  • Objectives : We questioned whether the tongue diagnosis is effective for judging seriousness of cerebrovascular accidents. This study is about the relationship between tongue diagnosis and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS) in acute stroke patients. Methods : 738 subjects were recruited from the patients admitted to the department of internal medicine at Kyung-Hee University oriental medical center, Kyung-Hee University East-West Neo Medical Center, Kyungwon university Incheon oriental medical center, Kyungwon university Songpa oriental medical center and DongGuk university Ilsan oriental medical center from April 2007 to August 2008. We looked at the tongue as in three dimensions of tongue color, tongue fur color and tongue body. And, we calculated NIHSS means according to the subtypes of three dimensions. Results : 1. In the Tongue color, from the most commom to least common colors were pale red, red, pale, bluish purple, and ect. The NIHSS mean score of red is significantly higher than pale and pale red. 2. In the Tongue fur color, white fur was the most common, and then yellow fur, etc. There is no significant difference among three subtypes in the NIHSS mean score. 3. In the Tongue body, etc. is the most common, followed by teeth-marked tongue, enlarged tongue, blood patchy tongue, and mirror tongue. The NIHSS mean score of teeth-marked tongue is significantly lower than blood patchy tongue and mirror tongue. Conclusions : The tongue color and the tongue body are useful indexes for judging seriousness of cerebrovascular accidents presented by NIHSS. But in our study, the tongue fur color was not useful. Further study is necessary on the tongue fur.

  • Research on lexicon and language provides insights into the interests, values and practices of a community where individuals use the language. The International Classroom Lexicon Project, in which ten countries participated, identified own country's mathematics teaching and learning lexicons by investigating mathematics classroom instruction from teachers' perspectives in a speaking-oriented community. This study, as an extension of the International Classroom Lexicon Project research, investigated pedagogical lexicons used in 「Mathematics and Education」 journals specialized for Korean professional mathematics teachers published by the Korean Society of Teachers of Mathematics. Using the text mining approach, we also traced how these pedegogical lexicons have changed quantitatively over the past 10 years with a diachronic perspective. As a results, several novel terms were found in the writing-oriented community, which were not identified in the speaking-oriented community. In addition, we could discover some pedagogical lexicons have increased statistically significantly and some lexicons appeared(increased) rapidly across years. This implies the teacher community's values and zeitgeist by reflecting these changes in the sociocultural, incidental and social changing (i.e., periodical change) contexts. This study has value as a first step in understanding zeitgeist for mathematics education in Korean mathematics teacher community according to changes of times over the past 10 years. Also, this study contributes to the methodological insights: the text mining technique provides a methodological contribution to researching changes in interests, values and zeitgeist according to these changes in the times.

  • The conventional school building design, which locates the hallway on the north side of the classroom, has proven to be very ineffective for indoor light control. Especially, glares and dark spots on the work plane as well as nonuniform illuminance on the chalkboard were causing undesirable visual effects for the students. The present study has investigated various problems with the classroom in the existing elementary and(junior) high school buildings from the point of indoor visual environment, and made some suggesions for possible solutions.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the roles of parents in science learning at the Everyday Science Classroom (ESC). Discourses of 20 parent-child dyads were analyzed to identify the roles of the parents and their significance. Data were also gathered through questionnaires that were made to survey the perception of parents and students of the Everyday Science Classroom (ESC) in Gwanak-gu. The results showed that parents played the role of Guide as well as Learner. Parents as the Guide showed roles of Process guide, Cognitive facilitator, Participation inducer, and Authoritative manager. Parents helped their children to accomplish the experiment successfully (34.5%) and offered cognitive scaffolds (21.3%) and affective scaffolds (8.7%) for children to reach a level of understanding that they could not reach by themselves. However, parents who helped their own children without considering their needs repressed children's autonomous learning (1.6%). The roles of parents as the Learner were categorized into Active learner (16.1%), Collaborative fellow learner (15.1%), and Authoritative leading learner (2.7%). The multiple roles of parents can influence the children's understanding of science in both positive and negative ways. This study can provide basic information on the roles of parents and their interaction with their children. Reflection on positive aspects of parent participation in program development will promote the understanding of science in both parents and children.

  • In this study, we suggest the standards for future mathematics classroom from environment, teachers, and students aspects. Future mathematics classroom should have the three environmental standards that perform responsible roles and appropriate functions of physical resources and classroom space. In the teacher standards' domain, we presented as a total of eight kinds. Concretely, we proposed the four standards for improvement of mathematical teacher's instructional expertise and the four standards for improvement of abilities of learners. The students standards consist of 4 domain a such as 3 standards of mathematical investigation and problem solving, 3 standards of cooperation and communication, 1 standard of utilization and operation of mathematical technologies and learning support systems, 2 standard of digital ethics and citizenship. Also, we developed the mathematical convergence instruction model and reported the results of its application after the lessons conducted in the classroom equipped with advanced environmental and technologies. We presented the convergence instruction model and scenarios focused on thoughts and actions of teachers and students in the future mathematics classroom.

  • Here we report the genome sequence of Veillonella atypica strain KHUD-V1 isolated from subgingival dental plaque of Korean chronic periodontitis patients. Unlike other V. atypica strains, KHUD-V1 carries two prophage regions and prophage remnants, as well as several genes homologous to prophage-associated virulence factors, such as virulence-associated protein E, a Clp protease, and a toxin-antitoxin system. The isolate and its genome sequence obtained here will aid to understand the diversity of the genome architecture of Veillonella within an evolutionary framework and the role of prophages that contribute to the genetic diversity as well as the virulence of V. atypica.
