  • The geoid is the level surface that closely approximates mean sea level and usually used for the origin of vertical datum. For the computation of geoid, various sources of gravity measurements are used in South Korea and, as a consequence, the geoid models may show different results. however, a limited analysis has been performed due to a lack of controlled data, namely the GPS/Leveling data. Therefore, in this study, the gravimetric geoids are compared with the geodetic geoid which is obtained through the GPS/Leveling procedures. The gravimetric geoids are categorized into geoid from airborne gravimetry, geoid from the terrestrial gravimetry, NGII geoid(geoids published by National Geographic Information Institute) and NORI geoid(geoi published by National Oceanographic Research Institute), respectively. For the analysis, the geometric geoid is obtained at each unified national control point and the difference between geodetic and gravimetric geoid is computed. Also, the geoid height data is gridded on a regular $10{\times}10-km$ grid so that the FFT method can be applied to analyze the geoid height differences in frequency domain. The results show that no significant differences in standard deviation are observed when the geoids from the airborne and terrestrial gravimetry are compared with the geomertric geoid while relatively large difference are shown when NGII geoid and NORI geoid are compared with geometric geoid. Also, NGII geoid and NORI geoid are analyzed in frequency domain and the deviations occurs in long-wavelength domain.

  • As drought is phenomenon of nature with unavoidability and repeated characteristic, it is necessary to plan to respond to it in advance and construct drought management system to minimize its damage. This study suggested standard for classification of drought, which is appropriate for our nation to respond to drought by assessing drought severity in the regions for this study. For data collection, 61 locations were selected - the locations keep precipitation data over 30 years of observation. And data for monthly precipitation for 37 years from 1973 were used. Based on this, this study classified unified drought interval into four levels using drought situation phases which are used in government. For standard for classification of drought severity fit to our nation, status of main drought was referred and these are classified based on accumulated probability of drought - 98~100% Exceptional Drought, 94~98% Extreme Drought, 90~94% Severe Drought, 86~90% Moderate Drought. Drought index (SPI, PDSI) was made in descending order and quantitative value of drought index fit to standard of classification for drought severity was calculated. To compare classification results of drought severity of SPI and PDSI with actual drought, comparison by year and month unit were analyzed. As a result, in comparison by year and comparison by month unit of SPI, drought index of each location was mostly identical each other between actual records and analyzed value. But in comparison by month unit of PDSI for same period, actual records did not correspond to analyzed values. This means that further study about mutual supplement for these indexes is necessary.

  • Regional rainfall quantile depends on the identification of hydrologically homogeneous regions. Various variables relevant to precipitation can be used to form regions. Since the type and number of variables may lead to improve the efficiency of partitioning, it is important to select those precipitation related variables, which represent most of the information from all candidate variables. Multivariate analysis techniques can be used for this purpose. Procrustes analysis which can decrease the dimension of variables based on their correlations, are applied in this study. 42 rainfall related variables are decreased into 21 ones by Procrustes analysis. Factor analysis is applied to those selected variables and then 5 factors are extracted. Fuzzy-c means technique classifies 68 stations into 6 regions. As a result, the GEV distributions are fitted to 6 regions while the lognormal and generalized logistic distributions are fitted to 5 regions. For the comparison purpose with previous results, rainfall quantiles based on generalized logistic distribution are estimated by at-site frequency analysis, index flood method, and regional shape estimation method.

  • A spatial downscaling method using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) Regression for 25 km Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Monthly precipitation is proposed. The nonlinear relationship among hydrometeorological variables and precipitation was effectively depicted by the SVM for predicting downscaled grid precipitation. The accuracy of spatially downscaled precipitation was estimated by comparing with rain gauge data from sixty-four stations and found to be improved than the original TRMM data in overall. Especially the positive bias of the original TRMM data was effectively removed after the downscaling procedure. The spatial distributions of 25 km and 1 km grid precipitation were generally similar, while the local spatial trend was better detected by 1 km grid precipitation. The downscaled grid data derived from the proposed method can be applied in hydrological modelling for higher accuracy and further be studied for developing optimized downscaling method incorporation other regression methods.

  • This study attempted to evaluate the spatial characteristics and applicability of the predicted ensemble rainfall data used for heavy rain alarms. Limited area ENsemble prediction System (LENS) has 13 rainfall ensemble members, so it is possible to use a probabilistic method in issuing heavy rain warnings. However, the accessibility of LENS data is very low, so studies on the applicability of rainfall prediction data are insufficient. In this study, the evaluation index was calculated by comparing one point value and the area average value with the observed value according to the heavy rain warning system used for each administrative district. In addition, the accuracy of each ensemble member according to the LENS issuance time was evaluated. LENS showed the uncertainty of over or under prediction by member. Area-based prediction showed higher predictability than point-based prediction. In addition, the LENS data that predicts the upcoming 72-hour rainfall showed good predictive performance for rainfall events that may have an impact on a water disaster. In the future, the predicted rainfall data from LENS are expected to be used as basic data to prepare for floods in administrative districts or watersheds.

