  • This study investigated the navigation ability of patients with MCI in Virtual Environments(VE) and on the visual functioning. The participants consisted of elderly adults with/without MCI. Neuropsychological tests(RCFT, BVRT, TMT, and Digit Span), the Groton Maze Learning Test(12trials), and the VE navigation learning task(6 trials) were performed. As a result, there were significant group differences for the RCFT and BVRT, but not for the GMLT. For the VE task, there was a significant difference between the MCI and normal group and no interactions between the groups and trials were found. The VE task was correlated with The RCFT, the BVRT, and the GMLT and omnibus the RCFT and the BVRT accounted for 45% of VE performances. Thus, we concluded that patients with MCI are inferior to VE navigation and visual retention/memory play a role in navigation abilities.

  • We compared brain activation areas during participants drawn from contrasting two college majors performed intentionality detection (known as the basic mechanism of theory of mind) task using fMRI. The main purpose of this study was to identify whether individual differences are present in intentionality detection or not. In psychology major, the left inferior frontal gyrus, the fusiform gyrus, the superior temporal gyrus and the right fusiform gyrus, the supramarginal gyrus were activated. In engineering major, the inferior parietal lobule and the superior parietal lobule were found. This result suggests that according to participants' major, different brain areas were activated. The relations between performance of the intentionality detection task and the individual variants of participants were discussed.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of simultaneous dual-task training to assess executive function in older adults. Methods : We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and RISS databases of publicated studies in the past decade. Seven studies were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Qualitative assessment and meta-analysis were performed for the seven studies. Results : A randomized controlled trial design was used in the selected studies, and PEDro Scores above seven were obtained. The Trial Making Test (TMT) evaluated the effects of dual-task training on executive function in four studies. The Color Trail Test (CTT) was used in two studies, and Stroop test was used in three studies. The effect size for total executive function was 0.38, which was small. The effect sizes for TMT and CTT were 0.37. Stroop Test was 0.34, demonstrating that their effect sizes were also small. Only significant effects in total executive function, TMT, and CTT showed significant effects (all p<0.05). Conclusion : This study confirmed that dual-task training was effective in improving executive function in older adults. To improve the effectiveness of dual-task training, the difficulty of the dual-task training should be considered. It is also necessary to implement assessments that can evaluate performance under dual-task conditions as well as conventional test tools for executive function. In the future, dual-task training could be used as an appropriate intervention for executive function in older adults to delay the onset of dementia.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of task-oriented activities on hand functions in patients with hand injuries. From December 2011 to October 2012, sixteen patients with hand injuries at C Hospital in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea were randomly divided into two groups. One group was subjected to task-oriented activity and the other to general exercise. Two groups performed each activity once a day, three times a week, for four weeks. The group with the task-oriented activities was provided with the tasks according to subject-preference based on the result of Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). To verify the effect of intervention, the following hand function measures were used: grip strength, pinch strength, and the range of opposition and abduction, Purdue pegboard test and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH). Both groups showed significant increase in all of the hand function measures after 4-week activities(p<.05). The task-oriented activity group was significantly different from the control group in powers for tip pinch, lateral pinch and three-jaw chuck pinch, Purdue pegboard test and DASH(p<.05) except in grip strength and the range of opposition and abduction suggesting better improvement in hand functions. This study shows that task-oriented activities improve the hand functions more effectively in patients with hand injuries.

  • This study attempted a new approach to the methods of identifying the scientifically giftedness in relation to the recent emphasis on the education for the scientifically gifted. This study focused on the processes of the cognition achievements, while only the results have been studied until now. Theoretical backgrounds about the ways of identifying the gifted, the research procedures about brain functions, and the information procedures about brain data were reviewed. Eleven scientifically gifted and 10 normal children from the 4th to the 6th grades were selected to analyze the characteristics of their brain waves with brain wave measuring instrument for PCs. The results showed that the scientifically gifted, while studying scientific and creative problems, used their right brain more than their left. When solving these problems, they utilized more of their theta and alpha brain waves than those normal children. In addition, theta brain waves of the scientifically gifted were rather active during these activities and this phenomenon was more distinctive in their right brain rather than their left. Thereby, this study implies that the characteristics of brain waves during the moments of solving certain problems can be used as a method to identify the scientifically gifted.

  • This study examined the effectiveness of a short thumb splint and a glove type splint which combined features of a fitness glove in order to improve hand function and performance of functional task after traumatic brain injury. One subject with traumatic brain injury participated in this study and wore a short thumb splint and customized glove type splint. His hand function was significantly improved when comparing to that of not using those splints. In addition, using the glove type splint was more significant to perform functional tasks than using the short thumb splint. The findings of this study identified that hand function of people with traumatic brain injury was improved by using those splints as an occupational therapy service and it is necessary to adapt the customized splints according to the personal characteristics.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to conduct a preliminary research for the development of a Performance-Based Cognitive Function Test (PCFT) to screen the elderly for cognitive function impairment, and examine the reliability and validity of the test. Methods: A draft version of the Performance-Based Cognitive Function Test (PCFT) was developed and utilized in nine healthy elderly individuals. In order to verify its reliability, we analyzed the internal consistency of the PCFT. In order to verify the concurrent validity of the PCFT, this study analyzed the correlation between motor-cognitive dual task assessments and the Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE-K). Results: The internal consistency of the PCFT for motor and cognitive tasks was 0.871 and 0.959 (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$), respectively. Concurrent validity of the PCFT, which was performed through motor-cognitive dual task assessments, ranged from 0.755 to 0.964 (Spearman's rho statistic, p < 0.05). In addition, correlation between the cognitive assessment tool and the MMSE-K ranged from 0.849 to 0.943 (p < 0.01). Conclusion: This study verified, and established the reliability and validity of the PCFT. Further studies are required to examine other psychometric properties in a modified PCFT, for screening cognitive function impairments in the elderly.

  • Objective : This study aimed to establish an analytic methodology that can objectively evaluate the proverb comprehension levels that vary based on the aging process. Method : This study recruited 70 normal elderly aged ≥ 65 years and performed proverb comprehension tasks using an explanation method. A scoring estimation method was designed on 3 and 5-point scales. The difficulty and discrimination levels were calculated based on the two scales, thereby selecting the final questions and evaluation scale. Results : First, the item discrimination index on the 5-point scale was relatively higher than that on the 3-point scale, and 10 items were finally selected. Second, in terms of proverb comprehension ability, the elderly group aged 70 ~ 84 years showed significantly lower performance than those aged 65 ~ 69 years. Additionally, subjects with ≥ 10 years of education showed significantly higher performance than those with 9 ≤ years of education. Third, the performance of the proverbs comprehension task negatively correlated with the reaction time of the executive function task. Conclusion : Proverb comprehension is a task that can distinctively show a deterioration of brain functions in line with the aging process even among the normal elderly group and therefore, can estimate the difference more effectively with an increase in the score of the evaluation scale.

  • In implicit learning tasks, human participants learn grammatical letter strings better than random letter strings. After learning grammatical letter strings, participants were able to judge the grammaticality of new letter strings that they have never seen before. EPAM (Elementary Perceiver and Memorizer) IV, a rote learner without any rule abstraction mechanism, was used to simulate these results. The results showed that EPAM IV with a within-item chunking function was able to learn grammatical letter strings better than random letter strings and discriminate grammatical letter strings from non-grammatical letter strings. The success of EPAM IV in simulating human performance strongly indicated that recognition memory based on chunking plays a critical role in implicit learning.
