  • Biodegradable polymeric stents have been issued to replace the existing non-degradable metal stents due to relatively improved biocompatibility and low side effects. Fundamentally, all the stents must possess the desired mechanism strength, especially, compression or radial force to maintain the diameters of expanded vessels. Therefore, this study suggests a helical structure and focused on the relation between the lateral compression and structural factors, Unlike a cylindrical model, the radial force of the helical model is proportional to the thickness and the length to the power of one, whereas the diameter to the power of 1.6. The function obtained from these results might provide the fundamental information to design and prepare the stem for clinical applications.

  • Structural integrity of solid rocket depends on the residual reactions between constituents of its composition(post cure, migration etc.), the oxygen(or anti-oxydent) in the free volume and humidity (desiccant) under the perfect sealed condition. Mechanical Properties of composite solid propellant arising from those factors are very complex. Moreover the propulsion are faced with thermal loads from diurnal & seasonal cycle till firing. In this study, the fast evaluation method of long term mechanical properties is suggested based on Thermo-Rheological Simplicity from curing oven to cool-down stage in view point of thermal stabilization. For this subject, endurance tester having temperature control capability are devised. From the results from incremental load and strain, non-linear characteristics are discussed.

  • In this study, the anisotropic mechanical property of fused deposition modeling three-dimensional (3D) printing based on lamination direction was verified by a tensile test. Moreover, the property was applied to solid isotropic materials with penalization-based topology optimization. The case of the lower control arm, one of the automotive suspension components, was considered as a benchmark problem. The optimal topological results varied depending on the external load and anisotropic property. Based on these results, two test specimens were fabricated by varying the lamination direction of 3D printing; a tensile test utilizing 3D non-contact strain gauge was also conducted. The measured strain was compared with that obtained by computer-aided engineering response analysis. Quantitatively, the measurement and analysis results are found to have good agreement. The effectiveness of topology optimization considering the lamination direction of 3D printing was confirmed by the experimental result.

  • In this paper, we propose the design method for the composite torque link of a landing gear for a helicopter. The composite torque link has to be light weighted and very stiff to keep the shock absorber in the landing gear of helicopter. The configuration and structural shape has to be designed in consideration of the RTM (Resin Transfer Molding) manufacturing process which is adopted to minimize the manufacturing cost. The mechanical properties are obtained through the coupon tests with the specimens made by the same manufacturing process for the composite structure. The optimal design process was performed through iterative modifications of the models which were verified by stress analysis using FEM. The composite torque link has lug-shaped parts and is very thick, so 3D Layered solid elements of ABAQUS were used to get the stress field including the stress components in thickness direction and non-linear static analysis using contact B.C. of rigid-deform condition was used to get the optimal design.

  • The effect of exposure times on the aging characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composite ring specimen was evaluated using an accelerating aging tester. Combined exposure conditions, such as temperature, moisture, and ultraviolet, were applied up to 3000 hours. Tensile properties and flexural properties including the effect of curvature were evaluated on the specimens subject to various exposure times through a material testing system. Their aging surfaces were observed through a scanning electron microscope. According to the results, tensile modulus was little affected by the exposure times. However, tensile strength, at the early stage of the exposure times, increased due to physical aging and curing reaction, but tensile strength slightly decreased due to degradation as the exposure times increased. The flexural modulus and flexural strength increased at the early stage of the exposure times, but slightly decreased as the exposure times increased. Aging surfaces of the specimens examined using the scanning electron microscope revealed a different morphology in various exposure times and provided useful information for identifying the degradation in mechanical properties of the composite subject to various exposure times.

  • This paper describes the results of experiments and numerical simulation studies on the low-velocity impact damage of two different sandwich composite panels for application to bodyshell and floor structure of the BIMODAL tram vehicle. Square test samples of 100mm sides were subjected to low-velocity impact loading using an instrumented testing machine at four impact energy levels. Part of this work presented is focused on the finite element analysis of low-velocity impact response onto a sandwich composite panels. It is based on the application of explicit finite element (FE) analysis codes LS-DYNA 3D to study the impact response of sandwich structures under low-velocity impact conditions. Material testing was conducted to determine the input parameters for the metallic and composite material model, and the effective equivalent damage model for the orthotropic honeycomb materials. Numerical and experimental results showed a good agreement for damage area and the depth of indentation of sandwich composite panels created by the impact loading.

  • Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) is a relatively new material in the bridge construction. With high strength to weight ratios, excellent durability, and low life-cycle costs of FRP, FRP bridge decks can offer a low dead load, reduced maintenance, and long service life. Due to the lightweight of FRP, if existing concrete decks can be replaced with the FRP decks, the load carrying capacity of superstructure can be increased without strengthening of girders. In this study, we have conducted an experiment on 7 cases of connection conditions with steel girder by using bolts considering a rational and economical method of connection and compared with the results of FEM analysis. From the experimental result, if the bolts are strong enough to resist shear force between the FRP bridge deck and the steel girder, it will be structurally secure to use the zigzag method.

  • In composites manufacturing, increasing resin impregnation is a key way to speed up the manufacturing process and improve product quality. While resin improvement is important, simple fiber surface treatments can also improve resin flowability. In this study, different plasma treatment times were applied to carbon fiber fabrics to improve the impregnation between resin and fiber. Electrical resistivity measurements were used to evaluate the dispersion of resin in the fibers, which changed with plasma treatment. The effect of fiber surface treatment on resin spreadability could be observed in real time. When inserting a carbon fiber tow into the resin, the amount of resin that soaked into the tow was measured to objectively compare resin impregnation. Five minutes of plasma treatment improved the tensile and compressive strength of the composite by more than 50%, while reducing the void content and increasing the fire point impregnation flow rate. Finally, a dynamic flexural fatigue test was conducted using a portion of the composite used as an architectural composite part, and the composite part did not fail after one million cycles of a 3 kN load.

  • In this study, a molecular dynamics simulation study was performed to investigate the size-dependent electroelastic properties of single-walled boron nitride nanotubes(BNNT). To describe the elasticity and polarization of BNNT under mechanical loading, the Tersoff potential model and rigid ion approximation were adopted. For the prediction of piezoelectric constants and Young's modulus of BNNTs, piezoelectric constitutive equations based on the Maxwell's equation were used to calculate the strain-electric displacement and strain-stress relationships. It was found that the piezoelectric constants of BNNTs gradually decreases as the radius of the tubes increases showing a nonnegligible size effect. On the other hand, the elastic constants of the BNNTs showed opposites trends according to the equivalent geometrical assumption of the tubular structures. To establish the structure-property relationships, localized configurational change of the primarily bonded B-N bonded topology was investigated in detail to elucidate the BNNT curvature dependent elasticity.

  • Statement of problem: A casting connection technique is widely used for repair, correction and addition to base metal framework. However, a casting connection technique may increase the risk of failure in clinical situations when high stresses exist. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical retentive groove design comparatively to increase the joint strength by using the three-dimensional finite element analysis model of a 3-unit fixed partial denture. Material and methods: Ten finite element models were constructed. (Model A: One retentive groove, Model B: Two retentive grooves, Model C: Three retentive grooves, Model D: Four retentive grooves, Model E: One horizontal groove and two vertical grooves, Model F: Two horizontal grooves and one vertical groove, Model G: One groove with the enlarged dimension, Model H: Two grooves with the enlarged dimension, Model I: One groove with the increased height, Model J: One groove with the increased width of base). The vertical force was applied to the mesial and the distal fossa to the casting connection of mandibular first molar. Results: The main factors, affecting joint strength of casting connection were both the retention between the primary cast and the secondary cast and the thickness of the primary cast remaining after preparing retentive groove. The increase of retentive force, according to the numbers and the dimension of retentive groove had an effect on distributing stress. However, in some cases, the increase of retentive force resulted in the increase of stress by reducing thickness of the primary cast in the connection area. Conclusion: The design of retentive groove that limits number of retentive groove for metal thickness and increases the depth of retentive groove for retention is highly recommended.
