The Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility and Audit Size on Credit Rating (기업의 사회적 책임과 감사인 규모가 기업신용등급에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed annual final sample data from 159 companies based on firms selected as economic justice companies by Economic Justice Institute in Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice in South Korea according to interest variables from 2005 until 2011. Analyzed results are as follows. First, higher scores in soundness and corporate social activities among CSR items suggested that corporate credit rating upgraded. This indicates that credit rating institutions give a good evaluation on their social activities and reflect them in credit rating assessment. However, environmental protection satisfaction and corporate credit rating showed the opposite results. Second, high objectivity and contribution to the economic development as well as supervision by giant auditors had substantial effects on higher corporate credit rating. In contrast, high soundness and supervision by giant auditors reduced corporate credit rating. Based on this outcome, it is estimated that there is a discriminatory response among CSR activities in terms of credit rating evaluation conducted by credit rating institution.

  • 1979년 설립된 (주)한창(대표이사 허남걸)은 에어컨, 전열교환기, 차량용 닥터바이러스, PDP TV classis base, 산업용에어컨, 온수기, 프레스 부품, 열교환기 부품 등을 주생산품으로 하고 있는 기업이다. (주)삼성전자에 OEM방식으로 거래하고 있으며, 현재 수원을 필두로 하여 아산공장, 인도공장 등을 가동하고 있다. 전체 직원은 약 500여 명에 달한다. 이곳은 '참', '앎', '온'이라는 사훈 아래 '내실경영', '인재경영', '사회적 책임'의 경영방침을 펼치고 있다. 내부인력에 대한 자기개발 강화, 그리고 안전에 대한 회사의 역할 강화 등으로 사회적 책임을 다함으로써 작지만 강한 기업으로 성장해 나가고자 한다.

  • This study aimed to research the effects of CSR on consumer perception and corporate reputation in chicken restaurant. This study intended (1) to analyze the factors of corporate social responsibility in chicken restaurant, (2) to research the effect of CSR on consumer perception, (3) to research the effect of CSR on corporate reputation, (4) to research the effect of consumer perception on corporate reputation. Data were collected from consumers who visited the top-ranked chicken restaurant in scope by face-to-face interview. The questionnaire was distributed of the 350 copies and used 292 in the analysis. The results of this study revealed that (1) the factors of CSR were economic, philanthropic, legal and ethical, (2) ethical and legal had significant influence on consumer perception, (3) legal, economic and philanthropic activities had significant influence on corporate reputation, (4) the consumer perception had significant influence on corporate reputation.

  • This study investigates the relationship between corporate social responsibility and corporate governance among major US corporations belonging to S&P 500 index during 2000-2008. Specifically, it examines the ways in which firms engage their boards of directors in integrated strategy by establishing a public affairs(PA) or social responsibility(SR) committee at the board level and the effects of this practice on their corporate social performance(CSP). The empirical findings show that negative CSP is the major driver for establishing such a committee, that is, firms suffering from negative CSP as a result of experiencing undesirable social events tend to establish such a committee. On the other hand, such a committee helps the firm increase positive CSP once it is established. In other words, the purpose of establishing such board-level committees is to address problems associated with negative CSP, and once established, they can help enhance positive CSP by enabling the firm to integrate market, non-market, and social responsibility aspects in strategy formulation more effectively. This is evidence that Baron's integrated strategy framework can help firms achieve tangible outcomes.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the current status and implications of companies in relation to the nature of CSR based on the theoretical background of corporate social responsibility (CSR). For consumers using mobile phones from Samsung, LG, and Apple, the impact of CSR components on corporate image, customer satisfaction, and customer citizenship behavior was analyzed. Economic responsibility, ethical responsibility, and philanthropic responsibility all have positive effects on corporate image. However, it was found that legal responsibility did not pay attention to the corporate image. And the corporate image was found to have a positive (+) effect on customer satisfaction and customer citizenship behavior. The results of this study suggest that companies need to devise a systematic CSR education system for their stakeholders.

The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility in Food Incidents (식품안전사고시 기업의 사회적 책임활동이 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the influence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity on corporate image and repurchase intention (pre and post measure) after the news of food incident. A questionnaire survey was carried out for 235 college students in Seoul, Korea. The participants were given an instruction with CSR activity of company in food industry and completed the survey. We collected the survey and did the statistical analysis by SPSS. The result of this study was as follows: Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the two groups, one was aware of corporation's CSR activity and the other was not. The ranges of score of each question on corporate images after and before providing CSR information were 3.21-3.94 and 3.89-4.62, respectively. Also, the ranges of score of each question on repurchase intention after and before providing CSR information were 3.11-4.64 and 3.60-4.67, respectively. Thus, the result confirms that the previous studies' conclusion which explains CSR can shield consumers' negative attitude toward the company. The finding of this study emphasizes the importance of CSR activity to the companies in food industry and the need for making public awareness of CSR activity.

