The blueberry farming requires the soil condition of well-drainage, pH of 4.5 to 5.2, and high in organic matters for stable growth and development. Most of soil type of cultivated land in Korea, however, belongs to alkaline soils with low organic matter content and poor drainage. Therefore, the blueberry farmers use peat moss heavily to improve the soil condition, but the guideline on the effective and economic ratio of peat moss is not established yet. This study was performed to determine the cost effective peat moss ratio for amending soils, and to investigate the feasibility of using sawdust and coco peat as soil amendments. Peat moss, coco peat and sawdust are mixed with soil at the ratio of 0, 12.5, 50 and 100% (v/v). Among 3 organic materials with various mixture ratios, the pH of soil was the lowest in 100% peat moss and sawdust mixtures (pH 3.67 and pH 3.73, respectively), followed by pH 5.30 at 50% peat moss. The soil organic matter content are directly proportional to the mixture ratios in all three organic materials and the same trend was observed in the variation of content of exchangeable potassium in the coco peat treatments. On the contrary, the content of available phosphate, exchangeable calcium and magnesium decreased with increasing the ratio of organic materials. The nitrogen content in the leaves decreased as increasing the ratio of peat moss and coco peat in soil, but not of sawdust. The content of phosphate decreased but potassium increased as the ratio of sawdust and coco peat increased. There was no clear difference in the contents of magnesium and calcium among 3 organic materials. The plant height, stem diameter and dry weight of blueberry plants were the highest in 50 % peat moss, followed by 12.5% peat moss and 12.5% coco peat. The plants in 100% peat moss showed very poor growth. It can be concluded that peatmoss, when applied and managed appropriately, will be a good material for improving soil condition as well as securing desirable growth for blueberry. Upon coupling economic aspect, the optimum mixing ratio of peatmoss for blueberry farming is approximately 25-50%.
Farmers directly spread the livestock manure compost on their arable land as an organic fertilizer. However, there are some difficult problems to solve. first, we are unsure of whether the livestock manure compost can meet the nutritional demand of plant. Second, application of the current powered livestock manure compost to crop land is very difficult work due to heavy weight of compost and its powdered shape. For this reason, this study was carried out to develope high quality pelletized livestock manure compost. In pelletizing process with composted manure, the optimal water content for pelletizing was around 30$\sim$40%. When rice bran was mixed with 5% as a bonding agent on volume basis, the pelletizing effect was remarkably improved. On a dry matter basis, the contents of N and P of manure compost were 1.31%, and 0.58%, respectively. After pelletizing, the contents of compost pelleted were 1.37% and 0.54%, respectively. The same parameters of pelletized compost made by screw type Instrument were 1.37% and 0.53%, respectively. The other hand, N and P content of pelletized compost made by pellet mill type instrument were 1.06% and 0.18%, respectively.
This research was conducted to determine the effect of interruption layer for capillary rise on the sand based growing media when growing Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) on soil reclamation and saline water irrigation. Growing media profile consists of three layers as top soil of 30 cm, 20 cm of the interruption layer for capillary rise and 10 cm of reclaimed paddy soil. Growing media profile was packed in 30 cm diameter column pots. The top soil was a mixture of sand dredged up from Lake Bhunam Tae Ahn, Korea and peat at the ratio of 95:5 by volume. Bottom part of column was covered with plastic net and the pots were soaked into 5 cm depth saline water reservoir with salinity $3-5\;dS\;m^{-1}$. Kentucky bluegrass was established by sod and irrigated using $2\;dS\;m^{-1}$ saline water ($5.7\;mm\;day^{-1}$) in 3 days interval. The results showed that the largest accumulation of salt in the spring with electrical conductivity in saturated extract (ECe) of $5.4\;dS\;m^{-1}$ and sodium absorption ratio (SAR) 34.0 in growing media without the interruption layer for capillary rise and ECe of $4.6\;dS\;m^{-1}$ and SAR 8.24 at growing media using gravel as the interruption layer for capillary rise material. The interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel and coarse sand reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the growing media. Visual quality of Kentucky bluegrass was higher in growing media with the interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel than no interruption layer by 8.3 compared to 7.9 in rates. The interruption layer for capillary rise of gravel and coarse sand enhanced the visual quality by 4.1 and 4.0%, root length by 50 and 38%, and root dry weight by 35 and 17% of Kentucky bluegrass, and reduced the accumulation of Na by 16% and 25%, ECe by 7% and 13% in the growing media.