  • Acidovorax valerianellae had been reported a causal agent of bacterial black spot disease on corn salad in France, 2003 and on watermelon in Korea 2011. In this study, difference in host specificity between 2 groups, corn salad strains and watermelon strains, of Acidovorax valerianellae was recognized and compared. In the pathogenicity test, all 5 watermelon strains showed pathogenicity on the 6 Cucurbitaceae plants but not on corn salad, whereas 4 corn salad strains showed pathogenicity only on the corn salad. Utilization of Biolog substrates was different between watermelon strains and corn salad strains on 4 substrates, Malonic Acid, ${\alpha}-Hydroxybutyric$ Acid, ${\alpha}-Keto$ Butyric Acid, and Glycyl-L Glutamic Acid. The phylogenetic tree built with the 16S rDNA sequences showed that all of A. valerianellae stains was grouped into 1 clade separating from the other species of Acidovorax genus. Within A. valerianellae clade, watermelon strains and corn salad strains were separated into 2 sub-groups. REP-PCR analysis also separated the two groups. Host specificity, substrate utilization, and some genetic characteristics suggested that there are two pathogenic groups, watermelon group and corn salad group in A. valerianellae.

  • Fifteen strains of the nitrogen fixer Axospirillum were isolated from the rhizosphere of rice collected from Kyonggi-do and Chungcheongnam in Korea. They had strong acetylene-reducing activity of 400 of 900 nmol $C_2H_4$ per hour vial had a similar morphology in succinate-malate medium: vibrioid cells having a diameter of 1.0 ${\mu}m$ and a monopolar single flagellum in liquid media. According to their physiological and morphological characteristics, they were divided into two distinct groups, group I and group II. Group I strain were, unlike group II, distinguished by their ability to use glucose as a sole carbon source in nitrogen-free medium, requirement for biotin, and formation of wider, longer, and S-shaped cells in semisolid nitrogen-free malate medium. On the basis of their characteristics, strains belonging to group I were identified as Azospirillum lipoferum, while those belonging to group II were identified as Azospirillum brasilense.

  • Communications for mobile sink groups such as rescue teams or platoons bring about a new challenging issue for handling mobility in wireless sensor networks. To do this, many studies have been proposed to support mobile sink groups. When closely looking at mobile sink groups, they can be divided into (multiple) small groups according to the property of applications. For example, a platoon can be divided into multiple squads to carry out its mission in the battle field. However, the previous studies cannot efficiently support the division of mobile sink groups because they do not address three challenging issues engendered by the mobile sink group division. The first issue is to select a leader sink for a new small mobile sink group. The efficient data delivery from a source to small mobile sink groups is the second issue. Last, the third issue is to share data between leader sinks of small mobile sink groups. Thus, this paper proposes a routing protocol to efficiently support the division of mobile sink groups by solving the three challenging issues. For the first issue, the proposed protocol selects a leader sink of a new small mobile sink group which provide a minimum summation of the distance between the new leader sink and the previous leader sink and the distance from the new leader sink to all of its member sinks. For the efficient data delivery from a source to small mobile sink groups in the second issue, the proposed protocol determines the path to minimize the data dissemination distance from source to small mobile sink group by calculating with the location information of both the source and the leader sinks. With regard to the third issue, the proposed protocol exploits member sinks located among leader sinks to provide efficient data sharing among leaders sinks by considering the location information of member sinks. Simulation results verified that the proposed protocol is superior to the previous protocol in terms of the energy consumption.

  • The nucleotide sequences of the 5'-untraslated region(5'-UTR) of Hepatitis G virus(HGV) from sera of Korean patients were determines. When compared to the previously reported isolates, the Korean isolates have higher sequence homology with the Japanese isolates indicating the geographic distribution of HGV variants. Interestingly, three discrete regions which are highly conserved among HGV isolates from the same geographical area, thus could be applied to distinguish HGV isolates from the different areas were noticed in the 5'-UTR. Based on the sequences of these group-specific regions, twenty four different HGV isolates could be classified into 5 groups. By using the group-specific regions, inconsistency in HGV typing when based on the different regions of HGV could be solved.

  • A simple micro-sampling system is described which facilitates isolation and concentration of complex organic constituents into three fractions of different volatilities. The method involves the headspace trapping of very volatile components from a complex matrix onto a porous polymer, Tenax GC, followed by the solvent elution of the matrix and the subsequent fractions of the eluate into volatile and less-volatile fractions. The headspace and the volatile fractions are then analyzed by high-resolution capillary gas chromatography. The less-volatile fraction is analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. Experimental details and the results obtained using tobacco leaves as a complex organic matrix are presented.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of group music therapy program on alineation of adolescents from enmeshed or disengaged families. The Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales III was administered to screen out subjects at a high school in Seoul. Based on the low scores, between 10 and 25, rated on the scale, 4 students were selected from 148 initial respondents. Subjects participated in group music therapy program for 7 weeks and a total of 14 music therapy sessions were provided for them. After the program, content analysis of the subjects' verbal and musical expressions observed during the program was conducted, with regard to the measures of the Student Alienation Scale. The results showed negative self-expression decreased while positive self-concepts increased. These results indicate that by providing the opportunity to experience group cohesiveness and group support, group music therapy program may effectively reduce alienation of adolescents from enmeshed or disengaged families.

  • To provide basic information for Verticillium spp., molecular methods were applied to analyze genetic characteristics within Verticillium spp. including Verticillium dahliae, isolated from diseased plants in two regions of Korea. Five Korean isolates of V. dahliae causing Verticillium wilt on chrysanthemum were analyzed, together with six other Verticillium spp., using mitochondrial small subunit rRNA gene (rns) sequence and random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). In a phylogenetic tree based on rns region sequences, Korean V. dahliae isolates formed a single clade with foreign isolates, whereas the other Verticillium spp. formed separate groups. In addition to rns sequence analysis, a dendrogram based on RAPD fragment patterns also showed clustering of all V. dahliae isolates into one group, separate from the six different Verticillium spp., and the V. dahliae isolates formed three subgroups which corresponded to the regions of origin, Kumi, Busan city and Canada. This indicates that high genetic variation exists between regions, although the fungus was isolated from the same host plant, chrysanthemum. These results provide the foundation for the study of genetic diversity and relationships among V. dahliae isolates in Korea.

  • The micelle process was developed for pre-purifying paclitaxel from plant cell cultures of Taxus chinensis, giving a high purity and yield. The approach in this work was to transfer paclitaxel in the crude extract to an aqueous surfactant solution as a micelle, allowing organic solvents to be used for removal of lipids and non-polar impurities. In this work, the effects of various surfactants such as CPC, CTMAC, LTMAC, SDS, AOT, Tween, PEG, and Triton were examined on the yield, purity, and phase separation time in micelle process. Among these surfactants, CTMAC (5%, w/v) gave the best result in terms of paclitaxel yield (${\sim}99%$), purity (${\sim}21%$), and phase separation time (30 min). The use of micelles in the pre-purification process allows for rapid and efficient separation of paclitaxel from interfering compounds and dramatically increases the yield and purity of crude paclitaxel for subsequent purification steps.
