Neural Bases of Empathy in Competitive vs. non-Competitive situation (경쟁과 비경쟁 상황에서 공감의 신경학적 기제)

  • This fMRI study is aim to investigate effects of competitive environment in cognitive empathic process in human brain. Empathy is known as a crucial factor for human's adaptive behavior in aspects of social cognition and it is almost automatic process, on the other hand competitive situation is psychologically devastated environment to win someone for getting rewards. We hypnotized that reading and understanding of other person's mind are a specific characteristic related to survival evolutionarily, however competition would have an effect on the empathic cognitive process because of mechanisms of competition. To manipulate the competitive atmosphere, one researcher took a role of competitor against participants and they were instructed to get monetary rewards when their performance was better than a competitor. 21 participants(9 males and 12 females) performed to judge the emotional valence of the empathic task consisted of illustrated images with various situation could be experienced in real world as on $1^{st}$ person perspective in both competitive and non-competitive condition, and did same performance with objects stimulus in control condition. In order to examine the competition effects on empathic process,, hemodynamic response were obtained during fMRI session and the imaging data were analyzed to identify brain regions where responses to each condition across the two consecutive runs. Participants' reaction time in competitive condition was faster statistically significant than non-competitive one. Activation for competitive condition increased in the following areas: ACC, mPFC, SMG, thalamus extended caudate and Nacc, parahippocampal gyrus, and for non-competitive condition increased paracingulate gyrus, temporal pole, vmPFC, superior occipital gyrus. As a result of regression analysis using empathic scores as covariance, the rSMG, IFG, fusiform gyrus, thalamus, putamen were correlated with higher empathic levels, and TPJ were correlated with lower empathic scores. We suggest that these observations could mean competitive environment have an effect on neural base of cognitive empathic process.

A Simple and Fast Algorithm for Real-time Pencil Strokes (간단하고 빠른 실시간 연필 스트로크 알고리즘)

  • In this paper, we present a new algorithm which imitate real pencil strokes. The purpose of research on NPR(Non-Photorealistic Rendering) is simulating automatically manmade artistic expressions such as pen-and-ink illustrations, watercolor paintings, pencil sketches and pastel drawings with computers. Recently, there has been a great deal of research works on NPR. One of them is researching in pencil illustration methods for NPR, and a lot of researchers have investigated into the LIC(Linear Integral Convolution) techniques which would change the initial images into the output images by directional vector field images for generating effects of pencil. However, the LIC techniques can not be applied to real-time drawing tools because they are post processing techniques. This paper presents a real-time pencil strokes algorithm which is based on an observation of how pencils(from 6B to 6H) draw lines. Although this algorithm using some pencil variables and noise generation is simple, it is fast and also can draw real-time pencil strokes similar to real manmade pencil strokes in a GUI drawing tool.

  • Manual processing to make illusion-image of Digital Animation consists of handicraft technology indeed, such as an animation process, image addition and image revision etc.. This thesis asserts that is acquiring new art concept, resuscitating the craftsmanship of art in this digital manufacturing process. To concrete this, this paper consists of the following steps. First, reproduction and mixture in a Film. In art history which have emphasized 'Aura' of an, Reproduction by machine became that can not avoid. Various pictorial information and added images stored by digital become having an opportunity that can do easily a new film-work with reproduction and mixture It is the second rank, extension of an area of Digital Animation. Now, Digital Animation is recognized as a new creative art through illusion of meta-realism. Consequently, the process of Digital Animation is acquiringing the possibility as a new art of Digital Animation, showing the characteristics of a new media art that reconstructs imagination which past media arts could not achieve.

  • The Face Stimulus Assessment is an efficient projective drawing test developed by Betts. This paper categorizes scales which Betts suggested into the following five groups: accuracy of painting, color fit, perception of shape, precision of drawing, and space usage. In this paper, a computer algorithm which objectively evaluates these five scales is suggested. The proposed algorithm defines the areas of the lip, eyes, hair, etc. which take on significant roles in the evaluation of the FSA and based on these factors, it calculates the grade of each scale through the main color and color ratio. The consistency of evaluations between the computer algorithm and the art therapist is measured by the Quadratic Weighted Kappa. By providing objectivity and consistency, the computer algorithm is expected to solve the problem of uncertainty found in art therapists' evaluations of projective drawing tests caused by their subjective judgment, experience, and intuition.

