Design Equation Suggestion through Parametric Study of Laterally Restrained Concrete Decks with Steel Strap (Steel Strap으로 횡보강된 콘크리트 바닥판의 매개변수해석을 통한 설계식 제안)

  • A deterioration of typical reinforced concrete (RC) bridge deck is due to the use of calcium chloride, cracks and water penetration inside of the deck slab with steel reinforcement. In order to eliminate the defects of RC decks in terms of material, therefore, the steel-strapped deck system is studied and developed by maximizing the arching effect while the girders are restrained using straps in lateral direction to the bridge. This parametric study was performed to analyze the structural characteristics of steel-strapped deck, and to identify the factors of the thickness, span length and lateral restraint stiffness of deck slab considering the concrete non-linearity. Finally, a design equation, which is adequate to South Korea, is suggested.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON MISTLETOE EXTRACT-INDUCED APOPTOSIS IN ORAL SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA (구강편평세포암종에서 미슬토 추출물의 Apoptosis 유도 효과에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate mistletoe extract-induced apoptosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma. In vivo study, HN22 cells were xenografted in nude mice. After tumor was experimentally induced, mistletoe extract was directly injected on the tumor mass. The specimens were evaluated using light and transmission electron microscopes. In vitro study, HN22 cells were cultured and exposed to mistletoe extract. The cells were evaluated using transmissin electron microscope. To evaluate apoptotic cells, flow cytometric analysis was done. The results were obtained as follows: 1. Light microscopic view of tumor mass showed necrosis at 2-4 weeks. 2. Transmission electron micrographs of tumor mass showed apoptosis and necrosis. 3. In TEM view of cell lines, necrosis and apoptosis were shown with mistletoe extract at $300{\mu}g/ml$, apoptosis was shown with mistletoe extract at $100{\mu}g/ml$. 4. In flow cytometric analysis, early and late apoptosis was shown when using caspase-3Ab and annexin-V, but no significant change was noted when using mebstain and Apo2.7 Ab. In this study, mistletoe extract induced necrosis and apoptosis in the tumor mass was induced by HN22 cells, early and late apoptosis in vitro study. Mistletoe extract was likely to induce cell death in oral squamous cell carcinoma through apoptosis.

A Study on the Stability of the Single-Layer Latticed Dome during Erection Using the Step-Up Method (Step-Up 공법에 의한 단층래티스돔의 시공시 안정성 연구)

  • The large-space single-layer lattice dome is relatively simpler in terms of the arrangement of the various framework members and of the design of the junction than the multi-layered lattice dome, can reduce the numbers and quantity of the framework members, and has the merit of exposing the beauty of the framework as it stands. The single-layer lattice dome, however, requires a stability investigation of the whole structure itself, along with an analysis of the stress of the framework members, because an unstable phenomenon called "buckling" occurs when its weight reaches critical levels. Many researchers have systematically conducted researches on the stability evaluation of the single-layer lattice dome. No construction case of a single-layer lattice dome with a 300-m-long span, however, has yet been reported anywhere in the world. The large-space dome structure is difficult to erect due to the gigantic span and higher ceiling compared with other common buildings, and its construction cost is generally huge. The method of erecting a structure causes major differences in the construction cost and period. Therefore, many researchers have been conducting various researches on the method of erecting such structure. The step-up method developed by these authors can reduce the construction cost and period to a great extent compared with the other general methods, but the application of this method inevitably requires the development of system supports in the center section as well as pre-existing supports in the boundary sections. In this research, the safety during the construction of a single-layer lattice dome with 300-m-long span using pre-existing materials was examined in the aspect of structural strength, and the basic data required for manufacturing the supports in the application of the step-up method developed by these authors during the erection of the roof structure were obtained.

Changes in Quality Characteristics of Cherry Tomato Packaged with Different Films (포장 조건에 따른 방울토마토의 저장 중 품질 특성 변화)

  • Cherry tomato was packed with several plastic films, and investigated the quality characteristics such as gas composition, weight loss, microbial load, soluble solid content, total acidity during storage at 12$\^{C}$. Cast polypropylene(CPP), low density polyethylene(LDPE), polyolefin(MPD, PD961) and perforated polyolefin(PY85) were used as packaging film. Oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration inside packages generally showed a stabilized levels after 10 days, but those of CPP and PD961 changed throughout the storage. Weight loss of PY85 was 25.6 % after 20 days, while others maintained around 1.0%. Total microbial count showed a increase pattern similar to yeast and mold, and CPP maintained the highest microbial load after 10 days. MPD retarded the decay of cherry tomato to 5.3%, while others showed above 20% after 20 days.

