The effect of semantic categorization of episodic memory on encoding of subordinate details: An fMRI study (일화 기억의 의미적 범주화가 세부 기억의 부호화에 미치는 영향에 대한 자기공명영상 분석 연구)

  • Grouping episodes into semantically related categories is necessary for better mnemonic structure. However, the effect of grouping on memory of subordinate details was not clearly understood. In an fMRI study, we tested whether attending superordinate during semantic association disrupts or enhances subordinate episodic details. In each cycle of the experiment, five cue words were presented sequentially with two related detail words placed underneath for each cue. Participants were asked whether they could imagine a category that includes the previously shown cue words in each cycle, and their confidence on retrieval was rated. Participants were asked to perform cued recall tests on presented detail words after the session. Behavioral data showed that reaction times for categorization tasks decreased and confidence levels increased in the third trial of each cycle, thus this trial was considered to be an important insight where a semantic category was believed to be successfully established. Critically, the accuracy of recalling detail words presented immediately prior to third trials was lower than those of followed trials, indicating that subordinate details were disrupted during categorization. General linear model analysis of the trial immediately prior to the completion of categorization, specifically the second trial, revealed significant activation in the temporal gyrus and inferior frontal gyrus, areas of semantic memory networks. Representative Similarity Analysis revealed that the activation patterns of the third trials were more consistent than those of the second trials in the temporal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, and hippocampus. Our research demonstrates that semantic grouping can cause memories of subordinate details to fade, suggesting that semantic retrieval during categorization affects the quality of related episodic memory.

  • Smart material is used in various applications such as for glass frame, for medical instruments and for a part of sensors. Smart composite materials ran be applied to a part of aircraft and to the on-line monitoring system for industrial structures, using the shape memory effect. However, it is very difficult to simulate and analyze the shape memory effect in smart composites. In this paper, a two dimensional axisymmetric model was proposed to analyze the smart composite of one fiber and matrix using the finite element method(FEM). The finite element analysis was carried out in two renditions of the room temperature(293K) and a higher temperature (363K). The results we.e compared with the experimental results to confirm the validity of the analysis. In addition, the acoustic emission(AE) technique was used to study the microscopic damage behavior and the effect of pre-strains on TiNi/A16061 shape memory alloy composite.

The Effects of a Memoir Writing Program for the Elderly Using Cognitive Enhancement Techniques (기억 향상 요소를 강화한 노인 집단 자서전 쓰기 프로그램의 효과)

  • The life review means a process of appraising life of oneself and it is essential for finding the meaning of life in old age. The memoir writing is a kind of method of life review. The memoir writing program used in this study focused especially on enhancing the cognitive skills by providing priming and retrieval support for memory performance in reminiscing past experiences. All fourteen participants were healthy and normal community dwellers and attended four-month long programof memoir writing classes which are consisted of different themes for each week. The aim of this study was to examine if the memoir writing program would render the positive effect on mental health and cognitive ability of the elderly. The results were that quality of life, life satisfaction, ego integrity of the participants showed positive change and the level of depression was significantly reduced compared to that of the control group. The findings in the present study suggest that the memoir writing can serve as one of the community initiative program to the growing population of the elderly for their emotional and cognitive challenges that they face everyday. To warrant the validity of the program, further study is needed for other sectors of elderly population, such as elderly living alone or those with both physical and/or cognitive disadvantages.

Development of the Hippocampal Learning Algorithm Using Associate Memory and Modulator of Neural Weight (연상기억과 뉴런 연결강도 모듈레이터를 이용한 해마 학습 알고리즘 개발)

  • In this paper, we propose the development of MHLA(Modulatory Hippocampus Learning Algorithm) which remodel a principle of brain of hippocampus. Hippocampus takes charge auto-associative memory and controlling functions of long-term or short-term memory strengthening. We organize auto-associative memory based 3 steps system(DG, CA3, CAl) and improve speed of learning by addition of modulator to long-term memory learning. In hippocampal system, according to the 3 steps order, information applies statistical deviation on Dentate Gyrus region and is labelled to responsive pattern by adjustment of a good impression. In CA3 region, pattern is reorganized by auto-associative memory. In CAI region, convergence of connection weight which is used long-term memory is learned fast by neural networks which is applied modulator. To measure performance of MHLA, PCA(Principal Component Analysis) is applied to face images which are classified by pose, expression and picture quality. Next, we calculate feature vectors and learn by MHLA. Finally, we confirm cognitive rate. The results of experiments, we can compare a proposed method of other methods, and we can confirm that the proposed method is superior to the existing method.

