  • This study investigated how the unique educational contexts in the Republic of Korea (RK) impacted two science teachers' teaching practices in a public middle school and what the science teaching experience means to them. In particular, we explored how the middle school science teachers decide pedagogical approaches to use in their teaching based on classroom climate, students' attitude toward learning science, school curriculum and classroom culture. Using a phenomenological research approach, we analyzed classroom observation data and interview data to interpret the teachers' science teaching experience. Results of the study showed that the teachers' practice was dominantly affected by two external factors. First, the teachers' teaching practice was affected by the amount of science content knowledge they need to cover within a given class time. Second, the teachers' teaching practice was affected by students' attitudes toward science learning and their science preparedness in private tutoring centers. Implications of the study results are discussed in the paper.

  • In spite of the importance of cognitive conflict in conceptual change, there has been little research on the characteristics of cognitive conflict in students enrolled at vocational high schools. The purpose of this study was to expose these students' cognitive conflict types and investigate characteristics of cognitive conflict according to the type of cognitive conflict. This paper examined how vocational students' motivational beliefs and epistemological beliefs affect the process of cognitive conflict when students are confronted with an anomalous situation related to the action and reaction concept. Results indicated that many vocational students experienced low levels of cognitive conflict and remained passive during the explanation of anomalous phenomenon or easily desisted any attempt to resolve the conflict situation because of their epistemological belief to depend on the external absolute knowledge of teachers, an extrinsic motivation to choose easier tasks, or reliance on the teachers' reputations. Therefore, Instructors need to recognize these characteristics in order to facilitate vocational students' conceptual change when presenting cognitive conflict tasks.

  • This study was conducted in order to identify the extent to which Health Belief Model (HBM) constructs explain the likelihood of taking preventive behaviors for AIDS among the young adolescents in Korea. HBM was applied as the theoretical framework for developing questionnaire items in this study. The survey instrument included all of the constructs of Health Belief Model, namely, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefit, perceived barriers, cue to actions for preventive behaviors concerning AIDS. Additionally, demographic characteristics of the respondents, their sexual experiences, and AIDS Knowledge Test were included in the study. Each of HBM constructs were developed with a 5-point Likert type scale from l(never agree) to 5 (absolutely agree). The survey was conducted with a total of 247 military men in a city on September 18, 1996, using self-reported questionnaire. The results of the study were summarized as follows: 1. Because the subjects for this study were military soldiers, their demographic characteristics were limited to all men, young age, and ummarried. Educational status was evenly distributed between high school graduates and university students. 2. On the average, the respondents started their first sexual relationship at 18 years old and 82.6% of them did not use condom when having their first sexual experience. Thirty-one percent of the subjects had sexual contact with prostitutes and the average number of sexual contact with prostitutes was 5 times during the past 2 years. 3. The results of AIDS Knowledge Test scores demonstrated that the respondents had a high level of knowledge about AIDS. However, some misconceptions about transmission of AIDS through casual contact were still prevailed. Sixty-six percent of the respondents expressed that people infected with HIV should be isolated from the society in order to protect the general public. 4. All the respondents expressed that they had heard about AIDS before. TV was found to be the source which provided information on AIDS most frequently. 5. Among fundamental constructs of Health Belief Model, scores of perceived benefit of taking preventive action against AIDS marked the highest score, while scores of perceived susceptibility were the lowest. As a result of Multiple Stepwise Regression analysis, 13 variable groups were found to predict the preventive action by 25%. Among them, only perceived benefit variables was the most significant factor to explain preventive behaviors by 17%.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to describe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related knowledge, health beliefs, anxiety levels, and preventive behaviors among nursing students and to identify factors that influence their preventive behaviors. Methods: A descriptive survey was conducted, targeting a total of 192 nursing students from March 4, 2021 to March 25, 2021. A structured questionnaire was used to identify nursing students' knowledge, health beliefs, anxiety, and preventive health behavior regarding COVID-19. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, a t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: The nursing students' knowledge level was 15.08±1.70 out of 5, and their health belief level was 3.72±0.32 out of 5. These scores were considered high. Their anxiety score was 3.29±3.84 and considered very low. COVID-19 preventive behaviors had a positive correlation with benefits (r=.29, p<.001) and cues to action (r=.28, p<.001). Factors influencing COVID-19 preventive behaviors by multiple regression were identified as health beliefs and living arrangements (F=8.95, p<.001, Adjusted R2=14.3%). Conclusion: The findings suggest that health beliefs and living arrangements could be important factors affecting preventive health behavior in nursing college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study highlights the need for appropriate education and widespread awareness campaigns aimed at potential health care professionals about the prevention of new emerging diseases.