Changes of Carbohydrate Composition and Enzyme Adsorption on the Hydrolysis of Steam Exploded Wood by Cellulase (Cellulase에 의한 폭쇄재의 가수분해에 있어서 탄수화물조성 및 효소흡착량 변화)

  • Two species(Quercus mongolica, populus euramericana) of hardwood chips were subjected to steam explosion 25 kg/$cm^2$, for 6 min. The exploded woods were treated by the single or multi-stage chemical process with sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite and sodium chlorite. The multi-stage treatment of exploded wood can be successfully removed lignin. Enzymatic hydrolysis rate of substrate varied from 25% for exploded wood to about 80% for the multi-chemical treated exploded wood. The enzymatic susceptibility was different among wood species. The multi chemical treatment of the exploded wood resulted in the high rate of glucose in the enzymatic hydrolyzate. Cellulase adsorption increased at high lignin content of substrates, while crystallinity, pore area and specific surface area of substrates did not affected enzyme adsorption. According to the proposed pretreatment and saccharification process in this study, it can be acquired about 37~40 kg of glucose from 100 kg of hardwood.

Automatic Color Recognition System for Stockigt Sizing Test (II) - Application of the automatic recognition principle of red coloration for developing the novel automatic system - (스테키히트 시험용 자동발색인지 시스템 개발을 위한 기초 연구(II) -자동 발색 인지 원리를 적용한 발색 자동인지시스템-)

  • Stockigt sizing test, which is readily affected by individual tester's bias as well as testing conditions in recognizing red coloration, had to be modified to improve its reliability and reproducibility. The novel testing system with the automatic recognizing program of red coloration was developed with the auxiliary equipments including an automatic liquid dispenser and a specimen shifter. The analysis program used a hue value of a droplet image in recognizing a point of time on red coloration instead of RGB values that are not similar to human perception of color. Hue was more sensitive in recognizing the red coloration of a droplet than the other two factors, Saturation and Value. During the test, the program records the time consumed up to a specific hue value of a droplet on a specimen. Differently from the conventional test, the automatic test could obtain a reliable and reproducible sizing degree with a minor error. Furthermore, the Stockigt sizing degree measured by the automatic system showed great correlations with contact angle and Hercules sizing degree. It means that such great correlations will contribute to the development of an integrated measuring system capable of predicting contact angle, surface tension, surface energy and Hercules sizing degree of paper and paperboards through the Stbckigt sizing test. It was meaningful to note that the automatic system for Stbckigt sizing test might be able to used to predict contact angle, Hercules and Cobb sizing degree, based upon the high correlation coefficients.

  • Three unrecorded fern species from the flora of Korea, Nephrolepis cordifolia, Athyrium epirhachis, and Asplenium castaneo-viride, are reported here. Nephrolepis cordifolia, recognized as introduced species and cultivation in Korea until now, is found in the wild at the entrance of small cave in Jeju island. Athyrium epirhachis is found under the Quercus acuta forest at about 400 - 500 m alt. in Jeju island. This species is similar to A. otophorum but different from the latter by having once pinnately divided leaf blade and the decurrent base of ultimate segment. Asplenium castaneo-viride is hybrid between A. ruprechtii and A. incisum and is distinguished from parental species by presence of proliferation, shape of leaf blade, pattern of venation, and leaf texture.

  • Two naturalized allien species are reported from Jeju Island: Papaver setigerium collected from the ground along the road in lowland Veronica serpyllifolia collected from the roadside and ranches on alt. 400-800 m. P. setigerium is similar to P. somniferum, but different from the latter by plant height of 30-70 cm, shorter discoid stigma than fruit in diameter, somewhat sparsely bristly on stems, leaves and calyxes. V. serpyllifolia is similar to V. tenella in morphology, but different from the latter by short plant height, petiolated leaves on lower stem and serrated leaf margins.

  • Two Unrecorded species from Jeju Province are reported: Maesa japonica of Maesaceae which is unrecorded family and Cardamine tanakae of Brassicaceae. Monotypic family Maesaceae, is distinguished from Myrsinaceae and Primulaceae by having pedicels with a pair of bracteoles, flowers without staminodia, semi-inferior ovary and indehiscent fruits with many seeds. M. japonica is readily distinguishable from M. salicifolia in China and M. montana var. formosana in Taiwan and Japan by shapes of blades, corolla and bracteoles, the presence/absence of serrulation of leaf margins, ratio of length of corolla tube and corolla lobes, feature and color of fruit surface. C. tanakae is most similar to Korean endemic C. glechomifolia in morphology, however, the two taxa are readily distinguishable by the number of leaflets of cauline leaves, size of terminal leaflets, number of flowers per inflorescence, the presence of whitish hairs on ovary and fruits.

  • NDT (Non Destructive Test) of the adhesive joints is very important because their strengths have greatly affected by the worker's skill and environmental condition. Recently, the electric impedance method in which 1-2 wt% CNT was dispersed in the adhesive and the electric resistance of the adhesive joint was measured was suggested for the defect detection of the adhesive joint. The uniform dispersion of CNT in the electric impedance method is very important to make a constant electric resistance of the adhesive joint and the accuracy of defect detection depends on the uniform dispersion. In this paper, the adhesive joints in which CNT was dispersed in the adhesive by the four dispersion methods were made and their electric resistance were measured. The pre-process and evaporation process of CNT using the ultrasonic method and agitation method was used and the effective dispersion method was suggested. Also, the criteria to evaluate the dispersivity was proposed.
