  • To rationally secure and maintain the safety and serviceability of a high-rise building, monitoring of structural responses of members is necessary. As such health monitoring of large-scale building structures has received growing attention by researchers in recent years. However, due to a very large number of members complexity of structural responses of a high-rise building structure, practical difficulties exist in selection of structural members to be sensored for assessment of structural safety of a structure. In this paper, a selection technique for active members for safety monitoring of a high-rise building based on displacement participation factor and strain energy density of a member is investigated.

  • In this paper, the extent of use of three kinds of the existing idealized structural units, namely the idealized beam-column unit, the idealized unstiffened plate unit and the idealized stiffened plate unit, is expanded to deal with the excessive tension-deformation effects, in which a simplified mechanical model for the stress-strain relation of steel members under tensile load is suggested. The 1/3-scale hull model for a leander class frigate under sagging moment tested by Dow is analyzed, and it is shown that the excessive tension-de-formation is a significant factor affecting the progressive collapse behavior, particularly in the post-collapse range.

  • This study deals with behavior characteristics of laminated composite folded structures according to ratio of folded length based on a higher-order shear deformation theory. Well-known mixed finite element method using Lagrangian and Hermite shape interpolation functions is a little complex and have some difficulties applying to a triangular element. However, a higher-order shear deformation theory using only Lagrangian shape interpolation functions avoids those problems. In this paper, a drilling degree of freedom is appended for more accurate analysis and computational simplicity of folded plates. There are ten degrees of freedom per node, and four nodes per element. Journal on folded plates for effects of length variations is not expressed. Many results in this study are carried out according to ratio of folded length. The rational design is possible through analyses of complex and unpredictable laminated composite folded structures.

  • Fatigue fracture of reinforced concrete structures are characterized by considerably larger strains and microcracking as compared to fracture of R.C. structures under static loading. The strain of stirrup is increased suddenly by the occuring of inclined crack and the average strain ${\epsilon}_{\omega}$ of all stirrups in a structure at maximum load increase approximately in proportion to log N. The structures critical in longitudinal reinforcement seemed to have an endurance limit of 60~70 percent of static ultimate strengths for 1,000,000 cycles. In this test, the average fatigue strength at 1,000,000 cycles for all structures tested was approximately 65 percent of the static ultimate strength.

  • Generally the connection of structural members is assumed as hinge, rigid and semi-rigid connections. The exact tangent stiffness matrix of a semi-rigid frame element is newly derived using the stability functions considering shear deformations. Also, linearized elastic- and geometric-stiffness matrices of shear deformable semi-rigid frame are newly proposed. For the exact stiffness matrix, an accurate displacement field is introduced by equilibrium equation for beam-column under the bending and the axial forces. Also, stability functions considering sway deformation and force-displacement relations with elastic rotational spring on ends are defined. In order to illustrate the accuracy of this study, various numerical examples are presented and compared with other researcher's results. Lastly, shear deformation and semi-rigid effects on buckling behaviors of structure are parametrically investigated.

  • Trusses are found in many common structures such as bridges and buildings. The truss is a fundamental design element in engineering structures and it is important for an engineer to apply the truss design to engineering structures by understanding the mechanics of truss element. In an experimental course, the experiment selves as an example of the usefulness of the Wheatstone bridge in amplifying the output of a transducer. With the apparatus described here, it is possible to obtain experimental measurements of forces in a truss member which agree within errors to predictions from elementary mechanics. The apparatus is inexpensive, easy to operate, and suitable as either a classroom demonstration or student laboratory experiment. This device is a small table-top experiment. The conventional strain measuring device is costly and complicated - it is not simple to understand its structure. Hence, strain gage and the A/D converter are assembled to come up with a load and a strain measuring device. The device was tested for measuring the strain in a loaded specimen and the results were compared to those predicted by theory of mechanics.

  • The internal residual stresses within the multilayered structure with sharp interface induced by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the materials of adjacent layers often provide the source of failure such as delamination of interfaces etc. Recent development of the multilayered structure with functionally graded interface would be the solution to prevent this kind of failure. However a systematic thermo-mechanical analysis is needed for the customized structural design of multilayered structure. In this study, theoretical model for the thermo-mechanical analysis is developed for multilayered structures of the $Al-SiC_p$ functionally graded composite for electronic packaging. The evolution of curvature and internal stresses in response to temperature variations is presented for the different combinations of geometry. The resultant analytical solutions are used for the optimal design of the multilayered structures with functionally graded interface as well as with sharp interface.

  • A monitoring system for the subway structures using prestrained FBG sensors fixed with partially stripped fibers was developed. The sensor packages had pre-strain controllable fixtures. Tensile and compressive strain of the structure could be measured without slip. The FBG sensor system was applied to the concrete lining structure in Taegu subway. Near the structure, the narrow tunnel construction, for the electric power cables and telecommunication cables, started. We wanted to measure the deformations of the subway structures due to the construction by the FBG sensor. The applied sensors had the gauge length of 1 meter to overcome the inhomogeneity of the concrete material with enough length. In order to fix tightly to the structure, the partially stripped parts of the sensor glued to the package and slip phenomenon between fiber and acrylate jacket was prevented. Prestrain of the sensor was imposed by controlling the two fixed points with bolts and nuts in order to measure compressive strain as well as tensile strain. The behavior of subway lining structure could be monitored very well.

  • A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear stress distribution in beams of framed tube structures with multiple internal tubes. The structures arc analysed using a continuum approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a tube beam that accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The numerical analysis of shear stress is based on the mathematical analogy in conjunction with the elastic theory By simplifying assumptions regarding the form of strain distributions in external and internal tubes, the shear stress distributions are expressed in terms of a series of lineal functions of the second moments of area of the structures and the corresponding geometric and material properties, as well as the applied loads. Previous studies for axial stresses and shear lag phenomenon are further developed lot the numerical analysis of shear stresses in the tubes. The simplicity and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through the solutions of throe numerical examples.

  • Recently, securing a vast land in the land region becomes more difficult and efforts to seek its alternation in the sea area have been increased. As a consequence, the coastal region has been faced to extensive beach erosion problems. In planning offshore structures such as artificial islands, it is necessary to forecast the influence of the structure construction exerting on the beach erosion of the adjacent coast. In the present study, the sediment movement pattern behind offshore structure was examined through a series of three dimensional movable bed experiments, so as to develop the numerical model which forecasts morphological change including beach erosions. The experimental results reveal that the sediment movement patterns of the beach line side and the depth region are separated at a certain boundary line. In details, at the beach side including swash zone the sediment movement becomes dominant, which is governed by a relation between depth contours and incident wave directions, while at the depth region the bed load and suspended load due to the orbit motion of waves are carried by nearshore currents, and both movements are clearly separated at a specified boundary that is related to partial standing wave from the beach. It is expected that these results can be effectively used for verification of a numerical model on morphological change of the coast.
