Mediation analysis of dietary habits, nutrient intakes, daily life in the relationship between working hours of Korean shift workers and metabolic syndrome : the sixth (2013 ~ 2015) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (교대근무자의 근무시간과 대사증후군의 관계에서 식습관, 영양섭취상태, 일상생활의 매개효과 분석 : 6기 국민건강영양조사 (2013 ~ 2015) 데이터 이용)

  • Purpose: This study examined the mediation effects of dietary habits, nutrient intake, daily life in the relationship between the working hours of Korean shift workers and metabolic syndrome. Methods: Data were collected from the sixth (2013-2015) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The stochastic regression imputation was used to fill missing data. Statistical analysis was performed in Korean shift workers with metabolic syndrome using the SPSS 24 program for Windows and a structural equation model (SEM) using an analysis of moment structure (AMOS) 21.0 package. Results: The model fitted the data well in terms of the goodness of fit index (GFI) = 0.939, root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.025, normed fit index (NFI) = 0.917, Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.984, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.987, and adjusted goodness of fit index (AGFI) = 0.915. Specific mediation effect of dietary habits (p = 0.023) was statistically significant in the impact of the working hours of shift workers on nutrient intake, and specific mediation effect of daily life (p = 0.019) was statistically significant in the impact of the working hours of shift workers on metabolic syndrome. On the other hand, the dietary habits, nutrient intake and daily life had no significant multiple mediator effects on the working hours of shift workers with metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The appropriate model suggests that working hours have direct effect on the daily life, which has the mediation effect on the risk of metabolic syndrome in shift workers.

A phenomenological convergence study on the mealtime experience of shift nurses on duty. (교대근무 간호사의 식사경험에 관한 현상학적 융합연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain a comprehensive understanding of shift nurses' mealtime experience on duty. This study was explored by hermeneutic phenomenological analytic method suggested by van Manen. The participants were shift nurses at two general hospitals in Korea. Six participants were interviewed until information reached saturation point. Data was collected through individual in-depth interviews. The results of study were emerged 7 themes. Each theme was :'Forgetting hunger.', 'Fatigue takes precedence over hunger.', 'Feeling sorry and becoming conscious of other colleagues.', 'Inhale the meal in a short time.', 'Conflicting between responsibility for the patient body and my body', 'They want look for freedom and right through their mealtime.', 'Hope that mealtime is a precious time.' The results of this study are significant in providing a convergence understanding of the working environment of the shift nurses.

The study on outpatient-clinic practice by shift system at a hospital in Taegu (대구지역 한 중소병원의 교대제 근무에 의한 외래진료에 관한 연구)

  • Medical consumers(patients) want evening-clinic because of busy work. For patient's convenience and improving service, hospital should accept it. Considering payment system and patient's demand, personnel expenses, hospital can not accept. The practice of shift system to accept patient's demand and hospital's economic aspect was made. To analysis the effect of the system and probability to alternative to evening clinic this study was done. This study was composed of basal study, intervention, evaluation of effect. The basal study were composed of studying demand on evening clinic, the number of beds, doctors employee, the time table of practice and work, and the number of patients at arrival time. The intervention composed of changing of practice time, changing of working time by the number of patients at arrival time, increasing of employee. The evaluation of effect were composed of evaluating the number of patient at time, the effect of shift system, the comparison of the number of in and out patients and questionnairing the practice of shift system. In the practice time at 2 shift system First team works 7-15 hours and Second team 12-20 hours. there are no lunch and supper time. At 18-20 hours the number of patients were 25-30. The number of patient a depart were 6-7. The number of out-patient increase in 13% and inpatient increase in 10% before the system. Doctors(100%), employee(94.6%), and patients(86.4%) approved this system. The advantage of this system were utilization of surplus time, lengthen the practice time, even distribution of patients and shortening of waiting time, rapid treatment of emergent patients. The disadvantage of this system were shortage of manpower, not all depart practice, continuity of practice, no lunch and supper time, irregular rounding. At present because of small Demanding on evening clinic, this shift system was economical. To succeed this study more effectively all depart in hospital participate. But because of economical reason it is impossible for hospital to do it. If the government assist the economic loss that all depart participate in this system it is very helpful for hospital to succeed in implementing this system more early.

A Study on Changes in the Biorhythm in Guard Duties and CCTV Monitoring Works for Work Duration (근무지속시간에 따른 경계근무와 CCTV모니터링근무의 생체리듬변화 차이 연구)

