  • Objectives: To provide basic data for oral health policy by identifying the differences in oral health behaviors and conditions among middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s and relating these to their health-related quality of life, and to identify factors affecting health-related quality of life. Methods: In this study, secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. Data were gathered from 8,127 participants, of which 2,353 were middle-aged (40-59 years old). Covariance analysis was performed using a complex sample general linear model to investigate the changes in the subjects' health-related quality of life (EQ-5D) according to their general characteristics, oral health behaviors, and oral health status. Results: Oral health behavior was not significantly related to health-related quality of life. In contrast, a higher oral health status (chewing function) was associated with better health-related quality of life. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study suggested a close relationship between oral health status (chewing function) and health-related quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the importance of oral health in improving the health-related quality of life of middle-aged people in their 40s and 50s, as well as in informing oral health policies and preventive measures for individuals and communities.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of public preventive dental healthcare services named the "Dental Preventive Health Services for Children" (DPHSC) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in Korean children. Of the total 20,802 beneficiaries in 2018, 110 10-year-old elementary school students were randomly selected and were requested to complete a survey using the Korean version of Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) questionnaire before and after participating in DPHSC. Overall, 107 participants completed the pre- and post-survey. COHIP scores and clinical results such as numbers of decayed and missing teeth, malocclusion, and oral hygiene status from dental examination were statistically analyzed and the reliability and the validity of the responses were verified. There was a significant clinical increase in mean overall COHIP scores following DPHSC (p < 0.001, effect size 1.05). Children with decayed and missing teeth demonstrated poor OHRQoL. In conclusion, DPHSC can improve the OHRQoL of 10-year-old children.

Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 243 workers in Jeonbuk May 7 to June 10, 2014. Except incomplete answers, 230 data were analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(sex, age, career, marital status, abd family), oral health recognition characteristics(oral health attention, subjective oral health status, and oral health concern), oral health knowledge, oral health behavior, and oral health related quality of life. The instrument was 14 questions od OHIP-14 including functional restriction(2 questions), physical pain(2 questions), psychological discomfort(2 questions), physical ability decease(2 questions), psychological function decease(2 questions), social activity decrease (2 questions), and social discomfort(2 questions). Cronbach's alpha was 0.949 in this study and it was reliable. Results: Oral health interests showed that 57.8% of the workers had concern for oral health interests and 50.4% perceived that their subjective oral health was moderate status. 55.6% of the workers answered that their oral health status was very worried. Women had more knowledge about the oral health. Those who were in fifties tended to have more knowledge of oral health than the other age groups. Those who had more concern for oral health included female workers, married workers, and workers above 21 years. The concern for oral health made the workers keep good oral health. Higher score of OHIP-14 means good oral health. Conclusions: Good oral health-related quality of life is proportional to continuous management of oral health and subjective oral health status. It is necessary to develop the tailored oral health education program for the workers.
