  • In this paper, we propose the enhanced Assessment Model of the Embedded Software Process(MND-ESPAM) which is suitable for the development work of weapons in Korea. In 2008. We developed the MND-ESPAM which is the assessment criteria of software process, but this model is inefficient to apply to Korean military area. Therefore, we elicit and analyze the problems of MND-ESPAM through tow methods. One is to research on the actual condition of the domestic defense industry about software process management. And the other is to apply MND-ESPAM to the defense companies acquiring CMMI level. In order to overcome these problems elicited above, we provide solutions to make MND-ESPAM linked with Software Development Process Guide of Defense Acquisition Program Administration(DAPA) and to systematically strengthen testing activities and to reduce the number of process areas. The proposed model was proved by two objective methods such as checking the coverage with CMMI and whether it is satisfied or not by modified requirements ISO/IEC 14598-3. At last, experts in the field of software process confirmed the effect of MND-ESPAM through applying MND-ESPAM to the defense industry company.

  • Recently, software has taken up an increasing share of the weapons system. The software development environment is also becoming very diverse. In the field of weapons software, software technical documents, source codes, and execution files are standardized as defense standards material. Through defense standards, the software file lists and development environments for creating software execution files are required to be documented. However, additional efforts to rebuild the software development environment are needed to recreate the software execution file based on defense standards material after the end of R&D. Therefore, in this study, we propose an improvement method for the quality of software standards material using virtualization technology. This is expected to reduce efforts to rebuild the software development environment and solve problems caused by discontinuation of the development environment.

  • Recently, as the weight of software in the weapon system increases, the quality of the software becomes a very important factor. In order to improve the quality of the weapon system software, DAPA(Defense Acquisition Program Administration) has institutionalized software reliability in Weapon System Software Development and Management Manual. The manual presents specific methods and procedures to improve the weapon system software quality. In order to meet the required reliability test standards specified in the manual, it is necessary to continuously detect and correct defects throughout the entire development period. However, it is difficult to build proper reliability test environment due to the cost of software reliability tools, setting up secured and separated network environment, and etc. Therefore, in this study, we propose an efficient environment construction method for software reliability test of defense industry field in restricted development environment and limited resources.

  • The importance of software in military weapon systems is increasing, and the software structure is becoming more complicated. We therefore must thoroughly verify its reliability. In particular, the defects from the interaction of the software components that make up the weapon system are difficult to prevent only with static testing and code coverage level dynamic testing. In this paper, we classify dynamic software defect types and analyze the issues reported in the Open Source Software (OSS) used in the US department of defense weapon systems. The dynamic defects classified in this paper usually occur after integration, and it is difficult to reproduce and identify the cause. Based on this analysis, we come to the point that the software integration test must be enhanced in order to verify the reliability of the weapon system.

  • As the portion of software cost in construction of the system related to the national defence is getting higher, the required accuracy of cost estimation on defense software in development is also getting higher. The PRICE S is used to estimate the software cost at the first stage in the development of software promptly. However, the PRICE S is appropriate for the American environment not for the Korean circumstances. Thus, we will present a method to compensate the PRICE S with comparing with the model of Korea Software Industry Association. Moreover, we also present another method to estimate software cost based on function point with backfiring approach, which will be used for the software projects planned. Finally, we expect that our works will provide a solution for applying the function point in the future and will increase the accuracy of cost estimation in software development.

  • This paper focuses on reverse simulation methods to find and analyze the required performance of a defense system under a given combat effectiveness. Our approach is motivated that forward simulation, that traditionally employs the effectiveness analysis of performance alternatives, is not suitable for resolving the above issue because it causes a high computational cost due to repeating simulations of all possible alternatives. To this end, the paper proposes a reverse simulation software architecture, which consists of several functional sub-modules that facilitate two types of reverse simulations according to possibility of inverse model design. The proposed architecture also enable to apply various search algorithms to find required operational capability efficiently. With this architecture, we performed two case studies about underwater and anti-air warfare scenarios. The case studies show that the proposed reverse simulation incurs a smaller computational cost, while finding the same level of performance alternatives compared with traditional forward simulation. Finally we expect that this study provides a guide those who desire to make decisions about new defense systems development.

  • Recently, software quality evaluation based on ISO/IEC 9126 and ISO/IEC 14598 has been widely accepted in various areas. However, these standards for software quality do not provide practical guidelines to apply the quality model and the evaluation process of software product=5. And the qualify management in most software projects has been conducted by managing defects without applying the standards for software qualify. Thus, we present a quantitative quality evaluation approach of artifacts in the Component Based Development (CBD). Particularly, our evaluation approach allows most of the standard evaluation process and adopts a quantitative quality model which uses the weights of quality characteristics obtained through carefully selected questionnaires for stakeholder and Analytic Hierarchical Process(AHP). Moreover, we have also examined the proposed evaluation approach with applying the checklists for the artifacts of the CBD to a small-scale software project. As a result, we believe that the proposed approach will be helpful for acquiring the high quality software.
