  • This paper discusses two different techniques used to measure the mechanical properties of thin films: the bulge test and the nanoindentation test. In the bulge test, a uniform pressure is applied to one side of the film. Measurement of the membrane deflection as a function of the applied pressure allows one to determine the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, and the residual stress. A nanoindentation test is performed by pushing an indenter tip into the specimen and then withdrawing it, and then recording the indentation force as a function of the indenter position. A modified King's model is used to estimate the mechanical properties of the thin film in order to avoid the effects of the substrate layers. A combination of both the bulge test and the nanoindentation test can determine both Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio simultaneously.

  • High-strength nickel-based super alloys have been widely used in aircraft engines, vessel engines, and turbine blades because of their high strength and excellent fatigue and oxidation resistance. In this study, tests were carried out to determine the total strain range and temperature for high-strength nickel-based super alloys. Prepared specimens of IN738LC were exposed to temperatures of $871^{\circ}C$ and $982^{\circ}C$ for 1,000.10,000 h. These specimens were subjected to tests of mechanical properties and microstructure observations. The changes in mechanical properties were related to changes in ${\gamma}$ according to the thermal exposure time.

  • Inherited the excellent electrical and mechanical properties based on the low dimensional structure of graphene, three-dimensional graphene nanostructures have gathered great attention as electrochemical energy storage electrodes owing to their high porosity and large specific surface area. Also, having the catecholamine structure, dopamine has been regarded as a multifunctional material to possess high affinity to various organic/inorganic materials and to modify a hydrophobic surface to a hydrophilic one. In this work, through coating dopamine on the three-dimensional graphene nanostructure, we tried to increase the specific capacitance by enhancing the wettability with electrolyte and to improve the mechanical compressive property by strengthening the nano-architecture. As a result, the dopamine-coated nanostructure exhibited significant improvement on the specific capacitance (51.5% increase) and compressive stress (59.6% increase).

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been regarded as a promising material for the fabrication of flexible conductors such as transparent electrodes, flexible heaters, and transparent speakers. In this study, a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) film was deposited on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate using a spraying technique. MWCNTs were dispersed in water using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). To evaluate the effect of the weight ratio between SDS and MWCNTs on the electromechanical properties of the film, direct tensile tests and optical strain measurement were conducted. It was found that the CNT film hardly affected the mechanical behavior of CNT/PET composite films, while the electrical behavior of the CNT film was strongly affected by the SDS concentration in the CNT film. The electrical resistance of CNT/PET films gradually increased with the strain applied to the PET substrate, even up to a large strain that ruptured the substrate.

  • In this work, the effects of electrochemical oxidation of carbon fiber surfaces on mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers-reinforced polarized-polypropylene matrix composites were studied with various current densities during the treatments. Surface properties of the fibers before and after treatments were observed by SEM, AFM, XPS, and contact angle measurements. Mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were measured in terms of critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). From the results it was found that $O_{1s}$ peaks of the fiber surfaces were strengthened after electrochemical oxidation which led to the enhancement of surface free energy of the fiber, resulting in good mechanical performance of the composites. It can be concluded that electrochemical oxidation of the carbon fiber surfaces can control the interfacial adhesion between the carbon fibers and polarized-polypropylene in this composites system.

  • This study was undertaken for the purpose of investigating the texture of mungbean starch gel. By the sensory evaluation result of 8% mungbean starch gel, ‘shine’ tended to increase as the addition level of oil increased, but clarity tended to be decreased. In elasticity, hardness, cohesiveness and overall quality, 2% oil gel was more preferable then those of other levels. The result of 10% mungbean starch gel was similar to that of 8% mungbean starch gel. In 8% and 10% mungbean starch gel, ‘shine’ characteristic in sensory evaluation showed the positive correlation with L, a, and b values in mechanical test. However clarity in sensory evaluation showed the negative correlation with L, a, and b values in mechanical test.

  • In this work, calcium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate as metal ionic crosslinking agents were used to introduce ionic crosslinking points to the ethylene vinylacetate (EVA) emulsions for the enhancement of water resistance and mechanical properties of emulsion films. The properties of EVA emulsion film were investigated in crosslinking density, thermal features, surface energy, and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength. With the increasing content of metal ionic crosslinking agent, the crosslinking density of the EVA emulsion film increases, resulting into the improvement of water resistance. The surface energy and mechanical properties of the EVA emulsion film, however, showed somewhat different behaviors. The highest surface energy, tensile strength, and tear strength were observed when 0.4% for calcium hydroxide and 0.5% for magnesium carbonate was added respectively, because the EVA emulsion containing carboxylic acid forms strong carboxylate-metal bond of ionically-crosslinked system. Therefore, it can be concluded that metal ionic crosslinking agents, such as magnesium carbonate and calcium hydroxide are considered to improve water resistance and mechanical properties of the EVA emulsion.

  • Performance demonstration with real flawed specimens has been strongly required for nondestructive evaluation of safety class components in nuclear power plant. Mechanical or thermal fatigue crack and intergranular stress corrosion cracking could be occured in the in-service nuclear power plant and mechanical fatigue crack was selected to study in this paper. Specimen was designed to produce mechanical fatigue flaw under tensile stress. The number of cycles and the level of stress were controlled to obtain the desired flaw roughness. After the accurate physical measurement of the flaw size and location, fracture surface was seal-welded in place to ensure the designed location and site. The remaining weld groove was then filled by using gas-tungsten are welding(GTAW) and flux-cored arc welding(FCAW). Results of radio graphic and ultrasonic testing showed that fatigue cracks were consistent with the designed size and location in the final specimens.

  • Nitrogen incorporated diamond-like carbon films were deposited by r.f. glow discharge of mixtures of benzene and ammonia gases. Mechanical properties, composition and atomic bond structure were investigated when the fraction of ammonia increases from 0 to 0.79 and the negative self bias voltage of cathode from 100 to 900 V. Both the residual compressive stress and the hardness decrease from 1.7 to 1.0 GPa and from 2750Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ to 1700Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$, respectively. In addition to hydrogen, triply bonded nitrogens also play a role of teminal sites of the three dimensional atomic bond network. By considering the hydrogen concentration and the nitrogen bond characteristics, it can be shown that the mechanical properties of the films are determined by the content of three dimensional inter-links of $sp^2$ clusters. Although the mechanical properties are affected by the nitrogen addition, its depedence on the negative bias voltage is qualitatively identical to that of pure diamond-like carbon films.

  • The internal residual stresses within the multilayered structure with sharp interface induced by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the materials of adjacent layers often provide the source of failure such as delamination of interfaces etc. Recent development of the multilayered structure with functionally graded interface would be the solution to prevent this kind of failure. However a systematic thermo-mechanical analysis is needed for the customized structural design of multilayered structure. In this study, theoretical model for the thermo-mechanical analysis is developed for multilayered structures of the $Al-SiC_p$ functionally graded composite for electronic packaging. The evolution of curvature and internal stresses in response to temperature variations is presented for the different combinations of geometry. The resultant analytical solutions are used for the optimal design of the multilayered structures with functionally graded interface as well as with sharp interface.