Implementation of Serious Games with Language-Based Cognitive Enhancement for BIF Children (경계선지적기능 아동을 위한 언어기반 인지강화 기능성 게임 구현)

  • This study aims to propose instituting the serious games of language-based cognitive enhancement for the BIF children. The program consists of 4 cognitive areas (perception, attention, working memory, knowledge inference) in 4 language dimensions (phoneme, word, sentence, discourse). 16 games of 4 areas/2 dimensions with 3 difficulty levels were implemented in a mobile station and pilot-tested to children including BIFs. The results from the pilot tests supported for the validity and effectiveness of our games: Children's game performance correlated with their IQ scores (overall and sub-areas) revealing significant differences between the groups. The stroop scores in pre-and-post training hinted the increase of children's cognitive control.

  • Reinforcement learning got successful results in a lot of applications such as control and scheduling. Various function approximation methods have been studied in order to improve the learning speed and to solve the shortage of storage in the standard reinforcement learning algorithm of Q-Learning. Most function approximation methods remove some special quality of reinforcement learning and need prior knowledge and preprocessing. Fuzzy Q-Learning needs preprocessing to define fuzzy variables and Local Weighted Regression uses training examples. In this paper, we propose a function approximation method, Fuzzy Q-Map that is based on on-line fuzzy clustering. Fuzzy Q-Map classifies a query state and predicts a suitable action according to the membership degree. We applied the Fuzzy Q-Map, CMAC and LWR to the mountain car problem. Fuzzy Q-Map reached the optimal prediction rate faster than CMAC and the lower prediction rate was seen than LWR that uses training example.

  • 모바일 및 웹 어플리케이션의 통합으로 인해 모바일 사용자들이 접근할 수 있는 서비스의 수는 크게 증가했지만 사용자들은 여러 개의 사용자 이름과 패스워드를 관리해야하는 어려움을 가지고 있다. 이와 유사한 상황은 다양한 종류의 개인장비, 무선 센서, 서버, 서비스 그리고 댁내에서 네트워크화 된 기기들로 구성된 흠 네트워크 환경으로 확장될 수 있다. 최근 디지털 홈 워킹 그룹 (DHWG: Digital Home Working Group)은 보안 강화를 위해 사용자와 기기에 대한 호환성 있는 인증 및 인가 메커니즘을 위한 프레임워크를 준비할 것을 권고하고 있다. 인터넷, 인트라넷 그리고 댁내에 분산된 자원들을 사용하기 위해 각 어플리케이션에 대한 사용자의 인증 및 인가는 반드시 필요하지만 이는 보안 관리와 시스템성능 측면에서는 커다란 부담이 된다. 본 논문에서는 XML기반의 단일인증기술 표준인 SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language)을 이용한 단일인증 아키텍처를 제안한다. 제안된 아키텍처를 기반으로 모바일 및 유비쿼터스 서비스 환경에서 모바일과 홈 기기간에 서로 다른 개체의 인증 및 인가 프로파일 정보의 교환을 가능하게 하므로 분산 환경에서의 보안 관리를 강화할 수 있다. 특히 제안된 아키텍처에서는 고도의 연산능력을 필요로 하는 보안정보의 전자서명 및 암복호 작업을 유선환경에 구성된 고성능의 기기로 전가하고 모바일 기기는 사용자의 인증을 검증할 수 있는 작은 문자열 형태의 artifact를 보유하고 이를 사용자의 인증에 이용함으로써 낮은 컴퓨팅 능력과 기억용량의 한계 같은 모바일 기기의 성능적인 제약을 극복할 수 있게 한다.

