Joints are planar tensile opening-mode fractures whose relative motion, as the fracture propagates, is perpendicular to bedding plane and occur in a systematic manner to form a joint set. This paper discusses the mechanical control of joint propagation, the relationship between join spacing and layer thickness, the join saturation, the frequency distribution of join spacing, the joint density, the cross joint, and the development mechanism of joint from a lot of recent joint studies in sedimentary rocks.

The three methods of analysis (i) REV(representative elemental volume), (ii) non-REV and (iii) joint network analysis are introduced in this paper to analyze the groundwater flow in jointed rock mass and the inflow into underground excavations. The results from those methods are compared one another to reveal their characteristics by varying the number of joints and the diameter of the opening. The pre-processor, the so-called sequential analysis, is introduced to predict the equivalent hydraulic conductivity of a jointed rock mass having a number of intersecting joints. Using the finite element mesh, joint map and sequential analysis, the equivalent hydraulic conductivities are calculated for all 445 elements. The hydraulic inhomogeneity and the determination of the representative properties of jointed rock masses are discussed. In the REV analysis where the entire rock mass is homogenized through the representative properties, the inflow is increased regularly and consistently by increasing the joint density, the opening size and the conductivity contrast value. Though the non-REV analysis showed irregular variation of the inflow due to the local inhomogeneity allowed to individual elements, the inflow approached the REV results as the characteristic length increases. The joint network analysis showed the most sensitive reaction to the joint density, the opening size and the presence of the network crossing the opening. The reliability of the network analysis depends on the geometric data of individual joints. In view of the limited field data on joint geometry and possible uncertainty the REV and non-REV methods are considered more practical and rational than the joint network analysis.
Types of slope failure related to cut slope stability are interpreted through case analyses, and also factors affecting structurally controlled instability investigated, which are developed by geologic structures along a national road No. 25 across the Cheongwon and Boeun-Guns, Chungbuk. Engineering properties such as orientation, persistence, roughness and uniaxial compressive strength of joints are analyzed by square-inventory method in three areas with well-preserved outcrops. The study area is located in Ogcheon folded bet, and are composed of quartz-schist and quartzite in the Midongsan Formation and phyllite in the Ungyori Formation. Flexural beds by folding, schistosity and cleavage besides joints are developed due to slight metamorphism. Various types of joints developed by folding are formed such as strike-parallel, strike-perpendicular, wedge and wrench joint sets by both initially regional and later superposed folding. Factors of slope instability are created by crossing the orientations of joint, cleavage, bedding and slope one another. In the case that the orientation of a slope is coincident with one of beds, factors causing large-scale failure including plane failure are increased greatly. Also in the region that orientations of the slope and bed are crossed each other at high angle, only local and minor failures are shown in the slope.
The effects of joint density and size distribution on the hydrogeologic characteristics of jointed rock masses are addressed through numerical experiments based on the 2-D DFN (discrete fracture network) fluid flow analysis. Using two joint sets, a total of 51 2-D joint network system were generated with various joint density and size distribution. Twelve fluid flow directions were chosen every $30^{\circ}$ starting at $0^{\circ}$, and total of 612 $20m{\times}20m$ DFN blocks were prepared to calculate the directional block conductivity. Also, the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity for each generated joint network system were determined. The directional block conductivity and chance for the equivalent continuum behavior of the 2-D DFN system were found to increase with the increase of joint density or size distribution. However, the anisotropy of block hydraulic conductivity increases with the increase of density discrepancy between the joint sets, and the chance for the equivalent continuum behavior were found to decrease. The smaller the intersection angle of the two joint sets, the more the equivalent continuum behavior were affected by the change of joint density and size distribution. Even though the intersection angle is small enough that it is difficult to have equivalent continuum behavior, the chance for anisotropic equivalent continuum behavior increases as joint density or size distribution increases.
In performing seismic analysis of tunnels, it is a common practice to ignore the rock joints and to assume that the rock mass surrounding the tunnel is continuous. The applicability of this assumption has not yet been validated in detail. This study performs a series of pseudo-static discrete element analyses to evaluate the effect of rock joint on the seismic response of tunnels. The parameters considered are joint intersection location, joint spacing, joint stiffness, joint dip, and interface stiffness. The results show that the joint stiffness has the most critical influence on the tunnel response. The tunnel response increases with the spacing, resulting in localized concentration of moment and shear stress. The response of the tunnel is the lowest for joints dipping at $45^{\circ}$. This is because large shear stresses result in rotation of the principal planes by $45^{\circ}$. In summary, the weathered and smooth, vertical or horizontal, and widely spaced joint set will significantly increase the tunnel response under seismic loading. The tunnel linings are shown to be most susceptible to damage due to induced shear stress, and therefore should be checked in the seismic design.
