Fabrication and Characteristics of the Fiber Device Based on Long-period Fiber Gratings at the Locations Under Applied Pressure (압력이 인가되는 지점에만 광섬유 장주기 격자가 형성되는 광섬유 소자 제작 및 특성 분석)

  • An optical fiber device is fabricated that is formed LPFGs only where pressure is applied, and the characteristics of the device are investigated. The fabricated device is composed of a 60cm-long metallic rod, with long period gratings of $720\;{\mu}m$ on the upper side and a rubber cover. In this device, gratings are only formed when pressure was applied to a spot, to which pressure was applied, and the formed gratings had the same transmission property regardless of spot, to which pressure was applied. We measured the optical transmission property of the fabricated device and found its usability as an optical fiber load sensor to measure weight.

  • Stimulated Brillouin scattering theory is described in an optical fiber. Frequency change with an optical heterodyne method is analyzed between reference signal of a source and stimulated Brillouin scattering signal in an optical fiber. By coupling a source with a few axial modes and an optical fiber ring resonator, Brillouin scattering is studied with a spectrum analyzer. Using reference beating signal of a source, we have reduced the Brillouin beating frequency from 13 GHz range to below GHz. Experimentally, we can see the Brillouin beating frequency from 13 GHz range to below GHz with a dispersion shifted fiber (1.32 GHz), Ti-doped fiber (900 MHz) and single mode optical fiber (870 MHz).   • We carried out the useful theoretical calculation for the optimum design of a 1.48 ${\mu}m$ diode laser pumped E$r^{3+}$ doped fiber amplifier. The model we established is based on the rate equations of three level laser system and the overlap integral between fundamental mode L$P_{01}$ and E$r^{3+}$ doped area. We determined several fiber parameters (N.A., V value, fiber length, E$r^{3+}$ concentration, cutoff wavelength etc.) for the optimum design of a high optical gain. We found that our theoretical results are very useful to the design of E$r^{3+}$ doped fiber used in EDFA.

  • A simple technique for a flexibly tunable and switchable dual wavelength-switchable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser using fiber Bragg gratings is proposed and demonstrated by using both linear cavity loss controlling and homogeneous gain broadening of the EDF. The oscillating wavelength switching is successfully realized by using the modulation of the acousto-optic modulator driven by the RF signal. The wavelength spacing and lasing wavelength of the proposed wavelength-switchable laser can also be controlled by using the bending-induced tension or compression strain. The proposed tunable dual wavelength-switchable fiber laser has a lot of advantages, such as a high extinction ratio larger than 40dB and a high tunability of ~7.2 nm/$m^{-1}$.

  • There are technical difficulties in measuring the numerical apertures of multi-mode gradient-index plastic optical fibers (GI-POFs) due to their strong speckle noise originating from dopants, non-uniformity of gradient-index profile, and multi-mode interference. Therefore, we propose a new method of obtaining the numerical aperture by controlling the size of the incident laser beam and measuring the numerical aperture of GI-POF. The results show that we can get a value for the numerical aperture of GI-POF very similar to that measured by the conventional method. We can also obtain the optimum launching condition of input beam and maximum coupling efficiency.

  • 친환경, 신 재생에너지 중 하나인 태양광은 크게 발전용과 조명용으로 사용될 수 있다. 자연채광시스템에 주요부품인 태양광을 전달하는 자연채광용 유리광섬유를 국내최초로 개발하였다. 적용된 자연채광시스템에 대해 소개하고 광섬유와 광케이블의 기본구조, 광학적 특성, 벤딩조건에 따른 조도변화 및 스펙트럼을 분석하였다. 조명용 뿐 만 아니라 식물성장용으로도 사용가능하여 지하농원 등의 적용이 가능하다.

  • 광통신 분야에서 광신호의 장거리 전송에 따른 세기 감소를 보강하기 위해 쓰이는 광섬유증폭기는 현재 1.3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ 대역, 1.45 $\mu\textrm{m}$ 대역 및 1.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$ 대역에서 작동하는 희토류 이온 첨가 광섬유 광증폭기가 개발되어 쓰이고 있다. 한편 ETRI에서는 기존 광통신에 쓰이는 광 증폭기에 추가해 더 넓은 파장대를 광통신에 쓸 수 있도록 하는 새로운 파장대역의 광 증폭기 구현을 가능케하고 나아가 광통신 용량을 기존보다 휠씬 더 큰 10 Tbps급 이상으로 늘이기 위해 1.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ 파장대인 U 밴드대 광증폭기용 광섬유인 Pr 첨가 셀레나이드 유리 조성의 신소재를 개발하였는데, 본 연구에서는 Ge-Sb-Ga-Se 계열의 Pr 첨가 셀레나이드 유리의 굴절률을 분광타원 법 (spectroscopic ellipsometry)을 사용하여 결정하였다.   • Coupling loss variation as the shape of fiber ends and the fiber arrangement in a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, formed with two optical fibers with dielectric mirror coatings on their ends, is analyzed. For the intended features it is assumed that one of two fibers is processed to have a concave mirror whose curvature is the same as that of the wavefront of the Gaussian beam from the first fiber. In this assumption, it was turned out that the coupling loss at the cavity length of 15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ is less than 0.5% even with tilt angle of 0.2$^{\circ}$, curvature error of 70 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, cavity length error of 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and lateral alignment error of 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Thus, low loss and high-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot filters whose cavity length is greater than several ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ can be obtained easily if the receiving fiber end is properly formed.
