  • Vibration localization characteristics of mistuned repeated structures are investigated. The mistuning often creates significant response discrepancies among subcomponents of a repeated structure. As the result of the discrepancies, critical fatigue often occurs in a repeated structure. Therefore, it is of great importance to predict the vibration response of the mistuned repeated structures accurately. In this paper, a simplified model is employed and dimensionless parameters that influence the localization characteristics are identified. Through parameter study, two localization phenomena are investigated and compared.

  • In a plastic metal forming of thermally rate-sensitive material, the localized shear band stems from evolution of a narrow region in which intensive plastic flow occurs. And it give rise to fatal fracture with plastic instability. The objectives of this study are to investigate the localization behavior by using numerical method and predict the failure for WHA(Tungsten Heavy Alloy). In this work, the implicit finite difference scheme is used because of the advantage about convergence and the numerical stability. This study is based on an analysed material with hardening as well as thermally softening behavior which includes isotropic strain hardening and observed the extension of localization within shear band according to material properties.

  • This paper presents a segmental scheme for regions-composed images in local normalization process. The scheme is based on local statistics computed through a moving window. The normalization algorithm uses linear or nonlinear functions to transfer the pixel distribution and the homogeneous affine of regions which is corrupted by additive noise. It adjusts the mean and standard deviation for nearest-neighbor interpoint distance between current and the normalized image signals and changes the segmentation performance according to local statistics and parameter variation adaptively. The performance of newly advanced local normalization algorithm is evaluated and compared to the performance of conventional normalization methods. Experimental results are presented to show the region segmentation properties of these approaches.

  • The failure behavior of RC structure was exceedingly affected by the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone due to the strain localization behavior on the tension softening materials. However, it is very difficult to quantify and assess the local strain occurring in the failure zone by the conventional test method. In this study, image processing technology, which is available to measure the strain up to the complete failure of RC structures, was used to estimate the local strain distribution and the size of failure zone. In order to verify the reliability and validity for the image processing technology, the strain transition acquired by the image processing technology was compared with strain values measured by the concrete gauge on the uniaxial compressive specimens. Based on the verification of image processing technology for the uniaxial compressive specimens, the size and the local strain distribution of the failure zone of deep beam was measured using the image processing technology. With the results of test, the principal tensile/compressive strain contours were drawn. Using the strain contours, the size of the failure zone and the local strain distribution on the failure of the deep beam was evaluated. The results of strain contour showed that image processing technology is available to assess the failure behavior of deep beam and obtain the local strain values on the domain of the post-peak failure comparatively.

  • The possibility of micro/nano machining through electro-chemical process is discussed in this research. Electro-chemical dissolution region is localized within 1 ${\mu}m$ by applying ultra short pulses with tens of nanosecond duration. The effects of voltage, pulse duration, and pulse frequency on the localization distance are investigated. Localization distance can be manipulated by controlling the voltage and pulse duration, and various hole shapes are produced including stepped holes and taper free hole. High quality micro-hole with 8 ${\mu}m$ diameter with 20 ${\mu}m$ depth and micro-groove with 9 ${\mu}m$ width with 10 ${\mu}m$ depth are machined on 304 stainless steel.

  • In periodic cyclic structures, small property irregularity of their substructured often causes significant difference in their dynamic responses, which results in unpredicted premature failures. The small irregularity and the resulting phenomenon are called the mistuning and the vibration localization, respectively. In this paper a simple coupled multi-pendulum system is employed to investigate the effects of the stiffness mistuning and the phase difference in excitation force on the vibration localization of periodic cyclic structures.

  • Dynamic response localization of simple mistuned periodic structures is presented in this paper Mistuning in periodic structures can cause forced responses that are much larger than those of perfectly tuned structures. So mistuning results in the critical impact on high cycle fatigue of structures. Thus, it is of great importance to predict the mistuned forced response in an efficient way. In this paper, forced responses of coupled pendulum systems are investigated to identify the localization effect of periodic structures. The effects of mistuning and damping on the maximum forced response are examined. It is found that certain conditions of mistuning and coupling can cause strong localization and the localization becomes significant under weak damping. It is also found that the maximum forced response increases as the number of Periodic structures increases.

  • In periodically repeated cyclic structures, small property irregularity of their substructures often causes significant difference in their dynamic responses. which results in unpredicted premature failures. The small irregularity and the resulting phenomenon are called the mistuning and the vibration localization. respectively. In this paper, the vibration localization phenomena due to mistuned coupling effects are investigated. To effectively achieve the objective, a simple coupled multi-pendulum system Is employed. The results show that if there exists some coupling stiffness irregularity, vibration localization may occur and becomes more predominant as the number of substructures increases.
