Managerial Ownership and R & D Investment in the Chinese Firms : Comparison between State_Owned Firms and Private_Owned Firms (경영자 지분이 연구개발투자에 미치는 영향: 중국 국유기업과 민영기업 비교를 중심으로)

  • Using 1855 observations from 5 years-371 firms panel data during 2010 to 2014 in Chinese stock exchanges, this study examines the impact of managers' ownership on R & D expenditures. The empirical study finds that when firms are state-owned, managers' ownership have negative relation with the level of R & D expenses as well as the likelihood of executing R & D investment, implying that managers are less likely to invest in high risky projects due to managerial ownership's entrenchment effects to pursue private benefits rather than alignment of interest effect as shareholders. The empirical study also finds that when firms are private-owned, managerial ownership are inverse U shaped related to the level of R & D expenses, implying that managers are less likely to invest in high risky projects due to increasing risk aversion resulting from concentration of private wealth at its high level while managers are more likely to invest in high risky projects due to increasing incentives as shareholders at its low level. The results support that the effects of managerial ownership on R & D expenses may be different according to the ownership type of Chinese listed firms.

A Impact of Governmental Fiscal Assistance on R&D Investment of Business Enterprise and University: Focusing on the Asymmetric Relationship (정부의 재정지원이 기업과 대학의 연구개발투자(R&D)에 미치는 영향: 비대칭성을 중심으로)

  • This article estimates the scale of impact of expanding governmental fiscal expenditure for R&D investment on the private business enterprise's investment for R&D, and the relationship between business enterprise and university for expanding investment of R&D. According to my results, first, an expanding fiscal expenditure from government for R&D investment leads to increase R&D investment from business enterprise. However, an expanding expenditure from university rather leads to decrease R&D investment from business enterprise. Secondly, the crowding-out effect of expanding R&D investment from University on business enterprise's is very strong, and it is affected by structural changes such as the country's economic power, fiscal stance and cyclical volatility. Third, the more governmental expenditure on university expansive is, the stronger asymmetric relationship between business enterprise and university is, and investment sources of university from business enterprise is the main factor of this relationship. Finally, it is not easy to solve out this asymmetric relationship even through the governmental subsidy.

  • This study aims to examine the impact of corporate governance systems on the relationship between R&D investment and the performance of Chinese firms. The sample firms were obtained from the statistical yearbook of Chinese high-tech firms. We implement a multiple-regression analysis for an empirical examination. The findings of showed that the separation of the board chair with CEO strengthen the R&D investment-performance relationship of Chinese firms. However, the outsider ratio of the board was found to negatively moderate that relationship. This study provides practical guidelines for Chinese firms undertaking R&D management and corporate governance systems. It also encourages future study on the effects of corporate governance as the means for R&D investment management.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of the financial structure of pharmaceutical companies on R&D investment. 358 pharmaceutical firms listed in the KOSDAQ market from 2000 to 2012. Financial statements and comments in general and internal transactions were extracted from TS-2000 of the Korea Listed Company Association (KLCA), and data related to stock price was extracted from KISVALUE-III of NICE Information Service Co., Ltd. STATA 12.0 was used as the statistical package for panel analysis. The summary of the findings and the interpretation of the significance of this are as follows: First, the shareholding ratio of major shareholders and foreigners had a positive influence on R&D investment. Second, the ratio of outside directors had a negative influence on R&D investment. Third, the shareholding ratio of institutional investors did not have a significant influence on R&D investment.

Impact of R&D expenditures on SMEs' employment: The moderating effect of Government R&D funding (중소기업 R&D활동이 고용창출에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구: 정부R&D지원의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • This article investigates the impact of SMEs' R&D expenditure, government R&D funding, the number of funded by Government R&D programs on the employment growth rate. This study also explores whether government R&D funding and the number of funded by Government R&D programs have interaction effects between SMEs' R&D expenditures and the employment growth rate. The results show that SMEs' R&D expenditure and government R&D funding have a positive effect on the employment growth rate. The rest of variables have no significant direct effects on the employment growth rate. The government R&D funding has a interaction effect between SMEs' R&D expenditures and the employment growth rate. Especially, the firm group of high-level innovation capabilities has a positive effect on the employment growth rate. The results explain that the government R&D funding influences SMEs' employment positively and the impact of the government R&D funding on employment is more effective in the firm group of high-level innovation capabilities. Therefore, Government provides differentiation strategy of R&D funding by innovation capabilities of SMEs and can maximize the employment.

  • In this study, I have tried to analyze an influence of R&D investment on ROV(Real Option Value), corporate value and market value by analyzing R&D investment, ROV, corporate value and market value of machine and material industry in the perspective of ex post. As a result of this study, corporate value, which has been deduced by real option according to R&D investment, reflects market value well and possesses a strong correlation with R&D investment, ROV, corporate value and market value. This implication demonstrates this study result is corresponding with existing theories.

