  • For image data the discrete cosine transform (DCT) has comparable energy compaction capability to Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) which is optimal. Hence DCT has been widely accepted in various image and video compression standard such as JPEG, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. Recently some approximate DCT's have been reported, which can be computed much faster than the original DCT because their coefficients are either zero or the power of 2. Although the level of energy compaction is slightly degraded, the approximate DCT's can be utilized in real time implementation of image or visual compression applications. In this paper, an approximate 8-point DCT which contains 17 non-zero power-of-2 coefficients and high energy compaction capability comparable to DCT is proposed. Transform coding experiments with several images show that the proposed transform outperforms the published works.

  • In two-dimensional discrete cosine transform(DCT) coding, the measurements of the distributions of the transform coefficients are important because a better approximation yields a smaller mean square distorition. This paper presents the results of distribution tests which indicate that the statistics of the AC coefficients are well approximated to a generalized Gaussian distribution whose shape parameter is 0.6. Furthermore, from a simulation of the DCT coding, it was shown that the above approximation yields a higher experimental SNR and a better agreement between theory and simulation than the Gaussian or Laplacian assumptions.

  • A rate-distortion based segmentation using recursive merging is presented, which considers texture as a homogeneity by adopting the procedure of a generalized texture approximation. The texture in a region is approximated by SA-DCT and a set of two uniform quantizers with fixed step sizes, one for DC and another for AC. Using the approximated texture, we calculated the rate-distortion based cost. The segmentation using recursive merging is performed by using the rate-distortion based cost. Experimental results for 256$\times$256 Lena show that the region-based coding using the proposed segmentation yields the PSNR improvements of 0.8~ 1.0 dB and 1.2~1.5 dB over that using the rate-distortion based segmentation with DC approximation only and JPEG, respectively.

  • Discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient dropping is well recognized as an efficient rate adaptation transcoding in motion-compensated (MC)-DCT based MPEG-compressed videos. However, in this scheme, the errors incurred by the DCT coefficient-dropping are propagated and often result in significant visual quality degradation. This paper presents two propositions describing well the statistical properties of propagated errors. That is, we propose that the DCT error of the current frame is not correlated to the propagated errors of the previous frames. We also propose that the overall distortions in a given frame can be approximated as the sum of the DCT error of the current frame and the propagated errors from the previous frames. Then, it is shown that several computer simulations with different video sequences verify the effectiveness of the proposed statistical analyses.

  • In many image compression applications, the discrete cosine transform (DCY) is well known for is highly efficient coding performance. However, it produces undesirable block artifacts in low-bit rate coding. In addition, in many practical applications, faster computation and easier VLST implementation of DCT coefficients are also important issues. The removal of the block artifacts and faster DCT computation are therefor of practical interest. In this paper, a modified DCTcomputation scheme was investigated, which provides a simple efficient solution to the reduction of the block artifacts while achieving faster computation. We have applied the new ap-proach to the low-bit rate coding and decoding of images. Simulation results on real images have verified the improved performance of the proposed method over the standar d method.

  • A simple postprocessing algorithm is proposed to reduce the blocky artifacts of Block Discrete Cosine Transform (BDCT) coded images. Since the block noise is mostly antisymmetric relative to the block boundaries, we model the blocky noise as one-dimensional antisymmertric functions made by superposing DCT basis functions. observing the frequency characteristics of the noies model, we approximate its high frequency components as those of step functions. Then the proposed postprocessing algorithm eliminates the carefully selected high frequency components of step functions in the one-dimensional sN-point DCT domain, when the encoding block size is $N\;{\times}\;N$. It is shown that the proposed algorithm can also be performed in the spatial domain without computational burden of transforms. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm well reduces the blocky artifacts in both subjective and objectie viewpoints.

  • In the typical data partitioning for error-resilient video coding, motion and macroblock header information is separated from the texture information. It can be an effective tool for the transmission of video over the error prone environment. For Intra-coded frames, however, the loss of DCT (discrete cosine transform) coefficients is fatal because there is no ther information to reconstruct the corrupted macroblocks by errors. For Inter-coded frames, when error occurs in DCT coefficients, the picture quality is degraded because all DCT coefficients are discarded in those packets. In this paper, we propose an efficient data partitioning and coding method for DCT-based error-resilient video. The quantized DCT coefficients are partitioned into the even-value approximation and the remainder parts. It is shown that the proposed algorithm provides a better quality of the high priority part than the conventional methods.

  • The H.264/AVC video coding standard uses rate distortion optimization (RDO) method to improve the compression performance in the intra prediction. The complexity and computational load are increased more than previous standard by using this method, even though this standard selects the best coding mode for the current macroblock. This paper proposes a fast intra mode decision algorithm for H.264/AVC encoder based on dominant edge direction (DED). To apply the idea, this algorithm uses the approximation of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficient. By detecting the DED, 3 modes instead of 9 modes are chosen for RDO calculation to decide the best mode in the $4{\times}4$ luma block. As for the $16{\times}16$ luma and $8{\times}8$ chroma block, instead of 4 modes, only 2 modes are searched. Experimental results show that the computation time of the proposed algorithm is decreased to about 72% of the full search method with negligible quality loss.