A program code was developed to calculate block hydraulic conductivity of the 2-D DFN(discrete fracture network) system based on equivalent pipe network, and implemented to examine the effect of joint orientation distribution on the hydraulic characteristics of fractured rock masses through numerical experiments. A rock block of size $32m{\times}32m$ was used to generate the DFN systems using two joint sets with fixed input parameters of joint frequency and gamma distributed joint size, and various normal distributed joint trend. DFN blocks of size $20m{\times}20m$ were selected from center of the $32m{\times}32m$ blocks to avoid boundary effect. Twelve fluid flow directions were chosen every $30^{\circ}$ starting at $0^{\circ}$. The directional block conductivity including the theoretical block conductivity, principal conductivity tensor and average block conductivity were estimated for generated 180 2-D DFN blocks. The effect of joint orientation distribution on block hydraulic conductivity and chance for the equivalent continuum behavior of the 2-D DFN system were found to increase with the decrease of mean intersection angle of the two joint sets. The effect of variability of joint orientation on block hydraulic conductivity could not be ignored for the DFN having low intersection angle between two joint sets.
This study focuses on the phenomenon that the blast damaged zone developed on rock slope surfaces can be affected by joint characteristics rather than by explosive power when the pre-splitting is applied to excavate a jointed rock slope. The characteristics of rock joints on a slope were investigated and categorized them into 4 cases. Also an image processing system has been used for comparing the distribution pattern of rock blocks. From this investigation, it was found that the rock blocks bigger than 2,000 mm occupied 42% in the case of single joint set and it showed the well efficiency of pre-splitting blast. In cases of 2~3 parallel joint sets and 2~3 intersecting joint sets are developed on rock surfaces, the rock blocks in the range of 1,000~2,000 mm occupied 43.6% and 35.8%, respectively, and it showed that the efficiency of pre-splitting was decreased. When more than 3 joint sets are randomly developed, however, the rock blocks in the range of 250~500 mm occupied 35% and there was no block bigger than 1,000 mm. This denotes that the blasting with pre-splitting was not effective. The numerical analysis using PFC2D showed that the blast damaged zone in a rock mass could be directly influenced by the pre-splitting. It is, therefore, required to investigate the discontinuity pattern on rock surfaces in advance, when the pre-splitting method is applied to excavate jointed rock slopes and to apply a flexible blating design with a consideration of the joint characteristics.
Juwangsan area($107.4km^2$) has been designated as the twelfth National Park in 1976, because it has magnificent aspect and seasonally spectacular landscapes. Juwang valley($9,177.5m^2$) has been designated as Noted Scenery No. 11 in 2003, because it has the same topographical landscape as rock domes, rock cliffs, caves, waterfalls and plunge pools. The most spectacular landscapes are exhibited in the densely welded zone of the Juwangsan Tuff. The rock cliffs generated from vertical joints in the densely welded zone, in which there are the same many rock cliffs as Geupsudae, Haksodae, Sinseondae, Mangwoldae, Giam and Byeongpungbawi, three caves such as Juwanggul, Mujanggul and Yeonhwagul in the cliff. The cliffs and caves are landscapes that were generated from vertical joints in the densely welded zone, and the rock domes and waterfalls are landscapes of erosional vertical joint planes in the zone. The vertical joints are columnar joints formed during cooling of the Juwangsan Tuff. Therefore the topographical features cause the cooling columnar joints that are vertically intersected in the densely welded zone of the Juwangsan Tuff.
We assigned points on surface of standard roughness profile by 0.1mm along the length and measured coordinates of points. Then, the lengths of profile were measured with different scales using modified divider method. The fractal dimensions and intercepts of slopes were determined by plotting the length vs scale in log-log scale. The fractal dimensions as well as intercepts of slopes show well correlation with joint roughness coefficients(JRC). However, multiplication of the kactal dimension by intercept show better correlation with IRC and we derived a new equation to estimate JRC from fractal dimension and intercept. The crossover length in which we can determine the correct fractal dimension was between 0.3-3.2mm. We measured joint roughness of 26 natural joints and calculated JRC using the equation suggested by Tse and Cruden(1979) and new equation derived by us. IRC values calculated by both equations are almost the same, indicating new equation is effective in measuring IRC.