  • In this study, water supply for Geum River Basin was calculated by regulating the future water supply of Dam with the future expected discharges. HadGEM2-AO, which is the climate change prediction model that KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) recently introduced was used for this study. The data of weather stations within the Geum River basin was extracted with the new Greenhouse Gas RCP scenario. The runoff of Geum river basin was simulated using the ArcSWAT for the 1988~2010 period. After validating the model, the similarity of results between simulation and observation at the Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam was 92.25% and 95.40%, respectively, which shows a good agreement with observed data. As the result of analysis for the discharges, the discharges would increase 47.76% under the RCP4.5 scenario and 36.52% under the RCP8.5 scenario. Water balance analysis was conducted by the KModSim for predicting the water supply under the runoff variation. We analyzed the volume of water intake with national standard of water supply 95% by Dam Operation Manual. By the analysis under RCP4.5 scenario, $9.41m^3/s$, $24.82m^3/s$ of additional water supply is available on Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam. By the analysis under the RCP8.5 scenario, $6.48m^3/s$, $21.08m^3/s$ of additional water supply is available on Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam.

  • We measured salinity and $^{222}Rn$ concentration to explore submarine spring along the coastal areas (Mundongri, Icheon-ri, Jukseong-ri, Daebyeon-ri, Yeonhwa-ri, and Dadae-po) including Ilkwang Bay of Busan Metropolitan City in 2009 and 2010. Before field observation, we selected the potential and possible locations of submarine spring based on the lineament distribution and rose diagram analysis. Salinity and radon concentration were measured within the 1~2 km from the coastal lines. Radon activity decreased gradually from onshore to offshore. Vertical profiles of salinity at some stations showed lateral transport of water mass characterized by low salinity. Vertical profiles of salinity in the Ilkwang Bay, which is a unique bay in the south-eastern coastal area of Busan Metropolitan City, also showed the occurrence of low salinity in the bottom seawater. Our results suggest the possible occurrence of submarine discharge of fresh groundwater in the coastal areas around Busan Metropolitan City. In the future, intensive research should be conducted for the exploration methods of submarine spring as well for the possible utility of submarine groundwater as alternative water resources.

  • To obtain informations on vertical movements of water and solute in rice paddy field during the growing season, soil water contents and bulk electrical conductivities (${\sigma}_a$) were monitored using Time Domain Reflectometry. Soil water contents with depth showed ${\varepsilon}$-shaped profiles constituting of partly saturated zones at top and bottom layers and unsaturated zones (20-100cm) between them. Analysis by fitting with a van Genuchten-type model showed that soil water contents at 60cm were affected by both water supplied from surface water and groundwater, but at 80cm mainly affected by groundwater. Water percolation at the rate of 2cm $day^{-1}$ rates were, but large fluctuation from 10 to 38cm $day^{-1}$ in C1 layer (60-90cm). Therefore, it can be said that any water or solute entering C1 layer is very rapidly transported to C2 layer, especially during the period of high groundwater table staying, and retarded to a relatively constant percolation rate in C2 layer. This can be manifested by the fact that rapid decrease and steady increase of electrical conductivities at 50 and 110cm depth respectively, were found around that period.

  • In this study, we examined the sea surface temperature (SST), air temperature (AT), and their time lag in response to an extreme cold wave in 2018 and a weak cold wave in 2019, cross-correlating these to the northern wind direction frequency. The data used in this study include SST observations of seven ocean buoys Real-time Information System for Aquaculture Environment provided by the National Institute of Fisheries Science and automatic weather station AT near them recorded every hour; null data was interpolated. A finite impulse response filter was used to identify the appropriate data period. In the extreme cold wave in 2018, the seven locations indicated low SST caused by moving cold air through the northern wind direction. A warm cold wave in 2019, the locations showed that the AT data was similar to the normal AT data, but the SST data did not change notably. During the extreme cold wave of 2018, data showed a high correlation coefficient of about 0.7 and a time lag of about 14 hours between AT and SST; during the weak cold wave of 2019, the correlation coefficient was 0.44-0.67 and time lag about 20 hours between AT and SST. This research will contribute to rapid response to such climate phenomena while minimizing aquaculture damage.
