  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of curriculum design of pre-service chemistry teachers who participated in educational program for teaching in science museum. Three pre-service chemistry teachers at a college of education in Seoul participated. The educational program was composed of workshop, lesson planning and practice, and critique. After the workshop, we conducted semi-structured interviews based on pre-visit, during-visit, post-visit activities planned by the pre-service teachers. We observed and recorded their teaching practices in Gwacheon National Science Museum and following critique by their classmates. We also conducted final interviews. We used a framework for museum practice to analyze their curriculum design. The analyses of the results revealed that all planned their lessons in accordance with the National Science Curriculum, and considered geographical and psychological aspects in their pre-visit activities. They encouraged students to make joint products through small group activities, and gave students autonomy in choosing exhibits to facilitate spontaneous participation. However, they did not consider continuous aspects of pre-visit, during-visit, and post-visit activities. They did not effectively induce students to engage during-visit activities cognitively. They did not make post-visit activities connect students' experiences in science museum to personal experiences.

  • In Korea, the criteria for the requirements of a secondary school science teacher's certificate are based entirely on the subjects and/or areas as prescribed in laws for the teacher's licensure examination. However, the criteria do not account for the specific competencies or qualities that a good science teacher should possess. The objective of the research was to explore and suggest the three lists of the image of an ideal science teacher, science teacher's role and science teacher's competency that might be used to establish the criteria for science teachers' certificate and the curricular content for science teacher education in Korea. In order to achieve this objective, the study used such research methods as literature analysis, status survey in combination with on-line workshop, in-depth interview, and professional consultation. The participants in the research comprised of a group of 258 students (186 middle school students and 72 high school students) and 13 in-service science teachers (8 middle school science teachers, 5 high school science teachers) for questionnaire survey and on-line workshop, and 4 science teachers for in-depth interview. The list of the image of ideal science teacher, science teacher's role, science teacher's competency contains 44, 32, and 75 statements, respectively. Based on the results of the research, this paper suggested that the criteria for the Korean secondary school science teacher's certificate requirements be selected and organized in consideration of the teachers' competencies rather than the courses and/or subject areas. It is also implied in the paper that further research over a period of time is necessary for using the competencies for curricular contents and/or science teacher's certificate standards.

To this end, interviews were conducted with four university students in their 4th year of study at 'G' Education University in Gwangju, also their teaching plans and class implementation videos were analyzed. Interview questions were divided into the science class planning stage, the science class implementation stage, and the post-science class implementation stage, and the interview contents were transcribed and categorized after recording. The results of the study are as follows. First, in the science class planning stage, pre-service elementary teachers considered the degree of elementary students' familiarity when choosing digital teaching and learning tools to foster digital literacy. While writing the teaching plan, it was difficult to set standards related to fostering digital literacy. Second, while pre-service elementary teachers had positive experiences such as improving students' participation in classes and increasing student-specific guidance through real-time data sharing, class time was exceeded due to poor use of digital teaching and learning tools. Third, after teaching their science classes, pre-service teachers presented reflections and requirements for the class. Based on these results, the necessity of developing digital literacy for pre-service elementary teachers and the need to improve the curriculum of education university were proposed.
