A Study on the Route Selection Method for Demand Response Transport (DRT) Replacement for Bus Services in Vulnerable Areas - Focused on Region Vulnerable to Public Transportation of GyeongSangNam-Do in Korea - (벽지노선 대체형 수요응답형교통(DRT) 노선 선정 방안에 관한 연구 - 경상남도 대중교통 열악지역을 대상으로 -)

  • Due to the rapid pace of low fertility and aging of Korea, population decline is rapidly progressing in the outskirts of the province and county. Demand for public transport is decreasing due to suburban population declines, while local government funding for maintenance of the bus system is expected to increase gradually. The government and municipalities are promoting the introduction of Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) in order to reduce the burden of financial support for buses while enhancing mobility of the residents in vulnerable areas. However, most DRTs in Korea have been operated mainly in the areas that are not provided with public transportation services. Although DRT is able to reduce the financial burden of local governments, it is not easy to be introduced because of the objection of the existing bus users. In this study, 11 out of 61 towns with poor public transportation services in Gyeongsangnam-Do were selected for the introduction of DRT to replace bus services by using village characteristics. The results of this study are expected to be used as a basis for decision making to use DRT instead of bus service for the burden of bus financing for local governments.

Elderly Driver-involved Crash Analysis and Crash Data Policy (기계학습을 활용한 고령운전자 교통사고 분석 및 교통사고 데이터 정책 제언)

  • Currently, in our society with a substantial and increasing fraction of the elderly population, transport safety for elderly drivers is becoming the center of attention. However, deficient data on vehicle crashes in South Korea limits the growth of traffic accident research pertaining to the country. So, we complemented South Korean vehicle crash data by examining USA vehicle crash data, especially the data of Ohio State, and analyzing the influential factors of elderly driver-involved crashes of the State. Subsequently, we suggested a way of improving the South Korean dataset. Notably, our study showed that the influential factors were vehicle speed, posted speed, and following other vehicles too close and provided them in the South Korean dataset.

A Study on the Effectiveness of Intelligent Transport Systems on National Highways (국도상의 지능형교통시스템의 효과성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Intelligent Transport Systems(ITS) has been currently growing attention in industry as hightech traffic system and ITS infrastructure has been built not only on expressway but also on national highways. Although the effect of ITS installation on national highways is not easy to measure with quantitative methodology, it is necessary to develop the quantitative method to verify the effect accurate analysis of ITS effect. In this study, the analysis of cost efficiency of ITS project carried out by Iksan Regional Constriction Management Administration(IRCMA) was conducted. Analysis period and discount rate were assumed as 10 years and 5.5%, respectively. Several measures of the effect including reduction of travel time, CO2 discharged and fuel and the value of Variable Message Sign(VMS) information were proposed. Concludingly, ITS project implemented by IRCMA appeared to be cost effective, indicating 1.20 of B/C ratio, 12.4% of IRR and W1.48 billion of NPV.

  • Transportation system improved with rapid economic growth has helped human being a lot. However, the system has been also created social problems. The fast increasing auto ownership has not only increased transportation accidents but decreased air quality rapidly. One of the serious problems in transportation is that transportation policies have disregarded human factor, especially pedestrian environment. This research has developed microscopic pedestrian simulation with Netlogo. Netlogo is a very useful program for simulating complex systems such as pedestrian movements. The simulated pedestrian movements has been compared with actual surveyed pedestrian movements on a sidewalk. The comparison has been showed that the simulation program can be used for analyzing various pedestrian environments. Also, the impacts of bollard on the sidewalks have been analyed with the simulation program.

This editorial describes the introduction of the project and papers presented in this special edition.

