  • This study was conducted to investigate the species of native parasitoids attacking Phyllocnistis citrella and their parasitism in citrus orchards in Jeju, Korea. During the survey period from 2013 to 2014, seven parasitoids belonging to Chalcidoidea were found: majority of the parasitoids were Sympiesis striatipes with 73% and Quadrastichus sp. with 22% in Eulophidae. The others were Neochrysocharis sp., Pnigalio sp., Holcopelte sp., Ageniaspis sp. (Encyrtidae) and Trichomalopsis sp. (Pteromalidae). Average parasitism rate reached 10.7% in orchards with spraying insecticide, and 32.2% in environmental-friendly managed orchards.

  • Henosepilachna vigintioctomaculata (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), important pests of agricultural crops in Korea, including eggplant and potato, were collected in the Kyonggido area each summer from 1983 to 1986. Data were recorded for rates of parasitism against each host stage and seasonal activity. The parasitoids NothoserPhus afissae (Watanabe), (Hymenoptera: Proctotrupidae), Uga menoni (Kerrich), (Hymenoptera: Cha1cididae), and Pediobius foveolatus (Crawford), (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) were reared from the host insects. A solitary larval parasitoid, N. afissae, was reared from 2nd to 4th instar brval hosts, with parasitism being highest in the 3rd instar collection. U. menoni, a solitary larval-pupal parasitoid, was reared from 3rd instar larvae to pupae, and parasitism was highest in the pupal collection. N. afissae and U. menoni occurred during June to September. N. afissae showed relatively high parasitism during the entire study period as compared with other species, while parasitization by U. menoni was highest in July. P. foveolatus, a gregarious larval parasitoid, did not generally appear until September, although it appeared in early August in the southern part of Korea. The number of P. foveolatus emerging from a mummy varied, ranging from 7 to 26 (mean = 13. 8).

  • This paper presents a natural enemy complex of plant and leafhoppers in rice plants and a relationship between the host insects and their natural enemies. Feeding preference of major paddy spiders have been tested. To date, 32 species of natural enemies of plant and leafhoppers have been recorded, including 30 species of parasites and predators (15 parasitoids, 14 predators and nematode) and 2 species of insect pathogens. Some of species have shown great potential for controlling plant-leafhoppers populations; parasites, Anagrus nr. flaveolus, Gonatocerus sp., Haplogonatopus atratus and paddy spiders. Pirata subpiraticus and Gnathonarium dentatum. Plant and leafhoppers-natural enemy relationship have been observed in different developmental stages of the host insects. Pirata sub-piraticus is the most active to searching the host insects and also prefered nymphs to adults.

  • Wood boring insects collected around bait logs of Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis were 45 species from 4 families, which were composed of 21 species of Cerambycidae, 9 species of Curculionidae, 2 species of Rhynchophoridae, and 13 species of Scolytidae. Parasitic or predatory insects were 35 species from 15 families in 6 orders. Among the natural enemies, 2 parasitoids of Dolochomitus nakamurai and Echthus reluctator, and 2 predators of Trogossita japonica and Thanassimus lewisi, were observed frequently attacking a vector insect, Monochamus saltuarius, which has been known to transmit pine wood nematode. Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Adults of D. nakamurai and E. reluctator emerged during early April and early May. Both parasitoids laid eggs on M. saltuarius prepupa and papa, which passed winter inside the pupal chamber. The general predators, T. japonica and T. lewisi, preyed actively during April and October, and attacted almost all of developmental stages of wood borers.

  • In Fukuoka, the natural enemies of Protopulvinaria mangiferae were confirmed as six primary parasitoids, three hyperparasitoids, and six predators. Among the primary parasitoids, Aneristus ceroplastae, Microterys flavus, and Coccophagus yoshidae were relatively abundant in Fukuoka. Aneristus ceroplastae and Coccophagus yoshidae were solitary endoparasitoid, whereas Microterys flavus was a gregarious endoparasitoid. Tetrastichus sp. was a hyperparasitoid and solitarily ectoparasitic to the pupae of Aneristus ceroplastae and Microterys flavus. The seasonal fluctuation of parasitisim and adult emergence of the important parasitoids was investigated in Fukuoka. Among the predatorys, Rhyzobius forestieri and Chilocorus kuwanae were relatively abundant, and seasonal fluctuation of adult emergence and consumption of the host were studied. As the first record from Japan, Rhyzobius forestieri was collected on leaves of Elaeocarpus sylvestris with heavy infestation of Protopulvinaria mangiferae.

  • We surveyed the IRRI farm to determine the extent of parasitization of yellow stemborer egg masses. The egg masses were randomly collected at weekly intervals from July to October 1984 from rice fields, 15-20 days after transplanting, and brought to the laboratory for collection of emerging parasites. Three species of hymenopterous parasitoids-Tetrasticus schoenobii, Telenomus rowani, and Trichogramma japonicum-were found from 700 egg masses. We introduced a method to calculate percent parasitism as based on parasite biology and behaviour. Among the three species, the combination of T. rowani and T. japonicum was the highest multiparasitization of yellow stem borer egg masses, and T. rowani, a solitary parasite had the highest number based on immature and adult stages counted. However, T. schoenobii may be the most efficient parasite because two to four host eggs are needed to complete the larval period, and it took $10{\sim}14$ days for one generation.
