-dominant to an elastic-dominant behavior of the composites at a certain MWCNT content. The MWCNT content at the rheological phase transition of MWCNT/PS composites generally increased with decreasing molecular weight of PS, and was measured to be 3.5 wt% for MWCNT/PS-1, 3.2 wt% for MWCNT/PS-2, and 3.0 wt% for MWCNT/PS-3 composites.

  • The physicochemical properties of manufactured nanomaterials can vary depending upon the methods of manufacture, although the utilized raw materials are same. Hence, the toxicity can also vary based on the methods of nanomaterials manufacture. In this study, we compared the toxicity effect of two types of CNTs (MWCNT, multi-walled carbon nanotube; SWCNT, single-walled carbon nanotube) that differ in length and wall number. In case of MWCNTs, inflammatory responses were more strongly induced in longer groups, whereas body weights more clearly decreased in shorter groups. SWCNT significantly decreased the relative weights of brain and kidney, and the inflow of immune cells and the hematological changes were observed significantly on day 1 and day 7 after exposure, respectively. Our results showed that the length and wall number of CNTs can serve as critical factors in the exhibited inflammation and toxicity.

  • The relationship between strain and applied potential was derived for composite actuators consisting of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conductive polymers (CPs). During deriving the relationship, an electrochemical ionic approach is utilized to formulate the electromechanical actuation of the composite film actuator. This relationship can give us a direct understanding of the actuation of a nanoactuator. The results show that the well-aligned SWNTs composite actuator can give good actuation responses and high actuating forces available. The actuation is found to be affected by both SWNTs and CPs components and the actuation of SWNTs component has two kinds of influences on that of the CPs component: reinforcement at the positive voltage and abatement at the negative voltage. Optimizations of SWNTs-CPs composite actuator may be achieved by using well-aligned nanotubes as well as choosing suitable electrolyte and input voltage range.
