  • Operational reliability of the single-use turbo engine for guided weapons must be guaranteed even after long-term storage. Rolling element bearings have a great influence on the operational reliability of the turbo engine, however changes in micro dimensions of bearings by an oxide layers on rolling elements and raceways may cause failures after long-term storage. In this study, changes in dimensions of bearings were measured and roughness of rolling elements was used for estimating the storage life. Storage life estimation was performed via two kinds of methods, Weibayes method and random sample generation method. The results of two methods were compared and their characteristics were analyzed. This study will contribute to establish an efficient maintenance schedule for the single-use turbo engine.

  • The aerosol optical thickness data retrieved by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) of Terra & Aqua and Meteorological Imager (MI) of Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) are analyzed and compared with the measurement data of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) in Northeast Asia. As the result, the aerosol optical thickness retrieved by MODIS and MI were well agreed at ocean region but quite different at cloud edge and barren surface. The reason was that MODIS aerosol optical thickness was retrieved using the visible and infrared channels but MI was retrieved with the visible channel only. Consequentially, the thin cloud be misinterpreted as aerosol by MI and the difference between MODIS and MI aerosol optical thicknesses could be occurred with Normal Distribution Vegetation Index (NDVI) and land surface property. Therefore, the accuracies of clear/cloud region and surface reflectivity are required in order to improve the aerosol optical thickness algorithm by MI.

  • This study presented the effects of the assumed mass-size relationship for snow on the simulated surface precipitation by using cloud microphysics parameterizations in Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The selected cloud microphysics parameterizations are WRF Double-Moment 6-class (WDM6) and WRF Single-Moment 6-class (WSM6) in the WRF model. We replaced the mass-size relationship for snow in WDM6 and WSM6 with Thompson's mass-size relationship retrieved from measurement data. The sensitivity of the modified WDM6 and WSM6 was tested for the idealized 2-dimensional squall line and winter precipitation system over the Korean peninsula, respectively. The modified WDM6 and WSM6 resulted in the increase of graupel/rain mixing ratios and the decrease of snow mixing ratio in the low atmosphere. The changes of hydrometeor mixing ratio and surface precipitation could be due to the collision-coalescence process between raindrops and snow and the graupel melting process.

  • Draba ussuriensis Pohle is reported from Mt. Baekdu in this paper as a new member of Korean flora. D. ussuriensis is a white-flowered perennial herb and similar to Draba mongolica Turczaninow. However, D. ussuriensis differs from Draba mongolica Turczaninow in a number of characters. The stems and pedicels of D. mongolica are covered by dense trichomes, while those of D. ussuriensis are glabrous or glabrescent. D. ussuriensis has fewer cauline leaves compared to D. mongolica. The Korean name of D. ussuriensis Pohle stems from the specific epithet of its scientific name. In addition, D. mongolica is a new name, replacing the previously misidentified names of D. glabella Pursh, D. daurica DC., D. incana L., and D. nipponica Makino in several different studies. We corrected the name based on a comparative morphological study of specimens collected from Mt. Baekdu and Gwanmobong and related species. As a result, Korean Draba consists of three species: two white-flowered species and one yellow-flowered D. nemorosa L.

  • The Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission(TRMM) Satellite was launched in November 1997, carving into orbit the first space-borne Precipitation Radar(PR). The main objective of the TRMM is to obtain and study multi-year science data sets of tropical and subtropical rainfall measurements. In the present investigation, the characteristics of heavy rainfall cases over Korea in 1998 and 1999 are analyzed using the TRMM/PR dat3. We compare the rainrate measured from TRMM/PR with the accumulated rainfall data for 10 minutes tv Automatic Weather System(AWS). Especially, horizontal cross-section of rainrate with height and longitude in the precipitating clouds are investigated. As a result of the comparison with GMS-5 IR1, the TRMM/PR data delineate well the rain type( i.e. convective, stratiform cloud and others), height of storm top and instantaneous rainrate in the precipitating clouds. The vertical structure with height and horizontal cross-section of rainrate along the longitude show the orographic effect on the rainfall. TRMM/PR instrument measures the rainrate below 6 ㎜/hr more than AWS rainguages and inclined to underestimate the rainrate than rainguages for the whole area.