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of cultivation period and rockwool block size on the growth and early yield of paprika transplants grown in a closed transplant production system. Paprika seeds were sown and germinated in three different size of rockwool blocks ($45{\times}40{\times}35$, $70{\times}70{\times}60$, $100{\times}100{\times}65mm$) and cultivated in a closed transplant production system for 23, 30, and 37 days after sowing. Paprika transplants were cultivated using $100{\times}100{\times}65mm$ rockwool blocks in a greenhouse following a conventional and typical production method for comparing with the growth of paprika transplants grown in a closed transplant production system. Also, we transplanted paprika transplants grown for 23, 30, and 37 days in a closed transplant production system and greenhouse to rockwool slabs and investigated fresh weight of fruits and yield 125 days after sowing. The growth of paprika transplants grown in $70{\times}70{\times}60mm$ rockwool blocks in a closed transplant production system was highest, and the quality of paprika transplant grown in a closed transplant production system was better than in a greenhouse. Rockwool block size and cultivation period in a closed transplant production system did not affect fresh weight of fruits, however, yield was largest when paprika transplants were cultivated using $70{\times}70{\times}60$ and $100{\times}100{\times}65mm$ rockwool blocks for 23 days in a closed transplant production system. These results suggest that decreasing rockwool block size and cultivation period can be strategically used to enhance transplant quality and yield of paprika, as paprika transplants were cultivated in a closed transplant production system.

In this study, we have investigated the quality characteristics of Tteokgukdduk, a traditional Korean rice cake, containing different amounts of mugwort powder (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 w/w %). We observed that the moisture content in Tteokgukdduk containing mugwort powder ranged at 41.79 to 42.50% was not significant when compared with Tteokgukdduk that is devoid of mugwort powder. We also noted that the Hunter color L value decreased in proportion to the added mugwort powder. Further, the weight of Tteokgukdduk was found to be increased with increasing levels of added mugwort powder. However, the volume of Tteokgukdduk did not varied significantly at the different mugwort powder concentrations (P>0.05). We also observed that the hardness of uncooked Tteokgukdduk containing 3% mugwort powder showed the lowest value among Tteokgukdduk containing mugwort powder. However, it did not varied significantly at the different mugwort powder concentrations (P>0.05). In cooked Tteokgukdduk, however, we found that the nature and quality of springiness and gumminess increased with corresponding increase in the amount of added mugwort powder. Further, with regard to the sensory evaluation, the intensity (of both color and flavor) of Tteokgukdduk was found to be increased with proportionate increase in the amount of added mugwort powder. The results of this study suggest that the acceptability qualities such as color, flavor, taste, texture, and overall acceptability were of the highest order for Tteokgukdduk containing 3% mugwort powder.

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a pre-planting fertilizers with various $NH_4{^+}:NO_3{^-}$ ratios in a coir dust:peatmoss:perlite (3.5:3.5:3.0, v/v/v) medium on the growth of hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Nokkwang) plug seedling. Nitrogen levels were fixed to $300mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and the $NH_4{^+}:NO_3{^-}$ ratios were varied to 0:100, 27:73, 50:50, 73:27, and 100:0. The 50-cell trays were filled with treatment media containing pre-plant fertilizers, then seeds were sown. After seeds were germinated, the trays were moved to greenhouse and seedlings were feed with 13-2-13 and 20-9-20 fertilizers, alternatively. The changes in pH and EC were measured every week and soil solution for nutrient concentrations were analyzed in week 0, 3, and 7. The measurements of seedling growths as well as analysis of tissue nutrient contents were also conducted in week 7. The varied $NH_4{^+}:NO_3{^-}$ ratios did not influence on the pHs of root media after incorporation of pre-planting fertilizers, but the ECs were heightened as proportion of $NH_4{^+}$ to $NO_3{^-}$ were elevated. During the raising of seedlings, the pHs rose over time in the treatments of 0:100 and 27:73 ($NH_4{^+}:NO_3{^-}$). The concentrations of all macro-elements in root media decreased gradually as seedlings grew in all treatments. The seedling growths 7 weeks after seed sowing were the highest in the treatments of 27:73 and 50:50 ($NH_4{^+}:NO_3{^-}$) and those became worse in the treatments of higher $NH_4{^+}$ ratios than 73%. In terms of inorganic element contents based on the dry weight of above ground tissue, the treatment of 0:100 showed the lowest content of Ca, Mg, Na, Cu, Mn, and Zn. Based on the results, it is desired that $NH_4{^+}$ ratio in pre-planting fertilization is maintained to be 50% or less for the raising of hot pepper plug seedlings.
