  • The geochemical characteristics including minerals, major and trace elements chemistries of the Proterozoic, Jurassic and Cretaceous granites in Korea are systematically summarized and intended to decipher the origin and crystallization process in connection with the tectonic evolution. The granites in Korea are classified into three different ages of the granites with their own distinctive geochemical patterns: 1) Proterozoic granitoids; 2) Jurassic granites(cratonic and mobile belt); 3) Cretaceous-Tertiary granites. The Proterozoic granite gneisses (I-type and ilmenite-series) formed by metamorphism of the geochemically evolved granite protolith. The Proterozoic granites (S-type and ilmenite-series) produced by remobilization of sialic crust. The Jurassic granites (S-type and ilmenite-series) were mainly formed by partial melting of crustal materials, possibly metasedimentary rocks. The Cretaceous granites (I-type and magnetite-series) formed by fractional crystallization of parental magmas from the igneous protolith in the lower crust or upper mantle. The low temperature ($315{\sim}430^{\circ}C$) and small temperature variations (${\pm}20{\sim}30^{\circ}C$) in the cessation of exsolution of perthites for the Proterozoic and Jurassic granites might have been caused by slow cooling of the granites under regional metamorphic regime. The high ($520^{\circ}C$) and large temperature variations (${\pm}110^{\circ}C$) of perthites for the Cretaceous granites postulate that the rapid cooling of the granitic magma. In terms of the oxygen fugacity during the feldspar crystallization in the granite magmas, the Jurassic mobile belt granites were crystallized in the lowest oxygen fugacity condition among the Korean granites, whereas the Cretaceous granites in the Gyeongsang basin at the high oxygen fugacity condition. The Jurassic mobile belt granites are located at the Ogcheon Fold Belt, resulting by closing-collision situation such as compressional tectonic setting, and emplaced into a Kata-Mesozonal ductile crust. The Jurassic cratonic granites might be more evolved either during intrusion through thick crust or owing to lower degree of partial melting in comparison with the mobile belt granites. The Cretaceous granites are possibly comparable with a continental margin of Andinotype. Subduction of the Kula-Pacific ridge provided sufficient heat and water to trigger remelting at various subcrustal and lower crustal igneous protoliths.

  • Influences of shading and irrigation in summer hot pepper cultivation on the plant growth and mesophyll tissue were investigated. Hot pepper plants were exposed to three shade levels (0, $30{\pm}5$ and $80{\pm}5%$) and irrigated or non-irrigated in greenhouse condition. Plant height and leaf area were highest in 30% shading and stem diameter and fresh and dry weights were highest in no shading. Plant growth was better in rain shelters with irrigation than in those without irrigation. The numbers of hot pepper fruits in the beginning of harvest were 49 in rain shelters without irrigation and shading, 22 in those with irrigation and without shading, 5 in those without irrigation with 30% shading, and 1 in those with irrigation and 30% shading. However, 80% shading showed lowest flower number and flower abscission, resulting in no fruit set, regardless of irritation. This is because carbohydrate translocation from leaves to reproductive organs may be not enough for developing fruits due to the lack of sunlight. The yield of hot pepper tended to be higher in rain shelter with irrigation than in those without irrigation. In optical microscopy observation, the thickness and development of mesophyll tissues decreased as increasing the degree of shading but no effect of irrigation on mesophyll tissues was observed. When stomata were observed with scanning electron microscope (SEM), the shape of stomata was normal but tissues surrounding stomata were slightly wrinkled in plants grown under 30% shading. The large number of abnormal stomata and wrinkled leaves was observed among plants grown in rain shelters with 80% shading. In plants grown in rain shelters without irrigation, tissues surrounding stomata were wrinkled and 10-20% decrease in the number of stomata was observed. Therefore, in hot pepper cultivation in summer with high temperature, shading was not effective for fruit yield and mesophyll tissue development; if shading is unavoidable, high degree of shading is not advisable. Further studies are needed for appropriate cultivar selection and environment-control techniques in hot pepper cultivation in summer with high temperature.

