Analysis of Variations in Deformations of Additively Manufactured SUS316L Specimen with respect to Process Parameters and Powder Reuse (금속 적층제조 방식을 이용한 SUS316L 시편의 공정 파라미터 및 금속 분말 재사용에 따른 변형량 변화 분석)

  • Residual stress that can occur during the metal additive manufacturing process is an important factor that must be properly controlled for the precise production of metal parts through 3D printing. Therefore, in this study, the factors affecting these residual stresses were investigated using an experimental method. For the experiment, a specimen was manufactured through an additive manufacturing process, and the amount of deformation was measured by cutting it. By appropriately calibrating the measured data using methods such as curve fitting, it was possible to quantitatively analyze the effect of process parameters and metal powder reuse on deformation due to residual stress. From this result, it was confirmed that the factor that has the greatest influence on the magnitude of deformation due to residual stress in the metal additive manufacturing process is whether the metal powder is reused. In addition, it was confirmed that process parameters such as laser pattern and laser scan angle can also affect the deformation.

  • 금속 3D 프린팅의 응용분야는 자동차, 우주항공, 의료/헬스, 전자기기, 금형 등으로 분류할 수 있다. 최근 들어 선진국을 중심으로 아크 용접기반 금속 3D 프린팅 기술의 연구개발이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 3D 프린팅 기술은 CAD 설계 정보를 이용한 적층 제조방식이기 때문에 내부 형상이 아무리 복잡하여도 제작이 가능하고, 디자인이 변경되더라도 별도의 금형 제작 없이 제작이 가능하다는 장점이 있다. 와이어 아크기반 금속 3D 프린팅 기술은 차세대 생산제조 핵심기술로 발전할 전망이다. 금속 3D 프린터의 기술경쟁력 제고를 위해서 적층패턴, 와이어정밀 송급 및 적층품질 실시간 모니터링 등의 시스템 제어 기술과 대형 금속부품의 고생산성을 위한 적층가공 시스템 기술개발이 진행될 것으로 예상된다. 금속 와이어 아크를 이용한 대형 3D 프린팅 시스템의 지식재산권 확보 전략을 수립하기 위해 대형 3D 프린터 기술, 금속 와이어 3D 프린터 기술, 아크 3D 프린터 기술의 세 가지 분야에 대한 특허동향 분석을 수행하였다.

The Effect of Fabrication Process Parameters on the Microstructures of Intermetallic/Metal Laminated Composite by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis (자전고온반응에 의한 금속간화합물/금속 적층복합재료의 제조공정변수가 미세조직에 미치는 영향)

  • In this paper, intermetallic/metal laminated composites have been successfully produced that utilizes SHS reactions between Ni and Al elemental metal foils. The reaction between Ni and Al started from the nucleation and growth of NiA1$_3$ and was followed by the diffusional growth of Ni$_2$A1$_3$ between Ni and NiA1$_3$. The SHS reaction was thermodynamically analyzed through the final volume fraction of the non-reacted Al related with the initial thickness ratio of Ni:Al and prior heat treatment. Thermally aging these 1aminates resulted in formation of a functionally gradient series of intermetallic phases. Microstructure showed that the intermetallic volume percent was 82, 59.5, 40% in the 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 thickness ratio specimen. Main phases of the intermetallic were NiAl and Ni$_3$Al having higher strength at room and high temperatures.

  • Metal matrix composites (MMCs) were widely used in various industries, due to the excellent properties: high strength, stiffness, wear resistance, hardness, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, etc. With additive manufacturing (AM) technology rapidly developed, AM MMCs have been actively investigated thanks to the cost- and time-saving manufacturing. However, several issues still need to be addressed before fabricating AM MMCs. Here, several types of MMCs were introduced and MMCs' design methods to tackle the issues were suggested in a powder bed fusion (PBF) technique. The paper could come up with a guideline for the material and process design of MMCs in the PBF technique.

  • This paper delves into the crucial realm of support structures in metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes and their direct impact on the stiffness of printed components. With the continuous evolution of AM technologies, optimizing support structures has become imperative to enhance the overall quality and performance of manufactured metal parts. Therefore, in this study, tensile specimens were manufactured using various representative support design variables such as support type, spacing, and penetration depth, and the differences in displacement-load curve were analyzed though tensile test. Using additively manufactured support shaped tensile specimen, the paper presents a comprehensive examination of the effect of support parameters on their stiffness. The findings contribute to advancing the understanding how to design supports to suppress thermal deformation of metal parts during AM process, thereby paving the way for enhanced design freedom and functional performance in the ever-expanding field of AM.

  • Recently, metal additive manufacturing (AM) is being investigated as a new manufacturing technology. In metal AM, powder bed fusion (PBF) is a promising technology that can be used to manufacture small and complex metallic components by selectively fusing each powder layer using an energy source such as laser or an electron beam. PBF includes selective laser melting (SLM) and electron beam melting (EBM). SLM uses high power-density laser to melt and fuse metal powders. EBM is similar to SLM but melts metals using an electron beam. When these processes are applied, the mechanical properties and microstructures change due to the many parameters involved. Therefore, this study is conducted to investigate the effects of the parameters on the mechanical properties and microstructures such that the processes can be performed more economically and efficiently.

Complex heat-treatment effects on as-built CoCrMo alloy (적층공정법으로 제작된 CoCrMo 합금의 복합열처리 효과)

  • The CoCrMo as-built alloys prepared by 3D-printing process are studied on tensile strength, wear resistance, crystal structure and microstructure after complex heat-treatment including HIP. In this study, HIP treatment for removing micropores, ambient heat-treatment for formation of metal carbides, and solution heat-treatment for homogenization of the created metal carbides were tried and characterized for applying to artificial joint. The complex heat-treatment effects of the CoCrMo as-built alloys prepared by 3D-printing process were owing to the densification during HIP, formation of metal carbides and homogenization of the created metal carbides. The effects of the complex heat-treatment were confirmed by XRD, FE-SEM and EDS.

A Study of the Formation of Binary Intermediate Layer on Pd-based Hydrogen Separation Membrane Using Various Types of Metal Oxides (다양한 형태의 금속 산화물을 이용한 Pd계 복합 수소분리막의 2원계 중간층 형성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the intermediate layer in Pd-based hydrogen separation membrane was synthesized to minimize the surface roughness and defects using powder-type and sol-type metal oxides. The surface properties and gas permeation characteristics were analysed by SEM and $N_2$ gas permeation test. The coating layer composed of sol type metal oxides has smooth surface, especially the layer coated by $TiO_2$ sol has little pin holes, cracks and defects. The binary layer composed of powder type and sol type metal oxides has similar flux characteristics to a single sol type layer. The Pd-based composite membrane improved by the binary intermediate layer exhibited $0.32mol/m^2s$ of the hydrogen permeation flux with a selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of ~10,890 at 672 K and a pressure difference of 1 bar.
