  • What are the identification criteria elementary school teachers prefer? What are the characteristics of students that teachers consider when nominating them to gifted programs? Will those criteria of identification/nomination differ as to teacher experiences related to gifted education or teacher involvement in the professional development? This study aims to find the answer to these questions. For this purpose, a total of 511 elementary school teachers with a varying degree of experiences with gifted education were recruited from 23 schools in 11 school districts in Seoul. The results show that teachers generally preferred task commitment, creativity, curiosity, and domain specific talents as criteria for identifying gifted students, while perceiving achievement records, total grades, leadership, and general intelligence as less important. Teachers experienced in gifted education or having been involved in professional development perceived curiosity, task commitment, and creativity as more important than teachers without such experiences. The importance-performance analysis of identification criteria indicates that teachers reported high importance on task commitment, curiosity, and creativity, but those factors were less considered in actual nomination. On the contrary, teachers reported low importance on quick learning and achievement(total grades, subject grades), but those were highly considered in nomination. A similar pattern was found in both experienced and nonexperienced teachers although the importance-performance gap was higher for the latter. Implications for teacher nominations and professional development were discussed.

  • The objective of this paper is an implementation of analysing and predicting functions to promote self-directed learning for student's performance assessment system in programming subjects. By adapting Rubric model, the proposed functions inform a student of the assessment criteria and level to be carried out with respects to two-way specifications such as rational ability, problem solving ability and creativity. The proposed system also provides a graphical results of each ability instead of assessment result, for better understanding and analyzing himself/herself based on to the performance assessment and the result. Moreover, the proposed system contains a method to predict future achievement result with moving average technique. Therefore, an academic achievement can be precisely determined by himself/herself to estimate self-directed learning. The teacher can provide different level of educational resources such as supplement learning, problem explains and private instructor etc., in order to maximize efficiency of education.

  • Using TIMSS survey data, we analyzed whether there were any significant changes in the learning environment of middle school science classes over the last 10 years. Our study selected questions from teachers and school principals' questionnaires and divided them by category: science class, teacher professional development, and school environment. The science class components were subdivided into three categories: science learning activities, evaluation, and homework. Within teacher professional development, the sub-categories included teacher training, collaboration to improve teaching, and teacher evaluation. School environment subdivided into two aspects, these being school characteristics and school system. Our research confirmed that there has been a positive change overall in learning environments. However, most classes are teacher-conducted and also teacher-oriented; the proportion of science investigation activities has declined compared against the prior ten years. Our study show that students do not engage in a range of inquiry-related activities. The questions on tests and examinations involve mostly knowledge application and understanding, although recent methods of evaluation show improvement. As for the science teachers, they participate in many professional development programs but focus on science content, science curriculum, and pedagogy. In addition, teachers do not have many opportunities to participate in the training to integrate information technology into science, science assessment, or improving students' critical thinking or inquiry skills. The teachers are satisfied with their profession, and the shortage of science resources does not seem to affect instruction.

  • ADHD is a neuro-developmental disorder that begins in childhood, yet may continue into adulthood. Although 3 to 4 percent of adults are affected by ADHD, but only a small proportion of adults ever receive a formal diagnosis and treatment. The core symptoms of ADHD frequently lead to significant academic difficulties that often result in the students' teacher being the first to suspect the disorder. In order for school teachers to effectively deal with ADHD students in school classrooms, they need to have positive attitude toward ADHD students. This study presents a list of ADHD-related web sites which provide educational contents and support for school teachers, and provides the discussions about the current status and the roles of those web sites.

  • Although there was an introduction of the class with in mind learner's individual learning ability as a method improving problems of the class which consists of students with various kinds of levels, it was a burden to both teacher and students because of many realistic problems. In this paper, we investigate the efficiency of peer tutoring teaching method which is the one that students having a superior ability for learning become peer tutors and they teach other peer tutee under the teacher's guidance and supervision. After we apply the class-wide peer tutoring to some sophomore classes, we obtain that this teaching method affects positively the students's learning achievement and learning attitude in mathematics class. • This study investigated six teachers who used the lessons utilizing geospatial technologies including GPS and Google Earth. The lessons were designed to ask students to solve problems with the technologies rather than to teach students to just use technology and teachers to function more as a facilitator. Key findings include: (1) The teachers with background and interest in learner-centered teaching were more effective in implementing the lessons with their students while the teachers who were familiar with teacher-centered instruction often reduced learners' roles in the lesson; (2) Generally, students expressed huge interests in the lessons. Changes in attitude and participation toward lessons were more clearly observed from low achievers and passive learners; (3) Key influencing factors in adoption of lessons utilizing geospatial technologies were school culture toward innovativeness, characteristics of school administrators, learning experience of the lessons during the workshops, and support systems for lesson preparation and implementation.