  • There are around 7,500 manure tanks to treat the manures from pigs in Korea. In the tank, there are too much sediments deposited on the base and wall, which causes low efficiency of stock capacity and manure fermentation. In order to minimize sediments and to ferment manure effectively, we developed a 2-fluid jet mixer for mixing sediments in liquid livestock manure tank. For developing the prototype, we tested a factorial experimental system with various nozzles, and simulated CFD models with two kinds of nozzle arrangement. From the results of factorial experiment and CFD simulation, we concluded the dia. ratio of primary : secondary nozzle should be 1:2 and the nozzles should be arranged at the same distances toward to the circumferential direction. With this results, we manufactured a 2-fluid jet mixer which is consists of four 2-phase nozzles, centrifugal slurry pump and root's type air blower. And, we carried out the performance test of the prototype in the round shaped liquid manure tank in the farm. The performance test results showed that the uniformity of TS (Total Solid) and VS (Volatile Solid) was raised from 21.3 g/L, 13.3 g/L In steady state to TS and VS to 23.0 g/L, 14.1 g/L in the mixing operation. Therefore, we could conclude that the prototype of 2-fluid mixer could make the solid material which could be sediments in the tank not to be deposited in the tank and to be contacted to air bubbles which could enhance the efficiency of the fermentation of livestock manure.

  • BACKGROUND: In order to select a fungicide that can effectively control anthracnose disease in Japanese plum fruit, mycelial growth inhibition effect and spore germination inhibition effect of six fungicides were tested in vitro against six isolates of Colletotrichum acutatum and five isolates of C. gloeosporioides that were isolated from diseased Japanese plum fruit. METHODS AND RESULTS: Inhibitory effects of fungicides on mycelial growth were investigated after inoculating each isolate on potato dextrose agar amended with four discriminatory concentrations of each fungicide for 7 days at $25^{\circ}C$. For spore germination inhibitory effect, each isolate of the Colletotrichum spp. was cultured in potato dextrose agar for 7-14 days at $25^{\circ}C$. After adjusting the concentration of spores of each isolate to $1{\times}10^6mL^{-1}$ by diluting with 0.025% PDB, the spore suspension was mixed with each fungicide (1:4, v/v), and $60{\mu}L$ aliquots were dispensed to sterile hole slide glass. Hole slide glasses were placed in a humidified box and incubated for 15 hours at $25^{\circ}C$. Then, spore germination was observed under an optical microscope. At recommended concentration of fungicide prochloraz manganese showed the highest mycelial growth inhibitory effect and dithianon showed the lowest mycelial growth inhibition. The $EC_{50}$ values for the inhibition of spore germination by dithianon and pyraclostrobin were $0.069-0.126{\mu}g/mL$ and $0.37-1.59{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. Although benomyl, prochloraz manganese, azoxystrobin, and tebuconazole did not inhibit the spore germination, they appeared to restrain mycelial growth by abnormal growth of germ tube and mycelium after germination. CONCLUSION: Dithianon seemed to have preventive effect. Prochloraz manganese, azoxystrobin, and tebuconazole were likely to have control effect. Pyraclostrobin is considered to have both preventive and control effect against anthracnose disease of Japanese plum fruit.

  • Toxicities to many organs caused by humidifier disinfectants have been reported. Recently, humidifier disinfectants have been reported to cause cardiovascular, embryonic, and hepatic toxicities. This study was designed to investigate the toxic mechanism of humidifier disinfectants and compare toxicity in a cellular model and a zebrafish animal model. Because brain toxicity and skin toxicity have been less studied than other organs, we evaluated toxicity in a human dermal cell line and zebrafish under various concentrations of humidifier disinfectants that included polyhexamethyleneguanidine phosphate (PHMG), oligo-[2-(2-ethoxy)-ethoxyethyl-guanidinium-chloride] (PGH) and methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (CMIT/MIT). A human dermal fibroblast cell line was treated with disinfectants (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 16 mg L-1) to compare their cytotoxicity. The fewest PHMG-treated cells survived (up to 33%), while 49% and 40% of the PGH- and CMIT/MIT-treated cells, respectively, survived. The quantification of oxidized species in the media revealed that the PHMG-treated cells had the highest MDA content of around 28 nM, while the PGH- and CMIT/MIT-treated cells had 13 and 21 nM MDA, respectively. As for brain toxicity, treatment of the zebrafish tank water with CMIT/MIT (final 40 mg L-1) for 30 min resulted in a 17-fold higher production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) than in the control. Treatment with PGH or PHMG (final 40 mg L-1) resulted in 15- and 11-fold higher production, respectively. The humidifier disinfectants (PHMG, PGH, and CMIT/MIT) showed severe dermal cell toxicity and brain toxicity. These toxicities may be relevant factors in understanding why some children have language disorders, motor delays, and developmental delays from exposure to humidifier disinfectants.

