The dynamic behavior of spatial structures is different depending on the aspect ration of arch structure, as the rise-span ratio or open-angle, and these spatial structures show differently the character of seismic response in accordance with stiffness and connection of the lower support structures that are directly influenced by earthquake. Therefore, in this paper, dynamic analysis is conducted for seismic response of single layer arch structures by the influence of column's stiffness and connection, to reflect the different vertical and horizontal vibration mode of single layer arch structures. The vertical response of single layer arch structures is more influence by lower columns and the influence of column's connection rotational stiffness is not large, except to the hinged connections.

The TR-CFT(Transversely Reinforced Concrete Filled Steel Tube) column is proposed to control or at least delay the state of local buckling at the critical section by wrapping the CFT columns with a carbon fiber sheet. In this study, an equation to determine the flexural strength of TR-CFT is proposed. The ACI-318 code, in which the contribution of the confining effect in the concrete filled steel tube is not appropriately accounted for, may be conservative. Therefore, flexural strength design equations for CFT columns and TR-CFT columns are proposed based on the concrete strain-stress curve, which contributes to the confining effect. Finally, the predicted results for the CFT and TR-CFT columns are shown to be in good agreement with actual test results.

In this study, a numerical approach for evaluating the resisting capacity of a partial concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column is introduced. By strengthening the plastic hinge part of a traditional reinforced concrete column with a steel tube, a partial CFST shows a similar bending moment capacity as that of a full CFST column but with reduced material cost. To conduct an elaborate numerical analysis of a partial CFST column, an improved bond-slip model is applied to a finite element (FE) model at the interface between the steel tube and in-filled concrete. This numerical model is verified through the results of a double curvature bending-compression test. A parametric study with the proposed numerical model is used to obtain the load moment interaction diagrams for evaluating the resisting capacity based on various dimensions. Finally, the required strengthening length is estimated for each degree of thickness of the steel tube, and the failure mechanism of the partial CFST column based on the dimensions of the steel tube are identified.
It is necessary to obtain a fire resistance certification in order to use SFRM in Korea. The fire resistance tests for certifications are performed separately for beams and columns and the certifications are different. We could assume that the same SFRM has different thicknesses for beams and columns because the conditions of the fire resistance tests for them differ in the section factors etc. But most of the SFRMs in Korea have the same thicknesses for beams and columns. So the question arises as to there were the differences between the fire test results for beams and columns reside. The purpose of this study is to consider the separate evaluation of the fire resistance of members through a comparative analysis of the temperature data obtained from fire certification tests.

The failure modes of steel column-base plate connection arranged on the basis of AISC Design Guide-#1 and -#10 are base plate tension and compression side flexural yielding, yielding, pull-out and shear failure of anchor rod, concrete crushing in concrete footing and steel column yielding. The bending moment capacity and failure mode in this connection are predicted using limit-state function and we compare these results and test result. In the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thick, bending moment capacity and failure mode in steel column-base plate connection accurately predicted. But in the case that thickness of base plate is relatively thin and axial force do not exist, prediction of failure mode in this connection is somewhat inaccurate.

In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate steel reinforced ECC (Engineered Cementitious Composites) column, which exhibits excellent crack control property and highly ductile behavior. Ordinary portland cement and high volume fly ash were used as binding materials in the mixture proportions for the purpose of achieving a high level of multiple cracking property with the tightly controlled crack width. To compare with the cyclic behavior of steel reinforced ECC column specimen, a conventional reinforced concrete column was prepared and tested under reversed cyclic loading condition. Based on the cyclic load test, ECC column exhibited higher cyclic behavior, compared to the conventional RC column, in terms of load carrying capacity and energy dissipation capacity.

Five strengthened columns and an unstrengthened column were tested under constant axial load and cyclic lateral loads to examine the seismic performance of the unbounded strengthening procedure using wire ropes and T-plates. Main variables considered were the presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel element and anchorage method of T-plate. Test results clearly showed that T-plates having a proper anchorage contribute to transfer of applied moment as well as enhancement of ductility of reinforced concrete columns. However, T-plate not anchored fully into a column base can seldom transfer the externally applied moment, though it highly improves the ductility of column. The presence of mortar cover for strengthening steel elements is significantly effective in enhancing the initial stiffness and flexural capacity of the strengthened columns, but has an adversely effect on enhancing the ductility. The ultimate moment strength predicted from the extended section laminae method in better agreement with test results compared with predictions obtained using stress black specified in ACI 318-05.
The most common structural system for apartment buildings in Korea is adopted to combine structural systems: for example, a moment-resisting frame will be used for lower stories and bearing wall system for the upper stories. This type of buildings have soft and/or weak stories in lower stories, and it may lead to collapse of those buildings during the large earthquake. Reversed cyclic load tests were conducted to estimate the performance and behavioral characteristics of deep beam and exterior column Joints. Experimental parameter is the amount of transverse reinforcement (designed by ACI code and Sheikh's procedure). The results of this study are as follows: (1) The required transverse reinforcement of column designed by Sheikh's procedure requires 2.9 times larger than that designed by ACI procedure. Large amount of transverse reinforcement increase the ductility of the column. (2) Most of the lateral drift in the column is due to the flexural deformation in the joint and plastic hinge region and up-lift rotation. (3) Transverse reinforcement in the exterior column shall be required not only in the hinge region but also in the joint.

Although the flat plate system is an efficient structural type due to the simplicity of its construction, the low story height, and the various plan design, the slab-column connections are vulnerable to punching shear failure from gravity load and eccentric shear failure from lateral load. To prevent the structure collapse, various construction methods of slab-column connection reinforcement are developed but none of these satisfies all of structural performance, economics, and constructability. This paper presents the reinforcement of slab-column connection with lattice bars. The structural performance is confirmed with the interior slab-column connection tests subjected to cyclic loading, and the economic feasibility is demonstrated from the structural design under the same condition with lattice bars, stud rails, and stirrups.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behavior of concrete-filled tube columns for footing connections. Eight specimens were tested to investigate such structural behavior according to the column base type. The specimens consisted of concrete-filled steel tube columns (or bare steel tube columns), reinforced concrete footings, and base plates (or stud connectors). The specimens were subjected to lateral cyclic load. The cyclic load was applied according to a predetermined strength sequence. The results of the experiment indicated that the flexural strength of the stud-connector- type column base is higher than that of the base-plate-type column base. The structural behavior of the concrete-filled tube column base was similar to that of the bare steel column base.