This study examined an automated irrigation technique by a frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensor for scheduling irrigation for tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. 'Starbuck F1') cultivation aimed at avoiding effluent from an open hydroponic system with coir substrate containing different ratios of chip-to-dust (v/v) content. Specifically, the objectives were to undertake preliminary measurements of irrigation volumes, leachate volume, volumetric water content and electrical conductivity (EC) in the substrate, plant growth, fruit yield, and water use efficiency resulting from variation in chip content as an initial experiment. Commercial coir substrates containing different percentages of chips and dust (0 and 100%, 30 and 70%, 50 and 50%, or 70 and 30%), two-story coir substrates with different percentages of chips in the lower layer and dust in the upper layer (15 and 85%, 25 and 75%, or 35 and 65%), or rockwool slabs were used. The results showed that a negligible or no leachate was found for all treatments when plants were grown under a technique for scheduling non-drainage irrigation using a frequency domain reflectometry (FDR) sensor. Daily irrigation volume was affected by chip content in both commercial and two-story slabs. The highest plant growth, marketable fruit weight, and water-use efficiency were observed in the plants grown in the commercial coir slab containing 0% chips and 100% dust, indicating that the FDR sensor-auto-mated irrigation may be more useful for tomato cultivation in coir substrate containing 0% chips and 100% dust using water efficiently and minimizing or avoiding leachate and thus increasing yield and reducing pollution. Detailed experiment is necessary to closely focus on determining appropriate irrigation volume at each of irrigation as well as duration of each individual irrigation cycle depending on different physical properties of substrates using an automated irrigation system operated by the FDR sensor.

For wide application of perilla leaf, which has various healthy functions and can be easily cultured across Korea, the physicochemical and sensory properties of pan bread made with various amounts of squeezed perilla leaf juice (SPLJ) were analyzed. When dough characteristics were analyzed by using farinograph, consistency and dough development time were not significantly different between the control and bread dough made with various amounts of SPLJ, whereas dough stability time increased with increasing SPLJ amount. Expansion rate of dough decreased with increasing SPLJ amount. The volume, specific volume, and baking loss rate of pan bread made with various SPLJ amounts decreased with increasing SPLJ amount. Pan bread crumb colors became thickened and greenish with increasing SPLJ amount. For physical properties of pan bread made with various SPLJ amounts, springiness and cohesiveness decreased with increasing SPLJ amount, whereas brittleness, chewiness, and hardness increased with increasing SPLJ amount. In the sensory strength analysis, pore uniformity and soft texture decreased with increasing SPLJ amount, whereas crumb color (dark greenish), perilla leaf odor, perilla leaf taste, and chewing texture increased with increasing SPLJ amount. In the overall acceptance analysis, 1.5% SPLJ was the most preferred with a score of 7.10. However, statistical differences between 1.5% and 1.0% SPLJ were not detected at P<0.05. In the partial least squares analysis, consumers liked bread with a green crumb color, perilla leaf odor, perilla leaf taste, and soft and chewing texture. In conclusion, physicochemical properties of pan bread made with SPLJ were less desirable than those of the control; however, consumer acceptance of pan bread made with 1.5% SPLJ was shown the highest. Therefore, methods for increasing physicochemical properties of pan bread made with SPLJ need to be developed for wide application of perilla leaf.
Hydrocarbon gases generated from the gasification of waste could be converted into $CO_2$ and $H_2$ using reforming catalysts and then $CO_2$ was selectively adsorbed and removed to obtain pure hydrogen. To optimize adsorption efficiency for $CO_2$ removal, $Na_2CO_3$ was supported on nanoporous alumina and the efficiency was compared with commercial alumina(Degussa). Nanoporous adsorbents formed more uniform pores and larger surface area compared to adsorbents using commercial alumina. The increase of $Na_2CO_3$ loading improved adsorption of $CO_2$. Finally, the highest adsorption capacity per unit mass of $Na_2CO_3$ could be achieved when the loading of $Na_2CO_3$ reached up to 20wt%. When the content of $Na_2CO_3$ increased above 20 wt%, it aggregated on the surface, and the pore volume was decreased. Used adsorbents could be recycled by the thermal treatment.
