A Study on the 3D Stereoscopic Disparity in Four Animation Movies (3D 입체 애니메이션의 장면별 입체시차 연구)

  • This study was aimed to analyze the disparities of 3D stereoscopic images in four well-known American animation movies. After Avatar (2009), lots of stereoscopic movies were developed in Korean 3D production. Almost all 3D productions in Korea, however, focus on the display images or TV series animation yet. In order to make many well-made Korean stereoscopic 3D animations in future, analyzing and comparing the disparities of 3D stereoscopic images is necessary and even mandated. First, I chose 40 cuts from each four American stereoscopic 3D feature films, including Despicable me 2, Epic, Monster University, and Turbo. According to the classifications of shot angles by Vineyard (2008), secondly I analyze the 23 different angular disparities of 3D stereoscopic images and displayed in tables. Demonstrated shot angle disparities in each scene would provide numerical information to animators how to design and make the 3D stereoscopic images. Making successful stereoscopic 3D feature film will be a huge turning point in the Korean animation field in future. This study would be a first trial to seek a new method to set ahead an outlook of numerical values of 3D stereoscopic images for better visual effects.

  • This study tries to analyze the portfolio of production budget related to Hollywood animation movies released during the five years between 2010 and 2014, in order to investigate how blockbuster strategy made the box office performance. The analysis shows that this animation genre invested more than one thousand million dollars as the average budget for each film. It increased threefold in the box office result. In the production of Hollywood animation genre, 72.2% of its whole production money was found to use for movies investing more than one thousand million dollars. It is to show how the production of animation aimed for profit-making via blockbuster strategy recognized as the most successful portfolio strategy in the recent Hollywood film industry.

  • 정부가‘일본문화 4차 개방계획’에 따라 올 1월로 검토해온 극장용 애니메이션 분야의 전면개방을 2006년으로 2년간 유예했다. 이에 따라 애니메이션 업계는 일단‘급한 불은 껐다’는 안도의 한숨을 내쉬지만 여전히 국산 애니메이션의 자생력을 기르기 위한 제도적 지원방안이 결여돼 있다는데 실망감을 내비치고 있다. 더욱이 극장용 애니메이션 개방이 보류됐다고 해도‘케이블TV · 위성 방송 중심으로 방송 프로그램 개방폭 확대’를 골자로 한 일본문화 4차 개방계획이 발표됨에 따라 각 방송사들은 각종 해외작품을 자사 방송사에 편성하려는데 전력을 기울이고 있어 국내 애니메이션은 설자리를 잃어가고 있는 실정이다. 이번 조치가 과연 국내 애니메이션 업계를 활성화시킬 수 있는 기회로 작용할지 최근 국내 애니메이션 업계의 현주소를 진단해본다.

  • 중국 영상콘텐츠시장은 영화산업의 급성장과 더불어 애니메이션 산업 역시 성장세를 보이고 있다. 2015년에 상영한 <몽키킹: 영웅의 귀환>은 956억 위안화의 흥행 신화를 창조했고, 네티즌 관객들의 열렬한 사랑과 언론의 주목을 이끌어냈다. 그런데 2016년 1월에 상영한 극장용 애니메이션 <리틀 도어 갓즈>의 경우, 흥행수익이 7천만위안에 머무르고 있다. 이는 중국 애니메이션 영화 제작 기술이 많은 성장을 이루었지만, 미국의 경우와 비교하면 여전히 부족한 점들이 존재함을 보여준다. 본문에서는 중국 극장용 애니메이션 <리틀 도어 갓즈>의 조명 연출에 초점을 맞추어, 중국 극장용 애니메이션의 조명 특징을 연구하고 발전 방향을 모색하려한다.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the direction of the development of the feature length animation for movie theater by analyzing of the reasons of the success of . released in 2011 has broken box office records by drawing 2 millions since drew 760 thousands in 1976. This can be one of the success model of the animation for movie theater, considering it has had trouble not only in planning ability and scenario power but also in producing environment where subcontracts are prevalent. This box office hit seems to have been possible through cooperation and division of movie crews and animation crews. Many kinds of materials are reviewed and producer Kim Seonku was interviewed for analysis of the reasons of box office success. Followings are five reasons of success found as the result of analysis and the body of this article is composed of the argument and analysis of each. 1.This animation was planned and produced in the same way of commercial feature films. 2.There was detailed division of work while producing 3. Various kinds of investments were made sequentially, 4. Major film distributor like Lotte and CJ could be motivated 5. There were producers who can mediate between the animation and film field This study suggests the direction both in the aspect of industry and the aspect of training professionals as the result of analysis. In the industrial aspect, transitional cooperation is needed between animation filed and film field which can motivate distributor. Industrial approach like planning, investment, distribution and marketing is absolute for the success of animation for movie theater. Also in the aspect of training professionals, curriculum needs to be improved in the university because the ability and passion of the professionals in the field of animation industry are the most important and education is the most approachable way.

  • As number of making 3D feature animation films is increasing, 3D production pipeline become more complicated and more artists are needed than before. Major studios in foreign countries, in burden of producing high quality films with limited amount of budget and time, have been handling such difficulties by hiring technical directors in each department such as animation, rigging, cloth hair, and effect. Technical director is new occupation which appears after trend of producing animation is changed from 2D to 3D. Importance of technical director is increasing in respect to studios' needs which are related to complication in production time, manpower, budget, and production pipeline. This research is based on the researcher's work experience as an animation TD at Walt Diseny Animation Studio and Sony Pictures Imageworks, interview with working professionals, and related books and thesis. It focuses on the role of animation technical director in Disney's 3D feature animation film from two perspectives, 'Designing Production Pipeline' and 'Analyzing Problem of Shot'. Animation technical directors design and test production pipeline so that they can detect and solve problems that may arise in production process as early as possible. They not only analyze numerous problems of characters or shots limited to animation department but also in other departments such as modeling, mapping, character rigging, cloth, hair, lighting, rendering, software development in order to support artists to complete their shots according to the production schedule. In accordance with recent trend of increasing number of 3D feature animation film production in South Korea and collaboration with foreign studios outside of South Korea, it is vital to train animation technical directors who can develop production pipeline, analyze various problems of shots and characters to escalate efficiency in production.

  • 'Spectacles' and 'factuality' provided by computer technology are strengths of CG animation to still lure the audience and after commercial success of a number of theatrical CG animations whose typical producing companies are PIXAR and DreamWorks, were produced to be commercially successful and they win massive popularity even now. In Korea as well, several works tried to achieve a box office success including , , etc. but the result was truly miserable. In the past, this failure was often attributed to a lack of 'technical expertise', but it became clear that in the process of continuous trial and error, 'narrative' and 'images of imagination' which are bases and characteristics of animation are key elements of commercial success. Actually, statistics indicate that narrative is what is considered to be the most important by the audience when they select animation and its importance is so absolute that they say the most significant thing in animation is 'story.' In particular, it can be said that 'characters', 'situations', and 'ideas' play a key role in them which become elements of the story. This paper studied with what characteristics each animation aroused pleasure and fun focused on characters, situations and images in relation to , , and which are American theatrical CG animation films which succeeded in gaining popularity home and abroad. We hope that analysis in this paper will be helpful even just a little bit as a reference material, which allows domestic writers and producers to develop familiar and characteristic works based on imagination and creativity expressing each work's unique personality and characteristics.
