  • This study investigated the change of pre-service elementary teachers' professional visions through video-based reflection on science teaching with focus on their attention and pedagogical reasoning about student learning. Specifically, we compared two reflection cycles before and after pre-service elementary teachers went through the collaborative video-based reflection process in a professional learning community. The primary data were collected from eight pre-service elementary teachers and included their science lesson plans, videotaped lessons, video-reflection papers, and transcripts from the interviews. Pre-service elementary teachers' attention was categorized in five aspects: classroom management & control, teacher's instruction, students' thinking & learning, subject knowledge, and assessment. The level of their pedagogical reasoning about student thinking and learning was determined with six levels based on the number of evidence, evidence area, and evidence type. The findings revealed that 1) individual reflection is not enough - collaborative reflection is essential to change their attention toward students learning and thinking 2) pedagogical reasoning levels increase gradually throughout the individual and collaborative video-based reflection processes. The participants not only attributed student learning solely to the characteristics of students but also connected it with their own instruction or science content knowledge and used different types of evidences as they went through two reflection cycles. Implications for using video in the teacher education program were discussed.

  • In a small-scale class, children gradually lose interests in studying and develop negative and passive attitudes in class activities due to the uniform education. Although many cooperative instruction WBI models are studied and designed, there has not been any research on cooperative instruction model appropriate for a small-scale class. In this study, instructors participate in classes, each in connection with other small-scale classes, and WWW based cooperative instruction model, WIEZ, which can affect students' learning attitude on long-term basis, was designed and embodied. Currently, WIEZ is being under experimental test in three schools at Kyung-nam where instructors design classes, and students divided into groups participate in classes in this system.

  • It is important to understand how pre-service teachers perceive e-learning because their prior-experience with e-learning will have a great impact on their teaching after the graduation. Pre-service teachers (401 students) with cyber learning experience, which is a form of e-learning, were selected in 2004 in May and June. Survey was conducted regarding the instructional experience (working hours, tasks and evaluation, satisfaction about cyber learning and its academic achievement, difficulties and suggestions) and instructional methods (instructional activities, frequencies of interaction, strategies of interaction, collaborative activities, behaviors in the group instructional activities for knowledge development). The results are pre-service teachers tent to spend similar v slightly less working hours for cyber learning, similar or slightly less satisfaction level for the instruction and the academic achievement. It was interesting that female students were more negative than males students, considering female students have been more active in online discussion traditionally. Logical presentation of contents and instructional strategies for the cyber learning were the most wanting suggestions. E-mails and BBS for reference materials were the two most used functions in the online learning. The amount and types of tasks were satisfactory. Students did not interact freely during the group activities, they reported they did not learn much through the group activity. During the group work, they consider they do their roles with responsibility while they have slightly negative responses toward other members' contribution in the group activity. Off line meeting is strongly suggested.

  • This study aims to identify the effects of instruction methods on the students' knowledge and attitudes to persue an effective instruction for information literacy. For this purpose, a copyright class as a quasi-experiment is provided to students in a high school in different ways including the teacher-centered lecture and the student-centered Jigsaw cooperative learning program. As a result, Group D (Jjgsaw method) showed the highest educational effectiveness among the four groups in terms of the knowledge of copyright. the group also showed higher instructional effectiveness compared to other groups in the practical attitude, which was one of the three types of attitude to copyright.

  • For teachers to develop new beliefs regarding science teaching and learning, they must undergo a process similar to what they are trying to provide their students. Seventy-one Korean secondary school teachers including 20 earth science teachers have participated in such process. In the four-week long summer workshop hosted by University of Iowa, science teachers were exposed to several activities and lectures wherein they experienced student-centered lessons by playing the roles of both teachers and learners. This study examined the influence of such experience on the teachers’ beliefs about science teaching and learning. Changes in teachers’ beliefs were found in seven question items on the subjects of goals of science learning, the roles of science teachers and students, and classroom practices after workshop participation; it was found that teachers’ beliefs of science learning and teaching shifted from teacher-centered to student-centered. Although this shift does not denote a complete shift from one extreme to the other, it is meaningful to note that teachers’ beliefs after attending the workshop were interpreted to be either anti- or contrary to teacher-centered. One of the possible factors for making such positive changes may have been teamwork or the teachers’ cooperative learning experience.

  • The aim of this study was to understand the components that influence the mental models of preservice elementary teachers on the astronomical phenomena of seasons of the year and lunar phases of the month. For this, participants were selected from a university of education. Data was collected from a paper-pencil test and individual interviews with the participants. The results of this study showed that the preservice teachers had apparent synthetic mental models, and that the 'Distance Theory' and 'Occlusion Theory' had the greatest effect on their mental models. Furthermore, it was found that preservice elementary teachers' initial mental models of 'astronomical phenomenon' had their origin in personal belief sets (specific theory) related to 'astronomical phenomenon'. It was on these belief sets that they interpreted their observations and cultural information with the constraints of a naive framework of physics. The structures and possible sources for overcoming these synthetic mental models were also discussed in this paper. Lastly, implications for preservice elementary teacher education were presented.

  • The most important factor for collaborative learning to be effective is the selection of tools that constitute groups. Grouping is to facilitate collaborative learning, learners form groups based on various characteristics. If a group of students fails to form properly due to the selection of the wrong tools, problems can arise where complaints from students can lead to lectures and the effects of learning. In this paper, we have implemented a group of configuration tools that considered improving learning effects and diagnosing bulling tendency. We have proposed a group composition tool that can take into consideration the learning effect and also diagnose the tendency of the bullring by constructing the group according to the teacher's preference by inputting the class preference and the student's grade through the sociometry survey. We expect that the teacher will be able to grasp the students' friendship in advance and cope with the bulling that can happen in the class, as well as the cooperative learning that can lead the class to improve the learning effect.
