  • Rain-attenuation and cross-polarization models for millimeter-wave propagation are discussed and compared with measurements in the various countries. Rain-rate conversion model which converted <$\tau$minutes rain-rate data to one minute rain-rate data, which is applicable for domestic environments are also discussed. Using the converted domestic rain-rate data, probability distributions of rain attenuation and cross-polarization discrimination are computed for various models, and the results are compared with each other.

  • In this paper, the simplified design methodology for rotation of polarization plane using a square waveguide is proposed. In order to optimize the characteristics of $180^{\circ}$ polarizer operating from 14.3GHz to 14.8GHz in Ku-band, the modified mode matching method and piecewise power tower interpolation are applied to the polarizer design. The optimized results show that the frequency bandwidth in VSWR<2 has covered 500MHz in the Ku-band and phase difference between two orthogonal modes $TE_{10}$and $TE_{01}$ is $180^{\circ}{\pm}1^{\circ}$ in the range of 14.3GHz~14.8GHz. The cross polarization loss has obtained below 40dB and the insertion loss has 0.1dB in the passband. Therefore, the proposed polarizer is suitable for practical Ku-band system requiring the low VSWR and compact size.

  • To effectively remove chaff echoes, which are often misidentified as precipitation echoes on weather radars, this study examines the relationship between the radar reflectivity and each of dual polarimetric parameters. The dual polarimetric parameters are collected only for the echo areas identified as chaff echoes on the NIMR X-band dual polarization radar. Overall, the polarimetric parameters (i.e., reflectivity, differential reflectivity, cross correlation coefficient, standard deviation of differential reflectivity and specific differential phase) for chaff echoes have a wider range of values than those for precipitation echoes and the chaff filaments tend to be horizontally oriented to radar beams. There appears to be a considerable overlap in the cross correlation coefficient range of chaff and precipitation echoes since some precipitation echoes have cross correlation coefficient lower than 0.8. Therefore, although the cross correlation coefficient is known to be a good variable in identifying and separating chaff echoes from precipitation echoes, it is suggested that additional care should be taken when using the cross correlation coefficient solely in removing chaff echoes.

  • This paper presents a dual-band, dual-polarized microstrip patch antenna with simple dual-probe feed. The inter-port isolation and cross-polarization are greatly improved by designing feed structure with annular gap between patch and feed-probe. Measured results show that the antenna's inter-port isolation and cross-polarization in each -10 dB return loss bandwidth of $1.84\;GHz\~l.93\;GHz$ and $2.62\;GHz\~2.81\;GHz$ are greater than 21 dB, greater than 22.2 dB and greater than 27 dB, greater than 19 dB, respectively. The antenna gain is about 6.9 dBi in both frequency bands.

  • In this paper, we propose 1×2 array antenna with dual linear polarization characteristics for mmWave band operation. The proposed antenna is designed two microstirp feeding structure and FR-4 substrate, which is thickness 0.4 mm, and the dielectric constant is 4.3. The size of 1×2 array antenna is 2.33 mm×2.33 mm, and total size of array antenna is 13.0 mm×6.90 mm. From the fabrication and measurement results, bandwidths of 1.13 GHz (28.52~29.65 GHz) for port 1 and 1.08 GHz (28.45~29.53 GHz) for port 2 were obtained based on the impedance bandwidth. Cross polarization ratios are obtained from 7.68 dBi to 16.90 dBi in case of vertical polarization, and from 7.46 dBi to 15.97 dBi in case of horizontal polarization for input port 1, respectively. Also, cross polarization ratios are obtained from 8.59 dBi to 13.72 dBi in case of vertical polarization and from 9.03 dB to 14.0 dB in case of horizontal polarization for input port 2, respectively.

  • In this paper, we analyzed a two-branch polarization diversity at a mobile station in NLOS environment when a base station transmits a circularly polarized wave. In order to calculate the correlation coefficient considering the XPD(cross polarization discrimination) between the received signals for the two diversity branches, a simple theoretical model of circular polarization diversity is adopted. From the analysis results, it can be seen that the XPD of circularly polarized wave is less than vertically polarized wave about 6~7 dB in measurement results. And also, it is clearly seen that the correlation coefficient of circular polarization diversity evaluated by the XPD is less than that of vertical polarization diversity.

  • Design and optimization of a broadband meander-line twist reflector was performed for X-band application. Based on the equivalent transmission line model, the polarization twist performance was evaluated. Genetic analysis, particles swarm, and hybrid swarm optimizations were employed to obtain the optimized geometrical parameters. The optimized design exhibits low cross-polarization level below - 25 dB between 8.45 and 11.38 GHz. The polarization twist loss was below 0.2 dB. Comparison between computed and simulated results was also discussed.

  • In this paper, the dual parabolic cylindrical reflector systems are analyzed as the reflector system for the CATR(Compact Antenna Test Range) facility. The near-field at the test zone of the CATR is calculated by using the PO(Physical Optics) approximation. The CATR has to provide an uniform plane wave with the minimum amplitude and phase ripple and the low cross polarization. Therefore, in this paper, the near-field pattern are calculated, and the ripple and taper of the field and the cross polarization are investigated with the position of the subreflector and the test region. It is confirmed that the analysis results can be used for the design of the CATR with the dual parabolic cylindrical reflector.

  • In this paper, a circular microstrip patch antenna for switchable polarization is presented. For the switchable polarization, pairs of tuning stubs and two PIN diodes are utilized. By independently setting the PIN diodes on or off, the antenna produces either linear polarization or circular polarization. From the results, the -10 dB impedance bandwidths of 57.0 MHz($2.4\%$) and 50.0 MHz($2.1\%$) when operated in the linear polarization, and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of $1.3\%$ with minimum of 0.2 and 0.9 dB in the circular polarization have been observed.