  • MODIS (Moderate Resolution Image Spectrometer) is a core satellite sensor boarded on Terra and Aqua satellite of NASA Earth Observing System since 1999 and 2001, respectively. MODIS LAI, FPAR, and GPP provide useful means to monitor plant phonology and material cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, LAI, FPAR, and GPP in Korea were evaluated and errors associated with cloud contamination on MODIS pixels were eliminated for years $2001\sim2003$. Three-year means of cloud-corrected annual GPP were 1836, 1369, and 1460g C $m^{-2}y^{-1}$ for evergreen needleleaf forest, deciduous broadleaf forest, and mixed forest, respectively. The cloud-originated errors were 8.5%, 13.1%, and 8.4% for FPAR, LAI, and GPP, respectively. Summertime errors from June to September explained by 78% of the annual accumulative errors in GPP. This study indicates that cloud-originated errors should be mitigated for practical use of MODIS vegetation products to monitor seasonal and annual changes in plant phonology and vegetation production in Korea.

  • Cloud detection means determining the presence or absence of clouds in a pixel in a satellite image, and acts as an important factor affecting the utility and accuracy of the satellite image. In this study, among the satellites of various advanced organizations that provide cloud detection data, we intend to perform quantitative and qualitative comparative analysis on the difference between the cloud detection data of GK-2A/AMI, Terra/MODIS, and Suomi-NPP/VIIRS. As a result of quantitative comparison, the Proportion Correct (PC) index values in January were 74.16% for GK-2A & MODIS, 75.39% for GK-2A & VIIRS, and 87.35% for GK-2A & MODIS in April, and GK-2A & VIIRS showed that 87.71% of clouds were detected in April compared to January without much difference by satellite. As for the qualitative comparison results, when compared with RGB images, it was confirmed that the results corresponding to April rather than January detected clouds better than the previous quantitative results. However, if thin clouds or snow cover exist, each satellite were some differences in the cloud detection results.

  • Lambertian cloud model (Lambertian Cloud Model) is the simplified cloud model which is used to effectively retrieve the vertical ozone distribution of the atmosphere where the clouds exist. By using the Lambertian cloud model, the optical characteristics of clouds required for radiative transfer simulation are parametrized by Optical Centroid Cloud Pressure (OCCP) and Effective Cloud Fraction (ECF), and the accuracy of each parameter greatly affects the radiation simulation accuracy. However, it is very difficult to generalize the vertical ozone error due to the OCCP error because it varies depending on the radiation environment and algorithm setting. In addition, it is also difficult to analyze the effect of OCCP error because it is mixed with other errors that occur in the vertical ozone calculation process. This study analyzed the ozone retrieval error due to OCCP error using two methods. First, we simulated the impact of OCCP error on ozone retrieval based on Optimal Estimation. Using LIDORT radiation model, the radiation error due to the OCCP error is calculated. In order to convert the radiation error to the ozone calculation error, the radiation error is assigned to the conversion equation of the optimal estimation method. The results show that when the OCCP error occurs by 100 hPa, the total ozone is overestimated by 2.7%. Second, a case analysis is carried out to find the ozone retrieval error due to OCCP error. For the case analysis, the ozone retrieval error is simulated assuming OCCP error and compared with the ozone error in the case of PROFOZ 2005-2006, an OMI ozone profile product. In order to define the ozone error in the case, we assumed an ideal assumption. Considering albedo, and the horizontal change of ozone for satisfying the assumption, the 49 cases are selected. As a result, 27 out of 49 cases(about 55%)showed a correlation of 0.5 or more. This result show that the error of OCCP has a significant influence on the accuracy of ozone profile calculation.
