  • This study has investigated how five peer status groups that were selected by a social skills scale exhibit different peer relationship problems by means of averages, standard deviations, and profile analysis. Social skills scale developed by Yi-Hwan Ahn(2007) and the inventory of peer relationships by Hae-Won Jung(2007) were administered to 551 fifth and sixth graders in 9 elementary schools located in Gyungnam province, and averages and standard deviations of 5 peer status groups' peer relationship problems were explored. Also in order to see if differences exist among 8 sub-scales in the inventory of peer relationships according to the peer status, an average profile of scores was represented by a graph and multivariate analysis was carried out. The main results of the study are as follows. First, statistical analysis of 551 cases included in the study showed the children were distributed into the Average group(319, 57.9%), the Popular group(111, 29.1%), the Rejected group(70, 12.9%), the Controversial group(41, 7.4%), and the Neglected group(10, 1.8%), in that order. Second, as a result of comparing average scores for each measure in the inventory of peer relationships according to the peer status group, a significant difference was found to exist according to a child's peer status. The Popular group showed the lowest scores in Too Controlling, Hard to be Supportive, the Cold, and Non-Assertive among the 5 peer status groups whereas the Rejected group showed the highest scores in Social Avoidant, Non-Assertive, and Too Responsible. Third, marked differences according to the peer status group were found. The Popular group showed the lowest profile among the peer status groups whereas the Rejected group had the highest profile. In the sub-scales of the peer relationship problems, the Rejected children showed a significantly higher level of Socially Avoidant and Non-Assertiveness in comparison to the Popular children, which implies the Popular children group has lower levels of peer relationship problems than the other groups.

  • The purpose of this study empirically verified the effects which family cohesion has on the emotional and behavioral problems(internal and external problems) in middle school students, sampling 375 of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades middle school students. Also, this study aims to confirm the mediating effect of relationship with teachers and relationship with peers considering that the social relationship in middle school students of adolescence expands to teachers and peers and is a important developmental stage. The results of this study are as follows. Family cohesion is shown to have direct effects on internal and external problems in middle school students. Also, relationship with teachers is shown to have direct effects on internal and external problems. However, relationship with peers is shown to have direct effects on internal problems while it is shown to have insignificant results statistically on external problems.

  • In recent years, bullied students and rogue groups in teenagers make many serious social problems. In this paper we propose a novel approach that more objectively analyzes peer relationships among students. As the data for objective analysis, we use communication history records that are collected from various communication tools such as telephones, e-mails, and messengers. We use the simple intuition that communication history records implicitly contain peer relationship information. And, we adopt data mining techniques for the more systematic analysis. The proposed peer relationship analysis consists of the following steps. First, we formally define the notion of degree of familiarity between friends, and present mathematical equations that compute the degree based on communication history records. In the proposed method, we use the intuition that the degree of familiarity from student x to student y becomes higher as x makes the more communications with y. Second, by using the degree of familiarity between students, we find out the students who are potentially bullied. This procedure is based on the assumption that a bullied student may have a very small number of history records from other students to him. Third, we adopt the clustering technique, one of the most representative data mining techniques, to find out meaningful student groups by using the degree of familiarity. To use the clustering technique, we formally define the notion of similarity between friends based on the degree of familiarity, and perform clustering using the notion. Last, to show the practicality of the proposed method, we have implemented the method and interpreted the meaning of the experimental results. Overall, we believe that our research result provides an effective framework that analyzes peer relationships more objectively and more systematically.

  • The aim of this study is to verify whether mediated effect on classmates and teachers occurs while child abuse and neglect have an effect on community sense. For the purpose of this study, among the Korean Children and Youth Panel, data of freshmen from elementary school are gathered through a follow-up survey for 7 years(2010-2017) and data of about 2,001 children are investigated. Also, The research issue -'will there be mediated effect in the relationship between child abuse and neglect and community sense'- is verified by the structural method and presented as follows. First, child abuse and neglect have no significant effect on community sense directly. Second, child abuse and neglect(β=-.663) are found to have a negative influence meaningfully on relationship with classmates and teachers. Third, relationships with classmates and teachers(β=.664) are shown to have a significant positive effect on community sense. Fourth, When child abuse and neglect have an influence on community sense, mediated effect on classmates and teachers(β=-.440) has a meaningful negative effect, Based on these findings, the recommendations for implementing youth welfare are described.

  • In this study, we examined the longitudinal change of multicultural acceptability, peer relationship, and teacher relationship using latent growth curve modeling. This study used data from the second, third, and fourth waves of the middle school student cohort (N=2,178) of the Korean Children-Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). The dependent variable was multicultural acceptability. The independent variables were peer relationship and teacher relationship. The major longitudinal findings of this study are as follows: First, peer relationships, teacher relationships and multicultural acceptability increased with time. Second, peer relationship showed a significant effect on the multicultural acceptability over time. Finally, the teacher relationship showed a significant effect on the multicultural acceptability over time. These results show differentiation with previous cross-sectional studies of multicultural acceptability. Furthermore, it is expected that this study will provide educational implications for the cultivation of multicultural acceptability.

  • The purpose of this study is to reveal and confirm the factor structure inherent in the Korean inventory of peer relationships(KIPR; Sang-Hwang Hong, et al., 2009) in order to strengthen the interpretive usefulness of the test. For this purpose, the inventory was administered to the total of 616 children in the fourth through sixth grades in three elementary schools located in Gyungnam area, and the data from 578 of them were analyzed. The results of the study can be summarized as follows. First, as a result of the exploratory factor analysis of 3-factor and 4-factor models, the 3-factor model was found to be more appropriate. In the 3-factor model, the factor 1 is named "Lack of Self-Confidence and Social Withdrawal" as it consists of such circumplex scale items as Non-Assertiveness (C5), Social Avoidance (C4), the Cold (C3), and Too Submissive (C6). The factor 2 is named "Too Aggressive and Controlling" and consists of items Too Controlling (C1) and Hard to be Supportive (C2). The factor 3 is named "Too Caring" and consists of items Too Responsible (C7), Over Involvement (C8), and Too Submissive (C6). Second, as a result of the confirmatory factor analysis, the 3-factor model, in comparison to the 4-factor model, was found to better reflect the collected data(RMSEA=.054), its goodness of fit was not satisfactory but within the acceptable range(CFI=.786), and its power of simplicity and clarity was also adequate(PCFI=.733). In the current study, through the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of scores from the Korean inventory of peer relationships circumplex scales, scales within the peer relationship circumplex model that are near each other and are highly correlated were confirmed to be grouped together as same factors. I believe the main merit of the study lies in the above result having provided the necessary foundation for forming the superordinate and representative scale that encompasses the eight circumplex scales, which enhances the test's interpretive usefulness.