  • This study aimed to determine the suitable of harvest time on the growth and quality of baby leafy vegetables (Agastsche rugosa O. Kuntze and Lepidium sativum L.) grown on rice seedling tray in a six-layered bench system at 30cm intervals in order to exploit the space during rice growing off-season. Seedlings were grown on the rice seedling tray for 10 days after sowing with coir substrate supplied with nutrient solution at EC $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ every 2 days prior to placing the tray on the bench, which were at $1^{st}$ (Low) layer above 20cm and $6^{th}$ (High) layer above 170cm apart from the ground. Growth and phytochemical contents were measured at 7-day and 14-day harvest time. During the culture periods, daily average of integrated solar radiation and temperature were $9.3{\sim}9.6MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$, $27.5^{\circ}C$ in the High layer and $5.1{\sim}6.2MJ{\cdot}m^{-2}$ in average, and $26.5{\sim}26.6^{\circ}C$ in the Low layer, respectively. For A. rugosa, the highest growth was observed in the Low layer bench at a 14-day harvest time, while their plant height in the High layer was shorter and the leaf number was lower. For L. sativum, the plant height, leaf length and width, leaf number and fresh weight were higher in the Low layer. For A. rugosa, a high yield was observed with the increase in integrated temperature and integrated solar radiation, while a higher yield of L. sativum was found with the increase in integrated temperature, but not with integrated solar radiation. For A. rugosa, both polyphenol and anthocyanin contents were higher in the High layer at a 14-day harvest time. For L. sativum, polyphenol contents were higher in the High layer, whereas no significant difference in anthocyanin and flavonoid contents was observed depending on the layer and harvest time. The highest chlorophyll content showed in Low layer at a 7-day harvest time in both A. rugose and L. sativum. All of the results suggest that in terms of growth and quality, it may be better growing in the high layer for 14 days after seedling in A. rugosa, and low layer for 7 days in L. sativum.

  • Due to various requirements for the user access control to large databases in the hospitals and the banks, database security has been emphasized. There are many security models for database systems using wide variety of policy-based access control methods. However, they are not functionally enough to meet the requirements for the complicated and various types of access control. In this paper, we propose a database security system that can individually control user access to data groups of various sites and is suitable for the situation where the user's access privilege to arbitrary data is changed frequently. Data group(s) in different sixes d is defined by the table name(s), attribute(s) and/or record key(s), and the access privilege is defined by security levels, roles and polices. The proposed system operates in two phases. The first phase is composed of a modified MAC (Mandatory Access Control) model and RBAC (Role-Based Access Control) model. A user can access any data that has lower or equal security levels, and that is accessible by the roles to which the user is assigned. All types of access mode are controlled in this phase. In the second phase, a modified DAC(Discretionary Access Control) model is applied to re-control the 'read' mode by filtering out the non-accessible data from the result obtained at the first phase. For this purpose, we also defined the user group s that can be characterized by security levels, roles or any partition of users. The policies represented in the form of Block(s, d, r) were also defined and used to control access to any data or data group(s) that is not permitted in 'read ' mode. With this proposed security system, more complicated 'read' access to various data sizes for individual users can be flexibly controlled, while other access mode can be controlled as usual. An implementation example for a database system that manages specimen and clinical information is presented.