A Study on the Effect of Direct Government R&D Funding on SMEs: A Comparative Analysis between SMEs and Large Companies (정부의 중소기업에 대한 연구개발투자 효과: 대기업과의 비교분석을 통하여)

  • This study is intended to demonstrate how different factors induce the Korean government's direct investment in research and development according to the type of business enterprise in Korea. We analyzed that what factors made the government directly invest in research and development by using a total of 18,272 company panel data, which are not limited to specific industries or government-led research and development (R&D) programs. The results showed that the direct investment for R&D by the government led to the increase in the number of researchers in SMEs. For major companies, the direct investment resulted in the increase of sales and company's own R&D expenses. Moreover, this study found that government's direct support for R&D even led to the decrease of SMEs' own R&D expenses; however, this result was not statistically significant. In addition, the most significant factor to increase both SMEs' and major company's own R&D expenses was the sales amount of the company, rather than government's direct investment for R&D. The factor that increases sales was the company's own R&D expenses, rather than government's direct investment for R&D. Through the analysis using Mixed Effects Model, this study suggested the policy should be changed to make SMEs invest in its own R&D expenses, rather than to secure researchers of SMEs by government's direct investment for R&D.

Analyzing the effectiveness of public R&D subsidies on private R&D expenditure (정부보조금의 민간연구개발투자에 대한 효과분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of public R&D subsidies on private R&D. We have analyzed rationales for the public R&D subsidy from different perspectives. On the basis of literature review, a two step research model is constructed: participation phase (when firms benefit from public subsidies) and decision phase (when firms make decision on additional R&D investments). Using propensity score matching(PSM) method, we compare the potential outcome of the treated group to a matched controlled group of non-subsidized firms. The data used in this paper was collected from various sources. The Korean Innovation Survey 2008(manufacturing sector) is a main source of data. Financial data such as revenue, asset and capital stock, and number of employees were supplemented from the Nice Information Service KIS Value database. The R&D survey, conducted by MEST(Ministry of Education, Science and Technology) each year, was also used for the R&D expenditures of the manufacturing firms. This study comes up with the following empirical results. First, a firm's innovation capability, financial constraints, and sector appear to influence the selection of firms who were benefited from government's financial supports for R&D. Second, empirical results show that public R&D funding complements private investment on average and appear to have perpetual effects on the following year. Finally, sectoral difference in the effect of public subsidies on firms' R&D investment was confirmed. In addition, SMEs show more positive effects than large firms.

The Effect of R&D Investment on Local Economies Using Dynamic Panel Estimator in Korea (동태적 Panel 분석을 통한 R&D투자의 지역효과 분석)

  • This paper analyses the effect of R&D investment on local economies. R&D investment contributes to the regional local economy by increasing employment and production activity of the investees. The investees may end up with increased productivity, sales and employment. At the regional R&D level, the central government R&D fund and firm self R&D budget will be the source of R&D investment. Further positive effects are inter-related with local industries. This study carried out an empirical analysis on the effect of R&D investment on local economies using Korean panel data after comparing international literatures. The dynamic panel estimator is used to estimate an autoregressive model with lagged dependent variable. Using the Da Silva method, mixed variance-component moving-average error process is estimated and selected. R&D investment is very important factor to improve the productivity of a region and the size of the effect is dependent on the time periods within the Korean economic history.

Determinants of Private R&D Investment by Firms' Innovation Strategies - A Case study of Small and Medium Enterprises in Busan - (기업의 혁신전략에 따른 민간 연구개발 투자 영향 연구 - 부산지역 중소기업을 중심으로 -)

  • This research studied the determinants of private R&D investment by examining the innovation strategies of 481 small and medium enterprises (SMEs, their employee size is 5 or more and less than 300) in Busan, South Korea. The data is derived from the Technology Survey of Small and Medium Enterprises in 2001 and 2003. Three explanatory variables for the innovation strategies are the R&D portfolio, the organization (personnel) for R&D, and the strategic role of CEO for innovation. The technological levels of industries are controlled in the linear regression model. The dependent variable is the total private R&D investment of a firm in the given fiscal year. The empirical results indicate that the private R&D investment positively correlates with the complexity of the R&D portfolio, the formal organization for R&D team, and the increase of R&D personnel. The formal organization for R&D team and the number of R&D personnel are correlated with the increase of private R&D investment across the four groups in the manufacturing sector but not in the service sector. These findings suggest that the innovation policy needs to target firms who have complex R&D portfolios, the formal organization of R&D teams, and sufficient R&D personnel in order to increase the private R&D investment of SMEs in regions, with consideration of industrial characteristics.