Effects of Ginseng and Its Saponins on Experimental Amnesia in Mice and on Cell Cultures of Neurons (인삼 및 인삼 사포닌이 쥐의 건망증 및 신경세포배양에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study was performed to find the effects of ginseng and its saponins. which is written in Chung Yao Ta Tsu Tien as anti-amnesia in its chief indication. on experimental amnesia in mice. In the step through test. ginsenoside $Rb_1\;(GRb_1)\;and\;GRg_1$ facilitated the registration of memory and antagonized the electroconvulsive shock (ECS)-induced inhibition of the retention of memory. Moreover. $GRg_1$ antagonized the EtOH-induced inhibition of the retrieval of memory. In the step down test. $GRb_1\;GRb_2\;and\;GRg_1$ antagonized the ECS-induced inhibition of the retention of memory. Moreover. $GRg_1$ antagonized the EtOH-induced inhibition of the retrieval of memory and facilitated the acquisition of short term memory. In the shuttle hox and lever press tests. they have no effects on acquisition and retrieval of memory. except $GRb_1\;GRb_1$ depressed the retrieval of conditioned avoidance response in the shuttle box test. After the end of four tests. the effects of these orally administered drugs on sedative. analgesic. antipyretic and anticonvulsant actions. and on spontaneous and exploratory movements were tested in doses of less than 500mg/kg. but they had none of these effects. Present study may indicate that $GRg_1$ had effects on the retrieval of memory and on the acquisition process of learning response. The recent research on the role of NGF for the survival. regeneration and regulation of brain in adult animals. indicated the importance of NGF on dementia and amnesia. During our research on the specificity of the neurite out growth induced by NGF. we found that the effect of NGF was potentiated by $GRb_1$ in organ cultures of chick embryonic dorsal root ganglia. Then. the effect of $GRb_1$ on neuronal cell survivalin cell culture system was studied. $GRb_1$ potentiated the NGF-mediated increase of neurofilaments in cell cultures of chick embryonic sensory and sympathetic neurons. NGF with $GRb_1$ also showed a tendency to increase the number of surviving neurons of rat embryonic cerebral cortex. NGF increased choline acetyl transferase activity in cell cultures of rat embryonic septum area neurons. but $GRb_1$ did not potentiate NGF activity in cell cultures of rat embryonic septum area neurons. Present study may indicate that $GRb_1$ plays an important role for the survival or regeneration of neurons in the brain.

Qualitative Analysis of Positive Science Experiences in the Memory of Pre-service Elementary School Teachers (초등 예비교사의 기억 속 긍정적 과학 경험 사례에 대한 질적 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to categorize specific factors and characteristics of positive science experience by qualitatively analyzing the positive science experience cases in the memories of pre-service elementary school teachers. For this purpose, 101 essays written by pre-service teachers on the theme of 'my enjoyable science class experience' were analyzed. The collected data were analyzed using an inductive analysis method, and as a result, the characteristics of positive science experience cases in the memories of pre-service teachers were categorized into 4 categories and 12 topic groups. Specifically, 'experience of exploratory activities using special materials', such as long-term raising and observation of animals and plants, experiments using edible materials, and using special experimental tools had a positive effect on scientific experience. In addition, 'experience of activities emphasizing scientific inquiry' such as emphasizing observation activities, experiments accompanied by clear experimental results, making activities, and using various materials also had a positive effect on science experience. In addition, 'student-centered activity experience' such as strengthening student autonomy, emphasizing collaboration between students, and performing science activities outside of the curriculum also had a positive influence on the science experience. Lastly, 'positive influence of teachers', such as teachers' encouragement and enthusiasm, helped to positively recognize science.

The Effect of Community-Based Cognitive Stimulation Program on Cognitive Fincion and Subject Memory in the Elderly with Mild Cognitive Impairment (지역사회기반 인지자극 프로그램이 경도인지장애 노인의 인지기능과 주관적 기억에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a community-based cognitive stimulation program on cognitive function and subjective memory in the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. This study was applied by selecting 15 users who understood the purpose of this study and agreed to participate in the shelter program for more than 3 months from April 2019 to August 2019 at the D Dementia Center in G located, Gyeonggi-do. The program consisted of a total of 36 cognitive stimulation programs 3 times a week a total of 3 months. Cognitive stimulation program stimulates cognitive function through various activities such as orientation reinforcement, cognitive training, recall, music, art, and physical play, and is used for the purpose of improving social function. It consists of folk songs, percussion instruments, national gymnastics, dance, games, and traditional games. As a result of the cognitive stimulation program, the average cognitive function increased by 2.13 points from 26.33 points before implementation to 28.46 points after implementation, and a statistically significant result was obtained (p=0.000). Subjective memory decreased by 3.53 points from the average of 7.13 points before the cognitive stimulation program was implemented to 3.60 points after the implementation, and a statistically significant result was obtained (p=0.000). It can be confirmed that this works. Dementia is leading to a cost burden, and congnitive function decreases the aqulity of life. It brings various burdens. It is necessary to study cognitive stimulation programs applied to various environments in the future.
