Application of Laboratory Pressurized Vane Shear Test and Discrete Element Method for Determination of Foam-conditioned Soil Properties (폼제에 의해 개선된 흙의 물성 도출을 위한 실내 가압 베인 전단시험 및 개별요소법의 적용)

  • In earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM tunnelling, the application of soil conditioning which improves properties of the excavated muck by additives injection, is generally used for enhancing the performance of TBM. Therefore it is important to apply the soil conditioning in the numerical model which simulates excavation performance of TBM equipment, but related studies on a method that simulates soil conditioning are insufficient to date. Accordingly, in this study, an laboratory pressurized vane test apparatus was devised to evaluate the characteristics of conditioned soil. Using the apparatus, the vane shear tests were performed on foam-conditioned soil with different shear rates, and the test was numerically simulated with discrete element method (DEM). Finally, the contact properties of particles in DEM were determined by comparing the results of test and analysis, and it indicates that the applicability of pressurized vane test and DEM model for reproducing soil conditioning in TBM excavation model with DEM.

  • In this study, we carried out finite element analysis for drill bit design on ground boring. We verified analysis between drill bit analysis results and experiment results of test machine. From the study, the results expect that time and cost reduction for experiment using finite element analysis for determination on drill bit geometry and material property.

Manufacturing of an earth pressure balanced shield TBM cutterhead for a subsea discharge tunnel and its field performance analysis (해저 배출관로 건설을 위한 토압식 쉴드TBM 커터헤드의 설계·제작 및 현장 굴진성능의 분석)

  • An earth pressure balanced shield TBM with the diameter of 4.4 m was designed and manufactured for a subsea discharge tunnel excavation. Its cutterhead was designed to be optimized for the strongest rock mass condition in the tunnel alignment, and then the applicability of the refurbished shield TBM was validated for its maximum capacity. Especially, the maximum cutter penetration depth for the strongest rock mass condition should be kept to be below 7 mm/rev in order to satisfy the allowable capacities of the shield TBM. From the analysis of TBM advance data, approximately 95% of field data showed the cutter penetration depth below 7 mm/rev. In addition, it was certified that the acting forces of every disc cutter, TBM thrust and torque during TBM driving were within the allowable capacities of the shield TBM and its disc cutters. When real acting forces of the disc cutters in the field were compared with those predicted by the CSM model, they showed the close relationships with each other even though the predictions by the CSM model were approximately 22~25% higher than field data.

Refurbishment of a 3.6 m earth-pressure balanced shield TBM with a domestic cutterhead and its field verification (국산 커터헤드를 장착한 직경 3.6 m 토압식 쉴드TBM의 제작과 현장적용성 분석)

  • A domestic cutterhead with the diameter of 3.6 m was designed and manufactured in this study. Then, it was attached to an existing earth-pressure balanced shield TBM to excavate a cable tunnel with the length of 1,275 m. Especially, the procedures for TBM cutterhead design and its corresponding performance prediction were also summarized. From field data analyses of the refurbished shield TBM, its maximum advance rate was recorded as 14.4 m/day. Penetration depths of disc cutters were found to be approximately 4 mm/rev, which is equal to the maximum penetration depth designed for the strongest rock strength condition in the target tunnel. Every TBM operating thrust and cutter normal force during TBM driving was much smaller than their corresponding maximum capacities. When cutter acting forces recorded in the field were analyzed, their prediction errors by the CSM model were very high for weak rock conditions. In addition, rock strength showed very close relationships with cutter normal force and penetration depth.

  • The Incheon Metro Line 1 Geomdan Extension Phase 1 is the first project in South Korea where both a roadheader and TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) are being used together. The shield TBM tunnel section is 1,057 m long, and is mostly composed of rock, including the section beneath the Airport Railroad and the Gyeongin Ara Waterway. A 7.8 m earth pressure balance shield TBM was used for tunnel excavation. The average monthly advance rate for both the North and South tracks is 239.1 m, with a maximum monthly advance rate of 334.5 m. This technical article comprehensively evaluates the productivity of the shield TBM, focusing on the TBM excavation performance. Above all, it aims to provide useful reference material for the successful execution of shield TBM tunnel construction.