  • 교통수단을 효율적으로 잘 활용하는 나라가 세계의 주도권을 행사해 왔다면 지나친 비약이라고 생각하는 사람이 있을지 모르겠으나, 해가 지지않는 나라로 찬란하 문화와 부를 구가했던 영국은 19세기 산업혁명에 의해 세계 최초의 증기 기관차를 개발했고, 20세기초에 들어 세계의 부를 누렸던 미국은 그야말로 자동차의 나라라고 할만큼 많은 자동차를 개발해왔다. 이제 맞이해야 될 21세기의 세계 역시, 어떤 나라가 새로운 교통 system을 개발하느냐 하는것도 관심의 대상이 아닐 수 없다. 앞으로는 지금까지 살아온 세대보다도 더 많은 사람의 교류와 정보의 전달 및 물자의 이동이 필요하기 때문이다. 지금 연구에 박차를 가하고 있는 21세기의 항공분야도 초음속 여객기가 상업화되어 그들의 주장대로 서울에서 Losangeles 간을 4시간대에 비행한든지, 뉴욕과 파리간이 2시간 이내에 비행된다면 세계는 어떻게 변모할 것이며, Europe 대륙에서 영국 Dover 해협을 해저로 통과하는 초고속 열차에 의해 Europe을 한 덩어리로 묶고, Europe 대륙에서 Asia 대륙을 횡단하는 초고속 열차가 실용화된다면 세계는 어떻게 변모 할 것인지를 생각해 볼때, 일일 생활권에 놓인 세계는 사회, 경제, 문화면에서 급속한 변화를 겪게 될 것은 분명하다. 이러한 시대적 변화에 순응하기 위해 우리나라에서도 서울, 부산을 2시간대로 운행 할 수 있는 초고속 열차가 추진되고 있고, 이 서울, 부산간을 축으로 하는 경부 고속전철이 완공된 후 서울에서 광주, 서울에서 강릉을 연결하는 국토종합 개발권의 고속전철이 운행된다면, 지역간 시간적 거리가 단축되고 국토 구조도 많이 변모할 것이며, 행정기관의 지방이전이나 서울 중심의 경제적, 문화적 기능들이 지방으로 많이 분산되어 좁은 국토지만 보다 효율적으로 활용될 것으로 기대된다. 이러한 명제를 안고 추진되는 우리나라의 고속전철사업을 생각하면서 이미 실용화된 선진각국의 고속전철에서 사용되고 있는 중전기기들이 어떻게 응용되고 있는지 살펴보기로 하자.

A Study on a mountain train operation (산악열차 운행에 관한 연구)

  • Korea, a peninsular country with distances of approximate 840 kms south-north and 1,200 kms east-west, currently has only three types of rail transport mode in operation; high-speed KTX, regional railway and urban rapid rail transit. It is very unfortunate that there exists no mountain train system across the country yet, which could be able to contribute both to the promotion of tourism and to a higher affordability of public transport means in the city. This type of rail mode system is more desiring when taking account the fact that 75% of the land topographically belongs to mountainous area. With this background in mind, among others, it is suggested that a mountain train system be laid over the scenic Bukhan Mountain in Seoul linking Gupabal station in line 3 and Ssangmun station line 4. This project would surely require an advancing review on its feasibility and approving result.

A Visualization of Traffic Accidents Hotspot along the Road Network (도로 네트워크를 따른 교통사고 핫스팟의 시각화)

  • In recent years, the number of traffic accidents caused by car accidents has been decreasing steadily due to traffic accident prevention activities in Korea. However, the number of accidents in Seoul is higher than that of other regions. Various studies have been conducted to prevent traffic accidents, which are human disasters. In particular, previous studies have performed the spatial analysis of traffic accidents by counting the number of traffic accidents by administrative districts or by estimating the density through kernel density method in order to identify the traffic accident cluster areas. However, since traffic accidents take place along the road, it would be more meaningful to investigate them concentrated on the road network. In this study, traffic accidents were assigned to the nearest road network in two ways and analyzed by hotspot analysis using Getis-Ord Gi* statistics. One of them was investigated with a fixed road link of 10m unit, and the other by computing the average traffic accidents per unit length per road section. As a result by the first method, it was possible to identify the specific road sections where traffic accidents are concentrated. On the other hand, the results by the second method showed that the traffic accident concentrated areas are extensible depending on the characteristic of the road links. The methods proposed here provide different approaches for visualizing the traffic accidents and thus, make it possible to identify those sections clearly that need improvement as for the traffic environment.
