  • A parametric study was carried out to find the fuel lubrication performance of high speed small rolling element bearings. Both MIL-PRF-7808 turbine oil and JP-8 aircraft fuel were used as the lubricant to compare the operational characteristics. 17 mm inner diameter deep groove ball bearing and 20 mm cylindrical roller bearing were used. A high speed bearing test rig was developed and the testing was done with varying applied load, cooling air temperature, lubricant flow rate, and speed. Fuel caused more cage wear than oil for ball bearing with increasing axial load and rotational speed. The bearing temperature using fuel was lower than that using oil, and this seems to be the result of the high cooling capacity of fuel. According to various tests, the fuel lubrication is applicable for the lubrication on the main shaft bearings of expendable small gas turbines.

  • A design method for maximizing fatigue life of the deep groove ball bearing without enlarging mounting space is proposed by using a genetic algorithm. The use of gradient-based optimization methods for the design of the bearing is restricted because this design problem is characterized by the presence of discrete design variables such as the number of balls and standard ball diameter. Therefore, the design problem of rolling element bearings is a constrained discrete optimization problem. A genetic algorithm using real coding is used to efficiently find the optimum discrete design values. To effectively deal with the design constraints, a ranking method is suggested for constructing a fitness function in the genetic algorithm. Constrains for manufacturing are applied in optimization scheme. Results obtained for several 63 series deep groove ball bearings demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology by showing that the average basic dynamic capacities of optimally designed bearings increased about 9-34% compared with the standard ones.

  • For fault detection about the abrasion stage of rotational machineries under the dynamic loading conditions unlike the traditional diagnosis method used in the past decade, the infrared thermographic method with its distinctive advantages in non-contact, non-destructive, and visible aspects is proposed. In this paper, by applying a rotating deep-grooved ball bearing, passive thermographic experiments were conducted as an alternative way to proceeding the traditional fault monitoring on spectrum analyzer. As results, the thermographic experiment was compared with the traditional vibration spectrum analysis to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. Based on the results obtained as NDT, the temperature characteristics and abnormal fault detections of the ball bearing according to the abrasion stage were analyzed.

  • The cryogenic test facility is developed for test of deep groove ball bearings, floating ring seals, materials (steel & copper) for High Pressure Turbopump of liquid rocket engine (LRE). The cryogenic bearing test is performed to evaluate the flow rate of cooling water and the load-carrying capacity of bearings. The cryogenic seal test is performed to evaluate the determination of magnitude of leakages through the seal, a time variation of this magnitude. The test of the materials Pair is performed to evaluate its fitness for operation in the liquid oxygen medium.

  • Fault detection for dynamic loading conditions of rotational machineries was considered from the contactless, non-destructive infrared thermographic method, rather than the traditional diagnosis method. In this paper, by applying a rotating deep-grooved ball bearing, passive thermographic experiment was performed as an alternative way proceeding the traditional fault monitoring. In addition, the thermographic experiments were compared with the vibration spectrum analysis to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. Based on the results, it was concluded the temperature characteristics of the ball bearing under dynamic loading conditions were analyzed thoroughly.

  • Generally not only the radial load but also the moment may be applied to the ball bearings for a shaft system. However it has been difficult to determine the static equivalent load because there is the radial static equivalent equation only for the axial and radial force on the bearings. In this paper, the same static equivalent radial load which makes the maximum contact force at the interface between the ball and groove as the applied radial force and moment generate is calculated under the condition that the radial force and the moment are applied to the bearings simultaneously. The relation between the static equivalent load and applied force is studied. Therefore the simple and effective equation for the static equivalent radial load of the radial load and moment is proposed for the deep groove ball bearings.

  • This paper suggests a method to design the deep groove ball bearing for high-load capacity by using a genetic algorithm. The design problem of ball bearings is a typical discrete/continuous optimization problem because the deep groove ball bearing has discrete variables, such as ball size and number of balls. Thus, a genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimum values from a set of discrete design variables. The ranking process is proposed to effectively deal with the constraints in genetic algorithm. Results obtained fer several 63 series deep groove ball bearings demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed design methodology by showing that the average basic dynamic capacities of optimally designed bearings increase about 9~34% compared with the standard ones.

  • Automotive transmission systems are assembled with a large number of gears and shafts, and rolling bearings are used to ensure their smooth operation. Gear oil in the gear box contains solid particles such as wear debris from contacting gears and metallic chips. This particle-enriched lubricating oil can cause premature failure of the rolling bearings. Research aimed at improving the service life of these rolling bearings has been confined mainly to design and lubrication of the inner/outer rings and the rolling elements. In this paper, we redesigned the shape of the cage pocket of a deep groove ball bearing to reduce the premature failure due to particle contamination. Test bearings are assembled with this new cage design containing a hole punched in the cage pocket. Endurance tests are carried out using the contaminated lubricating oil with miracle grid as hard particle. The duration and damaged bearing component shapes are compared for two different cages. The B10 life of bearing with new cage is increased by about 66% compared to the conventional cage. This is because the hard particles can be easily discharged through the pocket hole without staying for a long time in the lubrication regions. This greatly decreases abrasive wear and dents on the highly stressed ball bearing surfaces. Therefore, the cage design of this study, containing a pocket hole, can significantly delay the premature failure of rolling bearings and improve the endurance life.