The Effect of Corporate Social Responsibility on Corporate Image: The Role of Spillover Effect and Negativity Effect based on CSR dimensions (기업의 사회적 책임이 기업 이미지에 미치는 영향 - 차원별 파급효과와 메시지 유형을 중심으로 -)

  • Previous researches have proven that corporate social responsibility(adhere CSR) is positively related to corporate performance. But Most of CSR related researches have several limitations. One of limitations is that those researches treated CSR as unidimensional construct. Almost researchers in the area of CSR concepts insisted that CSR is consist of multi dimensions. Carroll's four dimensions of CSR have been utilized by numerous academicians. Carroll asserted that CSR is composed of four dimensions: economic, legal, ethical, and philanthropic responsibility. But Carroll's dimensions were revised as three dimensions by Schwartz and Carroll, because ethical and philanthropic responsibility are not mutually exclusive. If CSR construct is composed of multiple dimensions, a message related to one of dimensions changes beliefs or evaluations about other dimensions that are not mentioned in the message. This phenomenon is called as "spillover effect". According to Ahluwalia, Unnava, and Burnkrant, negative information spills over to attributes that are associated with the target attributes but not mentioned in the message. Like this, this preponderant effect of negative information over positive information has been termed the "negativity effect". In this paper, authors try to prove the spillover effect and negativity effect among Schwartz and Carroll's three dimensions(economic, legal, and ethical responsibility) of CSR. The results of this study show that messages related to legal and ethical responsibility cause spillover effect and influence consumers' evaluation to other dimensions. Moreover, when negativity effect is added on spillover effect, spillover effect is more increased. It means that negative messages related to legal and ethical responsibility is more harmful to corporate image than negative message related to economic responsibility. The results of this study will help companies to manage corporate image using CSR messages as marketing communication tools. Companies should manage messages related to legal and ethical responsibility for more efficiently managing corporate image. Specially, because negative messages related to legal and ethical responsibility are more harmful to corporate image, companies must take care not to spread out negative message related to legal and ethical responsibility. Finally, we discuss the implications of the findings and limitations.

The Effect of Cross National Distance on Foreign Subsidiaries' Corporate Social Responsibility Activities: CAGE Perspective (국가간 거리가 해외자회사의 사회적 책임활동에 미치는 영향: CAGE 관점에서)

  • The purpose of this study is to identity the relationship between CAGE distance and Korean foreign subsidiaries' social responsibility, which is divided into responsive and strategic activities. The hypothesis is that CAGE distance has positive relationships with subsidiaries' social responsibility to overcome local liabilities of foreignness and acquire social legitimacy. The key findings are as follows. Firstly, culture distance has positive significant impacts on subsidiaries' social responsibility activities. It especially has positive influences on strategic CSR. Secondly, administration distance has no impacts on subsidiaries' social responsibility. Thirdly, geographic distance also has positive impacts on subsidiaries' social responsibility activities, especially on responsive CSR. Lastly, economic distance has significantly negative effects on social responsibility. This empirical study identifies the relationships between cross national distance and subsidiaries' social responsibility. Culture and geographic distance has positive influences on subsidiaries' social responsibility. Market seeking subsidiaries group shows more positive relationship between culture distance and social responsibility activities, which means that foreign subsidiaries would engage in social responsibility activities for strategic purpose.

  • Recently, the perception of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has changed. Until now, corporate social responsibility has been recognized as a temporary means to improve the image of a company, but there is a growing recognition that it is a prerequisite for sustainable growth of the entity. Social responsibility of enterprises has altered according to the times and economic environment, and as the global value chain has become important, it has become a growth strategy for small and medium-sized exporters. Under these circumstances, CSR is increasingly an integral part of the activities of companies, and this is no exception for small and medium-sized enterprises. Nevertheless, Korean small businesses' CSR is still lacking, and so the case of Japan, where CSR has spread to small and medium-sized businesses despite the short period of time, is believed to give us policy implications. In the Japanese case, corporate social responsibility has been traditionally passed down by Omi merchants in the 17th century. The social responsibility of a company they thought was summed up by the so-called "sanspo-yoshi spirit" that is beneficial to sellers, benefits to buyers and helps society. Based on the case of Japan's CSR, which has been applied smoothly even to its small and medium-sized companies, this paper intends to suggest the following policy implications. First, the establishment and dissemination of a national long-term plan is necessary. Second, it is urgent for smaller businesses to introduce their strategic CSRs. Third, CSR, which does mutual cooperation between large and small businesses, should be pursued.
