  • In this study, in order to discuss the geometric correction methods of high-resolution IKONOS satellite image, the existing polynomial model and RFM which is able to rectify satellite image without auxiliary data are applied to IKONOS satellite image data. Then the accuracy of ground point versus number of GCPs and each order of RFM are assessed. A numerical instability is removed by application of Tikhonov regularization method. As the results of this study, the root mean square errors of RFM is decreased more than 2 pixels in comparison with the two dimensional polynomial model.

  • A solution strategy for geometric non-linear analysis for the plane frame structures subjected to conservative and non-conservative forces is presented. By making efficient combination of the load incremental method and the displacement incremental method, this strategy can find postbuckling configuration such as snap-through and turning-back phenomena which cannot be easily found by the conventional load and displacement incrementation scheme. In the case of the analysis of the framed structure subjected to circulatory non-conservative forces, the total tangent stiffness matrix becomes unsymmetric and when calculating the incremental load and unbalanced load vector components, the direction change of the non-conservative forces is considered. Several example problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the present strategy, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likly to occur in practical framed structures, are given and discussed.

  • In this paper, 3-D frame design using refined plastic-hinge analysis accounting for local buckling is developed. This analysis accounts for material and geometric nonlinearities of the structural system and its component members. Moreover, the problem associated with conventional refined plastic-hinge analyses, which do not consider the degradation of the flexural strength caused by local buckling, is overcome. Efficient ways of assessing steel frame behavior including gradual yielding associated with residual stresses and flexure, second-order effect, and geometric imperfections are presented. In this study, a model consisting of the width-thickness ratio is used to account for local buckling. The proposed analysis is verified by the comparison of the LRFD results. A case study shows that local buckling is a very crucial element to be considered in second-order plastic-hinge analysis. The proposed analysis is shown to be an efficient, reliable tool ready to be implemented into design practice.

  • In this study, we investigated the process of constructing the geometrical solutions to quadratic equation, through proportions between lengths of similar triangles in a dynamic environment. To do this, we provided one task to 4 ninth grades students and observed the process of the students' activities and strategies. As a result of this pilot lesson study, our research shows the advantage and possibility of geometrical method in learning and teaching quadratic equation.

  • Since the kinetic energy is dissipated through plastic deformation energy generated in expanding process of the tube by a die. In order to successfully absorb the kinetic energy there should be no buckling in the expansion tube during expanding process. The buckling instability of the expansion tubes is affected by the initial boundary conditions, tube thickness and length. In this study, the effects of the tube thickness except length and initial boundary condition on the buckling instability are studied using a finite element method. In addition, Analysis procedure for nonlinear post-buckling analysis of expansion tube is established. There are three kinds of finite element analysis procedures for buckling analysis of expansion tube, quasi-static analysis, linear buckling analysis and nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The effect of the geometry imperfections defined as linear superimposition of buckling modes is considered in the nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the buckling load increase with increase of thickness of tube and geometry imperfection. Finial buckling shapes are changed with respect to the geometry imperfection.

  • A numerical procedure based on the finite element method for the analysis of reinforced concrete beam-columns under uniaxial bending is presented. Material nonlinearities such as the cracking and crushing of concrete and the yielding of reinforcing steel as well as the geometric nonlinearity which is an important factor affecting the behavior of beam-columns are considered in the analysis. This method traces the behavior of reinforced concrete beam-columns up to failure by solving incremental equilibrium equations, Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and usefulness of the present method.

  • A geometric non-linear finite element formulation of CRTS reflector subjected to displacement loads, corresponding to the successional assembly steps of the reflector, is presented in order to determine the initial static equilibrium state based on the displacement incremental method. Parametric analyses of the influence of cables and mechanical properties of the reflector on the shape error between reference and equilibrium surfaces have been studied. These results of the present study are compared with the others using Galerkin mothod and NASS 98 program to demonstrate the feasibility.