  • In this study, the LCM was applied as the preliminary study for the cutterhead design of TBM and the drilling performance evaluation. The optimum cutting condition is obtained from the LCM tests and the effects of the design factors of IBM cutterhead, such as penetration depth and cutter spacing, on drilling performance are estimated. In this study, hence, to predict the accurate performance of TBM, instead of one-dimensional penetration depth applied in existing studies, three-dimensional cutting volume was quantified and measured. For this, the digital photogrammetry technique was applied to the LCM tests. Also, AUTODYN 2D was applied to investigate the applicability of the numerical analysis technique to simulate the cutting process of rock by the TBM disc cutter.

Development of penetration rate prediction model using shield TBM excavation data (쉴드 TBM 현장 굴진데이터를 이용한 굴착속도 예측모델 개발)

  • Mechanized tunneling methods, including shield TBM, have been increasingly used for tunnel construction because of their relatively low vibration and noise levels as well as low risk of rock-falling accidents. In the excavation using the shield TBM, it is important to design penetration rate appropriately. In present study, both subsurface investigation data and shield TBM excavation data, produced for and during ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}{\sim}{\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ high-speed railway construction, were analyzed and used to compare with shield TBM penetration rates calculated using existing penetrating rate prediction models proposed by several foreign researchers. The correlation between thrust force per disk cutter and uniaxial compressive strength was also examined and, based on the correlation analysis, a simple prediction model for penetration rate was derived. The prediction results using the existing prediction models showed approximately error rates of 50~500%, whereas the results from the simple model proposed from this study showed an error rate of 15% in average. It may be said, therefore, that the proposed model has higher applicability for shield TBM construction in similar ground conditions.

  • This study suggests the prediction model to estimate the specific energy of a pick cutter using a gene expression programming (GEP) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Estimating the performance of mechanical excavators is of crucial importance in early design stage of tunnelling projects, and the specific energy (SE) based approach serves as a standard performance prediction procedure that is applicable to all excavation machines. The purpose of this research, is to investigate the relationship between UCS and BTS, penetration depth, cut spacing, and SE. A total of 46 full-scale linear cutting test results using pick cutters and different values of depth of cut and cut spacing on various rock types was collected from the previous study for the analysis. The Mean Squared Error (MSE) associated with the conventional Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) method is more than two times larger than the MSE generated by GEP-PSO algorithm. The $R^2$ value associated with the GEP-PSO algorithm, is about 0.13 higher than the $R^2$ associated with MLR.

Development of disc cutter wear sensor prototype and its verification for ensuring construction safety of utility cable tunnels (전력구 터널 건설안전 확보를 위한 디스크커터 마모측정시스템 시작품 개발 및 성능검증)

  • Most of utility cable tunnels are constructed utilizing shield TBM as part of the underground transmission line project. The TBM chamber is the only space inside the tunnel that encounters rock and soil, and is the place with the highest frequency of accident exposure, such as collapse and collision accidents. Since there is currently no way to measure the disc cutter wear from outside the chamber, frequent inspection by workers is essential. Accordingly, in this study, in order to prevent safety accidents inside the TBM chamber and expect the effect of shortening the construction period by reducing the number of chamber openings, the concept of disk cutter wear measurement technology was established and a prototype was produced. By considering prior technology and determining that magnetic sensors are most suitable for the excavation environment, wear measurement sensor package were developed integrating magnetic sensors, wireless communication modules, power supply, external casing, and monitoring systems. To verify the performance of the prototype in an actual excavation environment, a full-scale tunnelling test was performed using a 3.6 m EPB shield TBM. Based on the full-scale tests, five prototypes were operated normally among eight prototypes. It was analyzed that sensor measurement, wireless communication, and durability performance were secured within a maximum thrust of 3,000 kN and a rotation speed of 1.5 RPM.

  • Drilling operation is the most important and costly essential work in oil and gas exploration and development. Therefore, the studies about rate of penetration have been carried out continuously to improve drilling efficiency. In recent years, data-driven models have been developed by various researchers to overcome disadvantages of traditional mathematical models. For the data-driven models, selecting proper algorithms and parameters is very important. In addition, data-driven models should be retrained in real-time during continuous drilling operations in order to improve the model performance. In this paper, the latest studies are investigated to provide information about algorithms, drilling parameters and model retraining intervals that used in drilling optimization.
