  • 2차원 슬랩 형태의 단일 결함 레이저는 낮은 발진 문턱값과 작은 모드 부피로 인해 문턱 없는 레이저의 동작 가능성, 광자 집적 회로에서의 광원 소자 등으로 각광을 받고 있다. 광결정은 결정 구조에 따라 삼각격자와 사각격자로 나눌 수 있는데, 특히 삼각격자의 경우 사각격자에 비해 밴드갭이 보다 넓은 주파수 영역에 걸쳐 나타나므로, 공진기와 도파로서의 응용에 더 적합한 소재로 연구되고 있다. 2차원 삼각구조 단일 결함 광결정은 60$^{\circ}$회전에 대하여 대칭성을 가지므로, 군론에 따라 기본적으로 60$^{\circ}$,120$^{\circ}$,180$^{\circ}$,360$^{\circ}$의 회전 대칭성을 가지고 있는 네 종류의 모드가 존재한다. Two Approaches to Introducing Abstract Algebra to Undergraduate Students (추상대수학 강좌의 두 가지 접근 방법)

  • There can be two different approaches to introducing Abstract Algebra to undergraduate students: One is to introduce group concept prior to ring concept, and the other is to do the other way around. Although the former is almost conventional, it is worth while to take the latter into consideration in the viewpoint that students are already familiar to rings of integers and polynomials. In this paper, we investigated 16 most commonly used Abstract Algebra undergraduate textbooks and found that 5 of them introduce ring theory prior to group theory while the rest do the other way around. In addition, we interviewed several undergraduate students who already have taken an Abstract Algebra course to look into which approach they prefer. Then we compare pros and cons of two approaches on the basis of the results of the interview and the historico-genetic principle of teaching and learning in Abstract Algebra and suggest that it certainly be one of alternatives to introduce ring theory before group theory in its standpoint.

Superspace Symmetry of the Incommensurate Phase in Barium Sodium Niobate ($Ba_2NaNb_5O_{15}$에서의 Inocmmensurate상의 초공간 대칭성)

  • It is shown that the symmetry of the incommensurate phase in Ba2NaNb5O15(BSH) belongs to the four dimensional superspace group C from an analysis of the systematic extinction or the rxtra reflections due to the incommensllrate structure. The resulting superstructure is characterizetl by the space group Ima2(C3l) and the origin of the incommensurability in BSN is briefly discussed. Especially. HREM image have shown the prrscnce of discommensurations. In addition. a group-theoretical consideration of structural phase transitions in BSN is suggested.

Study of the Librational Motion of $H_2$O Molecules in Hydrates by Neutron Inelastic Scattering

  • Neutron inelastic scattering studies on polycrystalline hydrates, NaBr-2$H_2O$ and BaCl$_2$-2$H_2O$ have been performed to observe librational modes. Assuming all observed peaks are from the $H_2O$ librational origin, the weighted frequency distribution functions are obtained by eliminating the contributions from the higher order processes. All of theoretical frequencies obtained using FG matrix method are dus to highly mixed modes, and therefore the modes identified as significant $H_2O$ librationat modes from their large potential energy distributions are assigned to the observed peaks. The H-bond interactions are estimated using a modified Lippincott Schroeder potential function, and the applicability of the potential function to the H-bond with highly bent or bifurcated configuration is examined on the basis of the shape of $H_2O$ librational potential energies. Some discussions are given on the usefulness of introducing O-H…Y bending terms in addition to the H…Y stretching in similar frequency calculation in order to obtain more information on the nature of H-bond. Also the purity and symmetry properties of the $H_2O$ librational modes are discussed using group theoretical analyses.

Algebraic Structure for the Recognition of Korean Characters (한글 문자의 인식을 위한 대수적 구조)

  • The paper examined the character structure as a basic study for the recognition of Korean characters. In view of concave structure, line structure and node relationship of character graph, the algebraic structure of the basic Korean characters is are analized. Also, the degree of complexities in their character structure is discussed and classififed. Futhermore, by describing the fact that some equivalence relations are existed between the 10 vowels of rotational transformation group by Affine transformation of one element into another, it could be pointed out that the geometrical properting in addition to the topological properties are very important for the recognition of Korean characters.