  • Despite evidence that early childhood teachers play a critical role in guiding children through their child assessment, most beginning teachers in the survival stage face the greatest difficulties in this area. Using the intentional and purposeful tools of action research, this collaborative action study supports a beginning teacher in reflecting upon her perceptions of the 'child assessment' of young children and devising and evaluating good guidance practices. During the course of the study, the participating teacher became engaged in more reflective teaching which prompted her to perceive the "child assessment" of the children from different perspectives. As her understanding of the importance of making her curriculum and classroom climate more engaging and meaningful deepened and she reconceptualized her notion of child assessment, the teacher witnessed positive changes in her students' behaviors which, in turn, increased her sense of efficacy. These very positive, empowering results are strong recommendation for using collaborative action research especially in the novice years of teaching for it provides the teacher with a life-long transformative tool for professional development.

  • This study was conducted to identify pain intensity and factors affecting pain intensity in patients with advanced cancer. Data were collected between June 1 and September 30, 2016 using a questionnaire. The sample size was 221 patients with advanced cancer who were admitted to the oncology department or who visited the outpatient of the general hospital. Data were evaluated by descriptive and Pearson's correlation analyses, one way ANOVA, t-tests and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The mean scores of pain intensity of cancer patients were 4.23 (${\pm}1.68$) based on the average daily pain intensity. Factors influencing pain intensity were illness perception (${\beta}=.27$, p<.001), pain opioid analgesics beliefs (${\beta}=.24$, p<.001), education (middle school, ${\beta}=.24$, p=.001), economic status (${\geq_-}400$, ${\beta}=.20$, p=.001), gender (female, ${\beta}=.14$, p=.017), pain management education (${\beta}=-.14$ p=.020) and diagnosis (Pancreatic Ca, ${\beta}=.14$, p=.020). It explained 28%. Overall, the results of this study revealed that illness perception and pain opioid analgesics beliefs were important factors influencing pain intensity, but that the most important influencing factor was illness perception. Accordingly, it is necessary to develop pain management strategies that include not only pain management knowledge and pain opioid analgesics beliefs, but also illness perception.

  • The purpose of this research is to find factors that affect high school science teachers' class compositions. In this research, we developed the class composing factor analysis framework and we observed teachers' class to figure out the class composing factors. The results from this research were as follows: First, the class composing factor was classified with 'positive motive factor' and 'negative motive factor'. It is the positive motive factor that teachers' voluntary motives operate to teacher for class compositions. It is the negative motive factor that outer demands operate to teacher for class compositions. Second, both positive and negative motive factors were shown in all the steps, which included preparing a class, progressing a class, and after a class. Also, according to the circumstances, each factor changed. Minimizing and overcoming negative motive factors will lead to positive interaction between the teacher and students. It will also increase a teachers' achievements in class and maximize the effectiveness of class. Therefore, it is expected that this will be a great help for teachers to enhance their teaching professionalism.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the identified groups depend on the relationship of smartphone overdependence and adolescents' perception of smartphone overdependence itself. The study also explored gender positions in classified groups and the relationship between irrational perception of smartphone and positive emotion while smartphone usage. The participants to the study were 2,033 adolescents, aged between 10 and 19 from a smartphone overdependence survey of the National Information Society Agency. As a result of the qui-square analysis and MANOVA, four groups were classified depend on perception of smartphone overdependence and related smartphone overdependence behaviors. Second, gender did not show any differences in groups. Third, adolescents with lower perception in smartphone overdependence showed lower perception of smartphone usage compared to other adolescents in three groups. Fourth, adolescents with constructive perception in smartphone overdependence reported positive emotions. The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to understand adolescents' smartphone overdependence and look together with the irrational perception of smartphone.
