  • Freudenthal has advocated the reinvention method. In that method, the pupils start with a meaningful context, not ready-made concepts, and invent informative method through which he could arrive at the formative concepts progressively. In many face the reinvention method is contrary to the traditional method. In traditional method, which was named as 'concretization method' by Freudenthal, the pupils start with ready-made concepts, and applicate this concepts to various instances through which he could arrive at the understanding progressively. Through analysis, it turns out that Korea's seventh elementary mathematics textbook is based on concretization method. In this thesis, first of all, I will reconstruct probability unit of seventh elementary textbook according to Freudenthal's reinvention method. Next, I will perform teaching experiment which is ruled by new lesson design. Lastly, I analysed the effects of teaching experiment. Through this study, I obtained the following results and suggestions. First, the reinvention method is effective on the teaching of probability concept and algorithm. Second, in comparison with current textbook strand, my strand which made probability concept go ahead and combinatorics concept let behind is not deficiency. Third, tree diagram is effective matrix which contribute to formalization of combinatorics calculation. Lastly, except for fraction, diverse representation of probability, for example percentage or informal ratio expression must be introduced in teaching process.

  • This study aimed to investigate elementary school teachers' interest in mathematics textbooks following the new change in the publication system for elementary mathematics textbooks. To achieve this, an online survey platform was used to conduct a survey of elementary school teachers in teaching grade 3-4 across the country, and the responses of 199 participants were analyzed to determine their interest in mathematics textbooks. The research results showed that elementary school teachers had high levels of interest in mathematics textbooks, particularly in informational and personal interest. Moreover, the stages at which teachers showed the highest level of interest were reinforcement interest and operational interest. Analysis of the differences in interest in mathematics textbooks based on personal variables showed significant differences depending on the teacher's experience in mathematics education training, satisfaction with mathematics textbooks, and whether they majored in mathematics education. Based on these findings, it can be inferred that elementary school teachers have a high level of informational interest in the characteristics, strengths, weaknesses, and materials related to authorized and approved mathematics textbooks, and their high level of personal interest in mathematics textbooks can have a positive effect in line with the goal of the new textbook system. Additionally, since many teachers showed a high level of interest in reinforcement interest, it is necessary to devise various ways to support teachers' creative use and reconstruction of mathematics textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends of mathematics textbooks to provide implications for future textbook research. For this purpose, 123 research papers related to mathematics textbooks, published in seven professional domestic journals during recent five years, were selected. The papers dealing with Korean mathematics textbooks were analyzed by school levels (i.e., elementary, middle, or high school), mathematics content areas, analytic methods, and implications. The results of this study showed that many studies analyzed elementary mathematics textbooks, specifically in the content strand of number and operations. The frequent analytic foci were given to content areas along with mathematical rigor or the development of alternative mathematics textbooks. In comparison with the previous research trend, there was an increasing number of studies in which detailed implications or ways of re-constructing mathematical topics were discussed on the basis of thorough analysis of textbooks. This study also included an analysis of papers comparing Korean mathematics textbooks with foreign counterparts or analyzing foreign mathematics textbooks to elicit implications for Korean mathematics textbooks in terms of reasons of the comparison, school levels, and analytic foci. This paper closes with implications for textbook research.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze mathematical tasks of Korea and the USA textbooks focused on conditions for parallelograms. In this study, structures of task, types of proof and reasoning, and levels of cognitive demand are investigated. The conclusion is as follows: First, with respect to structures of task, structures presented in the USA textbooks are more diverse. Second, with respect to types of proof and reasoning, Korea and the USA prefer IC task and DA task. And task types presented in the USA textbooks are more diverse. Third, with respect to levels of cognitive demand, in both Korea and the USA textbooks, PNC task and PWC task account most. And compared to the USA, Korea prefer algorithms. In addition, we find out implications for reconstruction of Korea textbook. It is as follows: First, with respect to structures of task and types of proof and reasoning, the diversity of composition needs to be raised. Second, with respect to levels of cognitive demand, the concentration in PNC task needs to be declined. And levels of cognitive demand on types of tasks need to be reconsidered. Third, with respect to tasks' topic and material, internal and external connectivities of mathematics need to be strengthened.

  • The revised informatics is to be compulsory for middle school students from 2018 according to 2015 revised curriculum. The concept of abstraction in informatics curriculum has common features and differences compared with general abstraction, however there is a mix of concepts in the current informatics textbook. The abstraction of computational thinking needs to connect with automation, so it is difficult to teach correct concept of abstraction with these textbooks. Therefore, this research conducted to investigate several informatics textbooks that were developed by the revised curriculum and to analyze the concept and examples of abstraction. As a result, some textbooks have that there is a mix of concepts about general abstraction and no connection with automation. This research suggests clarified abstraction and educational examples for cultivating computational thinking to improve this situation. This result will be basic recourse for the reconstruction of abstraction lesson to improving computational thinking.

  • This study aimed to analyze the learning contents related to biotechnology in life science II and general engineering based on the 2015 revised national curriculum and discuss pedagogical implications for biotechnology education. The main findings were as follows: First, while the learning topics of life science II focused on the ethical aspects related to biotechnology, the learning topics of general engineering focused on the industrial aspects of biotechnology. Second, there were types of overlapping biotechnologies in the life science II textbooks and general engineering textbooks. However, the life science II textbooks provided more scientific and professional descriptions of biotechnology principles than the general engineering textbooks. Also, the life science II textbooks provided more specific overall explanations than the general engineering textbooks. There was a lack of ethical considerations concerning biotechnology in the general engineering textbooks. These findings imply that it is necessary to reorganize biotechnology content based on each school's curriculum and student characteristics.

  • Since the educational guideline on Information and Communication Technology(ICT) was announced, almost every school has taught about ICT during the discretionary classes. Although research on the computer curriculum and comparative studies on computer textbooks have been conducted, a study on the current status of the use of computer textbooks has not been carried out yet. On the basis of such needs, this study was conducted to investigate the current status of the use of computer textbooks in elementary schools(i.e. how teachers use computer textbooks in schools, and what teachers and students think about computer textbooks), and to suggest ideas to be considered in order to improve the quality of computer textbooks. The main finding of this study is that although most teachers use computer textbooks, the frequency of use is low and teachers use the textbook by revising or complementing its content. Also, most teachers respond negatively to some aspects of computer textbooks(i.e. level-based learning, reconstructional facility, systemicity, enhancement of exploring and creative ability, induction of interest, enhancement of self-directed learning, and assignments). In contrast with this result, students respond negatively only to the vocabularies used in computer textbooks. In addition, teachers showed significantly different responses according to their age and teaching experiences, and students demonstrated significantly different responses according to their gender and the frequency of the use of computer textbooks.

  • This study investigated how the 7th national elementary school science curriculum was implemented at science classrooms. Data from surveys with 140 elementary schools, 18 science classroom observations, and in-depth interviews with teachers were used to examine the characteristics of elementary school science instruction. Based on the data, I explored (1)how science curriculum is operated in terms of objectives, contents, methods and evaluation of school science, and (2)how student-centeredness and localization themes are reflected on the reconstructed school science curriculum. It was found that the degree of the reorganization of the national curriculum at the teacher level was minimal. And most of the elementary teachers followed the directions and contents of the science textbook and teacher's guidebook regardless of their own local situations. For most teachers, restructuring science curriculum meant reordering the sequences of the contents, and adding or deleting some units or topics. I also examined why elementary teachers have difficulty in reconstructing science curriculum at the classroom level. The necessity of curriculum reconstruction at the teacher level is also discussed.
