  • The purpose of this study is to analyse teaching and learning effects of the structural-mapping used instruction and to find out the characteristics of problem solving process in permutation and combination. For this study, two classes of 11th grade students(67 students) were randomly selected from S high school in D city. One of them was assigned to the experimental group and the other to the control group, respectively. Four lectures of the structural-mapping used instruction were carried out in the experimental group and same amount of lectures of the text book oriented instruction were carried out in the control group. The research findings are as follows. First, the structural-mapping used instruction is shown to be more effective in achievement than the traditional textbook-oriented instruction. Second, the ball-box model is found out to be easier and simpler than the selection-distribution model. Third, students who used the ball-box model are properly able to use both model.

  • In general, control performance of the active control system is superior to that of the passive control devices. However, the active system require a large amount of external energy to operate the actuators. Semi-active control systems maintain the reliability of the passive control systems while taking advantage of the adjustability of the active control system. In this research, a semi-active orificed fluid damper having the capacity of about 2 tons was designed and fabricated. It is a two-stage damper with normally open solenoid valve. A series of tests was performed to grasp its performance characteristics. It was also applied to a 6-story steel structure subjected to random and seismic excitations for the confirmation of its validity on structural vibration absorption.

  • This study has explored the trajectory of the development and diffusion of the CTLs in the Korean universities by using isomorphism theory of neo-institutionalism. Neo-institutional theorists believe that organizational structure and behavior reflects the norms and values recognized in the society rather than the organization's autonomous and rational choices. Based on the isomorphism framework, the introduction and diffusion of the CTLs in the Korean universities have been led by the government. In addition, the CTLS(Korean Association of Center for Teaching & Learning) has served as a direct basis for the normative pressures. In other words, the CTLs have been securing devices for the universities to acquire external justification by the environment, and they have been able to confirm that the system was isomorphed, in particular by meeting and agreeing with the government-set university evaluation criteria. Efforts should be made to develop unique values and strategies that enable CTLs to become engines of the development of university education in response to rapid changes in the academic environment.

  • This paper suggests study of basic structure design and structural analysis for the twin car-ferries. The rules and methodology for the strength analysis of medium and small sized high speed vessels with a length of more than 50m and a length/width ratio of more than 12, such as car-ferries, have not been clarified yet. Therefore, in this paper, the members scantling were carried out using the KR Rule, and the car-ferry exclusive vessel standard were further applied to verify the structural strength the design. The scantling of the members is based on the Korea Classification standards, and the car-ferries standards were additionally applied to verify the structural strength of the design. Especially, the ultimate strength of hull girder was additionally carried out by using car-ferry exclusive vessel standard, and proposed to overcome ambiguity of design by existing standard. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data related to structural design and structural analysis of high speed twin-hull car-ferries. The present car-ferry design has a sufficient safety margin in strength point of view according to the KR rule.

  • Gila Sher believes that Tarskian definition of logical consequence is a conceptually and extensionally adequate explanation. She has tried to show this on the basis of Mostowskian conceptions of generalized quantifiers as being invariant under isomorphic structures and her own conceptions of models. In this paper I try to show that her attempt to justify the Tarskian definition is only partially successful. I admit that her conceptions of the logical as being invariant under isomorphic structures are enough to show the logical formality of logical consequence relations. But I think that since her conceptions of meanings of terms are quite inadequate for dealing with the problem of empty predicates, she fails to distinguish logically necessary truths from other kinds of truths.

  • In this paper, we confirm through surveys and interviews that it helps students in solving a problem counting the number of combinations to find a structural isomorphism between the given problem and a typical problem with the same mathematical structure. Then we suggest that a problem of distributing balls into boxes might be a good candidate for a typical problem. This approach is coherent to the viewpoint given by English(2004) that it is educationally important to see the connection and relationship between problems with different context but with similar mathematical structure.

  • A homonym could be disambiguated by anther words in the context such as nouns, predicates used with the homonym. This paper proposes a homonym disambiguation system based on statistical semantic information which is extracted from definitions in dictionary. The semantic information consists of nouns and predicates that are used with the homonym in definitions. In order to extract accurate semantic information, definitions are used with the homonym in definitions. In order to extract accurate semantic information, definitions are classified into two types. One has hyponym-hypernym relation between title word and head word (homonym) in definition. The hyponym-hypernym relation is one level semantic hierarchy and can be extended to deeper levels in order to overcome the problem of data sparseness. The other is the case that the homonym is used in the middle of definition. The system considers nouns and predicates simultaneously to disambiguate the homonym. Nine homonyms are examined in order to determine the weight of nouns and predicates which affect accrutacy of homonym disambiguation. From experiments using training corpus(definitions in dictionary), the average accruracy of homonym disamguation is 96.11% when the weight is 0.9 and 0.1 for noun and verb respectively. And another experiment to meaure the generality of the homonym disambiguation system results in the 80.73% average accuracy to 1,796 untraining sentences from Korean Information Base I and ETRI corpus.

  • The purpose of this study is to interpret how the long-term care evaluation system implements in the actual service settings with institutional isomorphism and decoupling based on new-institutional theory. This study conducted in-depth interview with employees engaged in 7 long term care service facilities. Directed qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. As a result, unlike the intention of the long-term care evaluation system to improve the efficiency of the organization by market competition, it found that organizations forcibly adapted a evaluation system to rely on government's resources and it results in isomorphism phenomena which is similar between organizations. This results confirmed that the evaluation system has implemented in the direction of enhancing the government's role to standardize and institutionalize the long-term care service rather than improving the efficiency of the organization by market competition. This study also partially found the phenomenon of decoupling between organizational formal structure accompanied by isomorphism and real behaviors. These results suggest that it is required to improve government's evaluation indicators on the issue of inefficiency caused by dual structure of organizations. In addition, this study proposes that government's evaluation index which is reflected the characteristics of care service is necessary for operating.

  • Twin-hulls frequently incur structural damage at connecting members between the hull and deck induced by pitching motions during voyages. so, reasonable reinforcement is necessary around vulnerable spots such as corner knuckle, the chine bottom and inner hull. Since guidelines for structural design are not clear, engineers often respond by reinforcing plate thickness, changing stiffener sizes and reducing frame spacing, etc. These members constitute about 85 % of the longitudinal dimensions of the ship, so it is necessary to locally reinforce certain points to minimize weight stress, and also solve construction cost problems while securing the freeboard margin. Therefore, we developed a new program by analyzing the structural design procedures for the twin car-ferries based on Korean Register of Shipping (KR) High Speed Craft Rules, identifying items that need to be added. In order to ensure the reliability of buckling estimations for procedures and design programs, we conducted a comparative study with other standards and confirmed that differences were minimal.
