  • The self-directed inquiry to improve students' core scientific competency is an important teaching method. Students experience a variety of difficulties in carrying out their inquiry tasks, sometimes fail to produce the desired results, or fail to perform a meaningless inquiry. This study was conducted to identify the causes of difficulties and failures in students' self-directed scientific inquiry. The study involved 16 high school students with experience in science research at science high schools and science-focused high schools. The data collection consisted of in-depth interviews centered on semi-structured open questions. Qualitative data analysis was imputed by finding paragraphs from the interview material that might reveal the difficulties and failures experienced by participants and the reasons for them. The study found that most of the causes of failure were lack of ability, incomplete procedures, and selection of complicated tasks. A variety of cognitive biases, such as overconfidence, planning fallacy, and groupthink, were also analyzed as causes. Based on the results of the study, it is necessary to develop an educational strategy that students can be fully prepared to reduce their trials and errors in a self-directed inquiry maximally.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate student's Acquisition about the conception of the Earth Rotation between difference of their Spatial Sensibility. In this study, four students were selected out of 83 9th graders in Gwangju, Korea. The spatial sensibility test instrument was developed by the Korean Testing Center, and the test instruments of 'the movement of celestial bodies' were developed by Kim (1997). The results were as follows: Students with higher spatial sensibility understood precisely about the Earth's rotation in stereoscopic space. However, those with lower spatial sensibility failed to grasp the Earth's rotation and memorized it as fragmentary concepts. As for gender effect, male student with higher spatial sensibility explained the concepts clearly, while that with lower spatial sensibility has difficulty with the Earth's rotation in relation to the diurnal motion of celestial bodies. On the other hand, female student with higher spatial sensibility explained the concepts correctly in detail, while that with lower spatial sensibility had difficulty explaining the concepts in stereoscopic space. Therefore, students with higher spatial sensibility should be presented with problems in which they form their own solution. Those with lower spatial sensibility should be allowed to understand the phenomena intuitively. In developing teaching methods, female students should interact with the concepts in stereoscopic space directly, while male students should consider the celestial objects from various viewpoints. Then spatial sensibility in relation to the movement of celestial bodies would be expected to improve.

  • There are complex interactions between personal and contextual features in teaching in a science museum. In order to analyze two teachers' holding classes in a science museum, the CHAT (cultural historical activity theory) was used as an analysis tool in a case study. The analyses of the results revealed that both teachers had difficulties teaching in a science museum due to the contradictions among the factors of subject, rules, community, and division of labor in the activity system. Although both teachers had trouble with similar contradictions, there appeared to be different sets of internalization and externalization of such conflicts depending on the difference in the teacher's perceptions and experiences about teaching in a science museum, the passion and the motivation of the teachers. These suggested that efforts should be preceded to foster the activity system providing both emotional and social supports to teachers in order to activate teaching in a science museum. Taking a teacher training course on teaching in a science museum was also found to fail to function as mediating artifacts. The course should provide not only the experience of executing proper teaching strategies for teaching in a science museum and the feedback on their teaching, but also the guidance on how to lead to optimal expansion of the factors in the activity system.

  • This study examines the learning styles of freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering, and analyses the relationship between learning styles and academic achievement in mathematics to provide basic data for the teaching-learning methods, which are more suitable to learning styles of students. For the purpose of this research, a reliability analysis of Kolb's LSI is applied to 282 freshmen enrolled in a college of science and engineering of the medium-sized university. The outcomes of this survey are followings. Firstly, students hold higher positions in the order of converger, assimilator, accommodator, diverger among 4 learning styles. Secondly, while there is a positive corelation between abstract conceptualization[AC] and academic achievement, there is a negative corelation between concrete experience[CE] and academic achievement. Thirdly, as for academic achievement in mathematics, converger is superior to assimilator and accommodator. Finally, the correlation between learning styles and academic achievement is different by demographic characteristics. Based on these results, this study suggests the necessity for various teaching-learning strategies, which are adjusted to both academic characteristics of mathematics and learning styles. Also, the need for teaching methods, which help students to develop effectively four learning cycles, is proposed.
