  • In this paper, for both transmission and reception with single antenna system of satellite communication, dual-frequency antennas which operate simultaneously at 12.5 GHz and at 14.25 GHz are designed, constructed and measured. Also by using dual feeding structure, the problems of single-fed dual-frequency antenna such as the separation of transmitting and receiving signals and single polarization, are solved. Microstrip patch as a radiation element of dual-fed dual-frequency antenna has width and length which are the resonance lengths of the corresponding frequencies for transmission and reception, respectively. The effects of the feed line on the other frequency feeding are minimized with the optimal matching scheme for the feed lines. For solving the space problems of dual-fed two-dimensional array antennas, microstrip-line and coaxial probe feedings are used for each frequency and a two-dimensional $2\times2$ array antenna was designed and measured their characteristics. The experimental results show that errors of resonance frequencies are less than 1.44%, the return losses are less than -21 dB and the isolations between two feeding ports are less than -21 dB. The characteristics of radiation patterns of dual frequency microstrip antenna are measured and evaluated. The directivities, sidelobe levels and cross polarizations are also measured and compared with the simulations. The results show some errors due to the misalignment of coaxial probe feeding.

  • The design is presented for a SATCOM antenna capable of simultaneous multi-band (X/Ku/Ka-Band) communications without replacement of feed horns or change of other parts in the application as a ground satellite terminal for large data transfer. The antenna is the offset configuration and consists of a dual-band(X/Ka-band) feed horn, a single-band(Ku-band) feed horn, a frequency selective surface(FSS) sub-reflector and a parabolic main-reflector. The antenna has a main reflector defining a prime focus and a frequency selective surface sub-reflector defining an image focus. A dual-band feed and a single-band feed are provided at each of the prime focus and image focus. The antenna is designed using 3D EM simulator and the gains measured in X/Ku/Ka-band of the complete antenna assembly is more than 31.6dBi, 36.8dBi, 40.8dBi, and the cross polarization is 21.7dB, 26.6dB, 25.2dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, the novel shipboard Active Phased Array Antenna(APAA) system for maritime mobile satellite communications is introduced. The antenna uses novel technologies like wide range hybrid tracking, single antenna elements with both of Rx and Tx, asymmetrical array structure, interference isolation between Rx and Tx, and error correction method from frequency scan effect. The antenna has single aperture for both of Rx and Tx with 32 $\times$ 4 two-dimensional array. The antenna has two beams. Its frequencies are 7.25 ~ 7.75 GHz for Rx and 7.9 ~ 8.4 GHz for Tx. The antenna gains are 35.4 dBi for Rx and 35.7 dBi for Tx, those are 54 % of efficiency. The electrically steering ranges are $\pm$35$^{\circ}$ of elevation direction and $\pm$4$^{\circ}$ of azimuth direction. The mechanical control ranges at hybrid tracking capability are continuous 360$^{\circ}$ of azimuth direction and $\pm$10$^{\circ}$ of elevation direction. The antenna has 2.2$^{\circ}$ of 3 dB beamwidth, -14 dB of sidelobe level, and 21 dB of cross-pol suppression. The antenna performance was measured by near field measurement set. Its system performance was tested on the ship motion simulator and with the satellite transponder simulator. The test result showed that its tracking error was within -3 dB from its peak gain under motion condition. The antenna system was tested by real modulated Direct Broadcasting Satellite(DBS) signals to check its communication processing function.

  • Gregorian offset dual-shaped reflector antennas have been widely used in the satellite communication systems for their high gain and low sidelobe characteristics. However, in this paper, it is designed as the CATR(Compact Antenna Test Range) reflector system, and its near-field characteristics are investigated. The CATR facility needs to provide an uniform plane wave with the minimum amplitude and phase ripple and the low cross polarization to the test region. Therefore, the reflector near-field patterns are calculated and presented with the variations of the aperture power distribution, the feed horn pattern, and the distance from the aperture to the test zone. Also, the offset dual-shaped reflector is fabricated at 30 GHz, and its near-field patterns are measured. The measured results are in good agreement with the calculated results. From theses results, we confirm that the designed offset dual-shaped reflector can be used as the reflector system for the compact antenna test range.

  • In this paper, the sequentially rotated array(SRA) antenna with 256 elements applicable for satellite broadcasting reception was designed by arraying this triple(4+8+4 element) SRA antenna as a sub-array antenna. The structure of a triple SRA antenna is a combination of three coaxial shells composed with 4 elements of inner shell and 8 elements of middle shell and 4 elements of outer shell. In accordance with the optimum design rules for realizing a high gain antenna, the sequential array factors(M, P) of inner shell and outer shell have been chosen M=4 and P=1 and that of middle shell has been chosen M=8 and P=1. The results of the simulation and the measurement for the proposed triple(4+8+4 element) SRA antenna and the SRA antenna with 256 elements show good characteristics on the integration, bandwidth of the axial ratio and the cross-polarization, the gain respectively.