  • are cartoon-expressions called cartoon itself to show the characteristic and limit of the presentation system, cartoon, by constitution. These followings are typical examples. First, a character regarded as a cartoonist shows up in the cartoon and constitutes the readers' recognition of the cartoon by himself or herself. Second, the line dividing two cuts is transformed or destroyed and likened to another thing so that can help the readers understand the cuts are physical existence. Most of the approaches to cartoon criticism studies which have been done before are external analyses focused on how to use cuts, balloons, and the two-dimensional expression meaning the relationship between script and picture. The purpose of this research is understanding meta-expressions in online and offline cartoons based on these outcomes. The research on meta-expressions of cartoon is considered to help understanding about the structure of Webcomics and the expansion of expression field in media by examining the expressions of the genre called cartoon.

  • A new algorithm in order to classify various contents in the image documents, such as text, figure, graph, table, etc. is proposed in this paper by classifying contents using texture-based PCA, and by segmenting document images using local entropy-based histogram. Local entropy and histogram made the binarization of image document not only robust to various transformation and noise, but also easy and less time-consuming. And texture-based PCA algorithm for each segmented region was taken notice of each content in the image documents having different texture information. Through this, it was not necessary to establish any pre-defined structural information, and advantages were found from the fact of fast and efficient classification. The result demonstrated that the proposed method had shown better performances of segmentation and classification for various images, and is also found superior to previous methods by its efficiency.

  • Random process plays a major role in wireless communication system to analytically derive the probability distribution function of the various statistical distribution. In this paper, we derive the decreasing function of the exponential distribution under the given condition which is expressed as wireless channel condition. The probability distribution function of Gaussian, Laplacian, Rayleigh and Nakagami distribution are also derived. Extensive simulation results of these statistical distributions are provided to prove that random process has a significant role in the wireless communications. In addition, the Rayleigh and Rician channels show specific examples of visible distance communication and invisible distance channel environment. This paper is motivated by that we assume a block fading channel model, where the channel is constant during a transmission block and changes independently between consecutive transmission block, can achieve a better performance in high SNR regime with i.i.d channel. This algorithm for realizing these transforms can be applied to the Kronecker MIMO channel.

The Relationship between Children's Information Processing and Basic Learning Abilities (유아의 정보처리능력과 기초학습능력 간 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between children's information processing ability and basic learning abilities. To collect the data, two tests were given to 99 children. The Korean K-ABC(Moon & Byun, 1997) and Pictorial Basic Learning Abilities for Children(Kim, 2011) were used to examine the relationship between children's information processing and basic learning abilities. The collected data were analyzed by correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. According to the results of this study, there was a significant positive correlation between information processing(sequential processing, simultaneous processing) and basic learning abilities including reading, writing, and basic mathematics. And information processing significantly affected basic learning abilities. Namely, simultaneous processing explained 22% of basic learning abilities and by adding sequential processing, the explanation was increased to 25%. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest various implications about children's basic learning abilities. These implications will help teachers and parents to understand their children's learning.

Selective Histogram Matching of Multi-temporal High Resolution Satellite Images Considering Shadow Effects in Urban Area (도심지역의 그림자 영향을 고려한 다시기 고해상도 위성영상의 선택적 히스토그램 매칭)

  • Additional high resolution satellite images, other period or site, are essential for efficient city modeling and analysis. However, the same ground objects have a radiometric inconsistency in different satellite images and it debase the quality of image processing and analysis. Moreover, in an urban area, buildings, trees, bridges, and other artificial objects cause shadow effects, which lower the performance of relative radiometric normalization. Therefore, in this study, we exclude shadow areas and suggest the selective histogram matching methods for image based application without supplementary digital elevation model or geometric informations of sun and sensor. We extract the shadow objects first using adjacency informations with the building edge buffer and spatial and spectral attributes derived from the image segmentation. And, Outlier objects like a asphalt roads are removed. Finally, selective histogram matching is performed from the shadow masked multi-temporal Quickbird-2 images.

  • We propose a stylized facial illustration method that expresses important features of a target highly abstractly but effectively from a human facial picture. Our method first detects facial components such as eyes and their associated regions from an input image, and then uses the detected results to render a stylized portrait. Our illustration method mainly consists of two key components and additional components: a tonal illustration component to draw simple tones, a line illustration component to draw a set of lines, and additional illustration components for hair, clothes. etc. The illustration part of the proposed method aims at illustrating features of a target effectively in a highly abstracted way like hand-drawn paintings. In order to achieve this goal, our method adopts an oriental black-ink painting style, which expresses objects effectively with empty spaces and simple expressions such as abstracted lines.