  • The position of any point on the earth's surface can be. represented in the spherical coordinates by surface spherical harmonics. Since geomagnetic field is a function of position on the earth, it can be also expressed by spherical harmonic analysis as spherical harmonics of trigonometric series of $a_m({\theta})$ cos $m{\phi}$ and $b_m({\theta})$ sin $m{\phi}$. Coefficients of surface spherical harmonics, $a_m({\theta})$ and $b_m({\theta})$, can be drawn from the components of the geomagnetic field, declination and inclination, and vice versa. In this paper, components of geomagnetic field, declination and inclination in the Korean peninsula are obtained by spherical harmonic analysis using the Gauss coefficients calculated from the world-wide magnetic charts of 1960. These components correspond to the values of normal geomagnetic field having no disturbances of subsurface mass, structure, and so on. The vertical and total components offer the zero level for the interpretation of geomagnetic data obtained by magnetic measurement in the Korean peninsula. Using this zero level, magnetic anomaly map is obtained from the data of airborne magnetic. prospecting carried out during 1958 to 1960. The conclusions of this study are as follows; (1) The intensity of horizontal component of normal geomagnetic field in Korean peninsula ranges from $2{\times}10^4$ gammas to $2.45{\times}10^4$ gammas. It decreases about 500 with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in latitude. Along the same. latitude, it increases 250 gammas with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in longitude. (2) Intensity of vertical component ranges from $3.85{\times}10^4$ gammas to $5.15{\times}10^4$ gammas. It increases. about 1000 gammas with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in latitude. Along the same latitude, it decreases. 150~240 gammas with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in longitude. Decreasing rate is considerably larger in higher latitude than in lower latitude. (3) Total intensity ranges from $4.55{\times}10^4$ gammas to $5.15{\times}10^4$ gammas. It increases 600~700 gammas with the increament of $1^{\circ}$ in latitude. Along the same latitude, it decreases 10~90 gammas. with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in longitude. Decreasing rate is considerably larger in higher latitude as the case of vertical component. (4) The declination ranges from $-3.8^{\circ}$ to $-11.5^{\circ}$. It increases $0.6^{\circ}$ with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in latitude. Along the same latutude, it increases $0.6^{\circ}$ with the increment of l O in longitude. Unlike the cases of vertical and total component, the rate of change is considerably larger in lower latitude than in higher latitude. (5) The inclination ranges from $57.8^{\circ}$ to $66.8^{\circ}$. It increases about $1^{\circ}$ with 'the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in latitude Along the same latitude, it dereases $0.4^{\circ}$ with the increment of $1^{\circ}$ in longitude. (6) The Boundaries of 5 anomaly zones classified on the basis of the trend and shape of anomaly curves correspond to the geologic boundaries. (7) The trend of anomaly curves in each anomaly zone is closely related to the geologic structure developed in the corresponding zone. That is, it relates to the fault in the 3rd zone, the intrusion. of granite in the 1st and 5th zones, and mountains in the 2nd and 4th zones.

  • The Cr(VI) concentrations at the shallow aquifer well (MPH-0-1) of the Moonpyung groundwater monitoring station were in the range of 0.5 to 3.1 mg/L exceeding 10 to 62 times the guideline for drinking-water quality, indicating continuous contamination. However, Cr was not detected at the deep bedrock well and the other subsidiary monitoring wells except for MPH-1 and 6. Cross-correlation analyses were conducted for rainfall and groundwater level time series, resulting in the mean time of recharge after precipitation events to be 5.6 days. For rainy season, the water level was raised and the Cr(VI) concentration was several times lower than that during dry season at well MPH-0-1 well. Correlation of the Cr(VI) concentration with the groundwater-level showed that the Cr(VI) reduction was closely related with the groundwater-level rise in the well. However, the groundwater level rise during high water season induced the lateral migration of the Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater at well MPH-4. We enriched and isolated a chromium reducing bacteria, Enterobacter aerogenes, from the Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater in the wells MPH-0-1 and MPH-1. The bacteria may play an important role for immobilizing Cr(VI) in the Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater. Therefore, the migration of the contaminant (Cr(VI) must has been restricted because of the natural attenuation by microbial reduction of Cr(VI) in the groundwater. This research suggests that the bioremediation of the Cr(VI)-contaminated groundwater by the indigenous bacteria may be feasible in the Cr(VI) contaminated groundwater.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the biochemical properties of isolated bacteria, low temperature tolerant methanogens which were selected for use as inoculum for anaerobic fermentation of agricultural and livestock wasted at low temperature. The results, obtained were summarized as follows: Low temperature tolerant methanogens were isolated from the samples which showed the high methanogenesis rate by enrichment culture at low temperature in methanol medium. These methanogens, Methanobacterium M-251 and Methanobacterium M-253 were isolated from swampy sediment at latitude $56.9^{\circ}$, Methanosarcina mazei M-372 from lake sediment IV at latitude $55.0^{\circ}$ N, and Methanobacterium formicicum M-375 from tidal land soil at latitude $37.0^{\circ}N$, respectively. The isolated anaerobic bacteria could not use sugars as carbon sources. The optimum pH value for the growth of M-251 and M-375 was 6.8, but those for M-253 and M-372 6.5 and 7.0, respectively. The minimum growth temperature of isolated, M-251 and M-253 were $8^{\circ}C$ and the optimum temperature $30^{\circ}C$, while the minimum of M-392 and M-395 were $13^{\circ}C$ and the optimum $37^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of isolates at $17.5^{\circ}C$ were lower by 32-50% than that of $30^{\circ}C$. The isolated Methanobacterium strains such as M-251, M-253, and M-375 have lower cell yield, 0.38-1.21g/1M $CH_4$ than 1.14-1.51g/1M $CH_4$ of Methanosarcina mazei M-372.