  • In this paper, we study the characteristics of dual band microstip antenna with modified inset feeder and a single slot. The modified inset feeder consists of the vertical inset feeder placed in x direction and the horizontal one in y direction for shortening the total length of inset feeder. The optimun feeding position for good impedance matching at two resonant frequencies can be easily found by adjusting the horizontal inset distance. And Various frequency ratios can be simply obtained by the parameters of slot. The measurements for fabricated antenna prototypes are carried out for validation. The measured results show a tunable frequency ratio from 1.25 to 1.88 with the variation of slot parameters. It is worthwhile to point out that the radiation patterns are similar at both bands. and below -20.0 dB of cross polarization level at the E plane.

  • In this paper, we study the characteristics of dual band microstrip antenna with the wedge-shaped radiation patch added the slot using air substrate. Wedge-shaped patch antenna with air substrate is avoided the large probe reactance associated with a thick substrate owing to the use of short probe and good impedance matching over a wide frequency range can be obtained. Slot on the antenna radiator varies the reactance component according to the employed frequency and affect the resonance freaqency of the antenna, therefore the antenna can resonate at the dual band(cellular and PCS band). The slot length and position have an effect on the bandwidth and input impedance of the antenna are optimized by simulation. From the experiment results for the fabricated antenna, -10 dB of $S_{11}$ is content with the allocated bandwidth of Cellular and PCS system and - 15 dB of cross polarization level. From the results of this paper, it has been confirmed that the proposed antenna can be used as the base station antenna fur Cellular and PCS band.

  • In this paper, the linear active phased array antenna system operated in Ku DBS band was designed and experimented. The antenna system was composed of sixteen radiating active channels and Wilkinson power combiners with 16-channel inputs, a stabilizing DC bias and phase control board. Electrical beams of the antenna system can be formed by controling the phase-states of 3-bit digital phase shifter inside each active channel by virtue of the phase control board. The amplitude and phase deviations measured between active channels were less than ${\pm}0.8dB$ and ${\pm}15^{\circ}$, respectively, and the noise figure of each active channel was measured less than 1.2 dB in the operating band. The measured performances of the overall antenna system showed the antenna gain of more than 23.07 dBi and the sidelobe level of less than -11.17 dBc, and the bore-sight cross-polarization level of less than -12.75 dBc in the operating band. Also, by phase-controlling active channels, the beam scan patterns at $10^{\circ},\;20^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}$ were measured, and the losses caused by the corresponding beam scanning were 1.1 dB, 2.5 dB and 3.6 dB from the measurements, respectively.

  • Measurement and analysis results of the extracted radiation-patterns from the field-experiments which were conducted to acquire the generic technology for calibration and validation of the satellite SAR system(Synthetic Aperture Radar) are presented in this study. Prototype of active transponder is adjustable within maximum 63.1 dBsm of RCS (Radar Cross Section) and includes the receiving-function with external receiver. To increase an accuracy of these field experiments, we repetitively measured satellite SAR systems of the same operating mode(i.e., COSMO-SkyMed No. 2 & 3, hh-pol., strip-map himage mode, 3 m resolution). Then, the reliability of experimental results was cross-checked through analysis of the RCS of active transponder on SAR image. The property of azimuth radiation patterns of satellite SAR system extracted from them has $0.352^{\circ}$ of HPBW(half-power beamwidth), $0.691^{\circ}$ of FNBW(first-null beamwidth), and 11.17 dB of PSLR(peak to side lobe ratio), respectively.

  • As the threat of natural disasters such as droughts, floods, forest fires, and landslides increases due to climate change, social demand for high-resolution soil moisture retrieval, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), is also increasing. However, the domestic environment has a high proportion of mountainous topography, making it challenging to retrieve soil moisture from SAR data. This study evaluated the usability of Sentinel-1 SAR, which is applied with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique, to retrieve soil moisture. It was confirmed that the backscattering coefficient obtained from Sentinel-1 significantly correlated with soil moisture behavior, and the possibility of stand-alone use to correct vegetation effects without using auxiliary data observed from other satellites or observatories. However, there was a large difference in the characteristics of each site and topographic group. In particular, when the model learned on the mountain and at flat land cross-applied, the soil moisture could not be properly simulated. In addition, when the number of learning points was increased to solve this problem, the soil moisture retrieval model was smoothed. As a result, the overall correlation coefficient of all sites improved, but errors at individual sites gradually increased. Therefore, systematic research must be conducted in order to widely apply high-resolution SAR soil moisture data. It is expected that it can be effectively used in various fields if the scope of learning sites and application targets are specifically limited.