  • In this study changes in biorhythm are observed by measuring heart rate variabilities in order to verify, compare, and evaluate stresses in guard duties of guards and CCTV monitoring works of staffs serviced in practical guard sites. Guard duties and CCTV monitoring works similar to a practical situation are implemented for nine students in the department of security at K University over 150 minutes. In the results of observing heart rate variabilities and autonomic function tests for six times with an interval of 30 minutes, the heart rate variability (HRV) in CCTV monitoring works represents lower levels than that of guard duties. Also, in a stable condition the guard duties for 30 and 60 minutes exhibit lower levels than that of 90, 120, and 150 minutes. Regarding SDNN, CCTV monitoring works show higher levels that guard duties and the guard duties for 30 and 60 minutes represent lower levels than that of 150 minutes. In autonomic function tests, there are no differences in TP between groups according to guard duties and CCTV monitoring works. Also, the guard duties for 150 minutes represent more differences in TP compared to that of 30 minutes. The interaction between the duty type and the duty duration is presented. In the case of LF, guard duties for 150 minutes show large differences in duty duration compared to that of 60 minutes. In the case of HF, the CCTV monitoring work group shows higher levels than the guard duty group in which the guard duties for 120 and 150 minutes represent higher levels than that of 30 minutes. The interaction between the duty type and the duty duration is presented. In the case of the LF/HF ratio, the guard duty group exhibits higher levels than the CCTV monitoring group. Also, there is an interaction between the duty type and the duty duration including the difference in durations. The CCTV monitoring works represent lower heart function activities than the guard duties according to increases in parasympathetic nervous activities. It shows that the long-term CCTV monitoring duty repeated everyday shows a high possibility of increasing the exposures of VDT syndrome and nervous breakdown.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the effective method to improve the competitive power in the Busan container terminal. To achieve this, we analyzed the present of the shift pattern in the container terminal, and identified the problems in the pattern. This study shows the issues of shift pattern for field employee in Busan container terminal and also improvement plan to solve them. We suggested two approaches as an effective approach; the flexible use of employees through overtime, use of workers pool among terminals, and outsourcing; the promotion of welfare by leisure, fitness, and community service.

  • 산업계를 중심으로 많은 직장에서 교대제 근무가 실시되고 있으나, 교대작업에 관한 작업시간의 단축이 요구되고 있는 실정이다. 교대제근무의 도입에 따라 직장내에서 취하는 수면과 이러한 수면후 아침 일찍 작업을 계속하는 경우도 일반화 되고 있다. 일반적으로, 수면시간은 적어도 7시간 정도 취하는 것이 이상적 이라고 일본 후생성 등에서 권장하고 있지만, 직장에 따라서는 심야 근무의 종료시간등의 문제때문에, 반드시 이러한 수면의 장려시간이 지켜지는 경우는 많지 않다. 따라서, 수면량의 부족 및 그에 따른 수면의 질적 저하가 다음날 작업시에 작업자의 심신반응에 좋지않은 영향을 미치게 될것이라는 것은 쉽게 예상할 수가 있다. 이러한 점을 배경으로, 본 연구는 신경감각작업의 대표적인 예의 하나인 열차운전에 종사하는 운전사을 대상으로 새벽에 하는 작업에 대해 전날밤에 취한 수면의 양.부가 작업시에 작업자의 자각적 피로감에 양향을 미친는 가를 사례적으로 연구하여 분석한 것이다.

Associations between working conditions and Occupational injury of Korean Employees (한국 임금근로자의 근무환경과 업무상 손상과의 관계)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relation between working conditions and occupational injuries among Korean employees. This study was based on the 4th Korean Working Conditions Survey(KWCS) and a total of 36,292 data were analyzed. Multivariate logistic regression was used to investigate the relation of working conditions and occupational injuries after controlling for individual variables. After control of personal factors, perception of the threat to health or safety(OR=3.77, 95% CI=2.934-4.844), 49-59 working hours(OR=1.63, 95% CI=1.023-2.601), 60 hours or more per week(OR=2.66, 95% CI=1.683-4.197), and manual occupation type(OR=1.76, 95% CI=1.218-2.536) were associated with occupational injuries. Our results indicate that working conditions influence occupational injuries, and the focus should be on prevention and management strategies for occupational injuries to vulnerable workers.

The Relationship Between Flexible Work Arrangements and Work-Life Balance - With a Focus on Working From Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic (유연근무제와 근로자의 일·생활균형 - 코로나19 이후 재택근로 확산의 영향을 중심으로)

  • This study examines the relationship between flexible work and workers' work-life balance using data from the 23rd Korean Labor and Income Panel Study, with a focus on the impact of working from home (WFH) during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the analysis, WFH was found to have a positive effect on the happiness of workers, satisfaction with family relationships, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job satisfaction related to job security for women. In addition, we looked at the changes in time use of WFH workers and non-WFH workers before and after COVID-19, with a particular focus on aspects such as time spent sleeping and on self-development, childcare, housework, exercise, and social gatherings. Compared to non-WFH workers, WFH workers increased the time spent on housework and childcare after COVID-19, with this trend more pronounced among women. The results of this study suggest that the effect of utilizing WFH may be halved for workers who have to take care of children and work at the same time, and that this effect may be greater for women. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen social support measures so that WFH workers who face a work-life conflict due to childcare can maintain work productivity and realize a work-life balance, and to ensure that the flexible work arrangement should not be a medium that reinforces traditional gender roles. Active policy efforts will be required to make sure this happens.
