Although many studies have investigated the effectiveness of concept mapping and the learning cycle, in Korea none have explored the effectiveness of concept mapping and the learning cycle combined. This study explored the effectiveness of concept mapping, the learning cycle, and a combination of concept mapping/learning cycle(CL) in high school biology class. Students' science achievement, the science related attitudes and scientific inquiry ability was measured. The results indicated that concept mapping, the learning cycle, and CL treatment were significantly different from the traditional one in science achievement(p< .05). However, the three treatments were not significantly different from each other. No significant difference exists among different learnings in high and average-ability students. But, concept mapping was the most effective in low-ability students. For the students' scientific inquiry ability, CL and learning cycle were more effective than concept mapping and traditional learning. No significant difference exists among different learnings in high-ability students. CL and learning cycle were more effective than concept mapping and traditional learning in average and low-ability students. For the students' science related attitudes, concept mapping, the learning cycle, and CL were more effective than the traditional learning. But, there was no significant difference among these three groups.
The purpose of this study was to analyze 'how STEAM activities affect students' science process skills and science-related attitudes'. For more accurate, we have set 31 sixth-grade students from Gyeong-gi Province as an experiment group, and another 31 as a comparative group. We developed a STEAM program based on the educational concepts: Creative Design and Emotional Touch. Through pre-post experiment design, we have introduced TSPS, and Test of Affective Aspects. For TSPS, the comparative group scored higher average grade before the process. After the process, however, the experiment group exceeded the other. The result was considerable enough to verify that the science process skills were bolstered through the STEAM program(p<.05), Similar result was derived regarding the science related attitude. Students in the comparative group originally showed higher degree of interest to science. When the STEAM program was carried out, the standing reversed. The increase in the number of science related attitude indicates the program valid(p<.001). Furthermore, when we asked the students who participated in the experiment how they recognized the STEAM activity, we received positive answers: they consider the program efficient and well suited to the class environment. Conclusively, the STEAM program was proven to be effective for improving science process skills and attitude, and was perceived affirmative.
This study aimed to examine the effects of a science-learning program based on data visualization on the science inquiry and creative problem-solving abilities of elementary school science-gifted students. Accordingly, this research developed a data visualization science-learning program using Tableau, which had twelve sessions. The subjects encompassed 61 students in three gifted classes taught by the researcher. The scientific inquiry ability test and creative problem-solving ability test modified to suit the environment and situation were given to the subjects before and after the treatment. The results confirmed that science learning based on data visualization had no significant impact on basic science inquiry skills. Among the subdomains, significant results were obtained only in the reasoning subdomain. Moreover, integrative inquiry ability was significantly affected, unlike basic inquiry abilities. Among the five subdomains, significant differences were observed in three subdomains (data conversion, data interpretation, and variable control). However, concerning the generation of hypotheses and the control of variables, students exhibited confusion regarding the process of variable control and the exact concept of hypothesis development. This study also evaluated the effects of the program's application on creative problem-solving abilities and found a significant impact. Additionally, it was significantly different in all four subdomains. The results were interpreted to be owing to the students' mastery of Tableau's features, collaborative learning through discussion and debate, and the thematic impact of the data visualization program emphasizing procedural thinking. Finally, this study presented implications for science learning based on data visualization and the future direction of education.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of portfolio instruction on the creativity and scientific inquiry ability of 6th-grade students in science classroom. Four classes were sampled from an urban elementary school in southern part of Seoul. Two classes were assigned to experimental group and the other two classes to control group. Portfolio instruction was administered to the experimental group for 10 weeks, and traditional instruction to the control group. Data on students' creativity and scientific inquiry ability were collected prior to and after the treatment for both groups. Students' perception on portfolio instruction was investigated with experimental group after the treatment. The results of this study are as follows: (1) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on creativity; (2) Students' originality, one of sub-domain of creativity, showed marked increase after portfolio instruction; (3) Portfolio instruction had a significant positive effect on scientific inquiry ability; (4) Integrated inquiry ability, a sub-domain of inquiry ability, improved meaningfully after portfolio instruction; and (4) Students' perception on portfolio instruction is very positive.
Enhancing creativity is possible to offer systematic education programs and several conditions as variable thinking, experiment lesson, opened-situation. We developed CNP model as program for enhancing creativity. The CNP model emphasizes that parts of problem finding, embodying and solving ability and includes scientific problem finding tool, Integrated Process Skills and Science Writing Heuristic. The CNP Model is comprised of six step. We developed teachers' guide and student's worksheets for application. Result of applied CNP model to students of scientifically gifted education center in K University, students were able to enhanced originality and fluency and had solved problems by creative way. And creative problem finding, embodying and solving ability were increased. Therefore, the CNP model was effective in enhancing the creativity of scientifically gifted.

As research results, male schoolchildren were found to solve problems more easily in the area of basic process skills while female schoolchildren were found to solve problems in the area of integrated process skills. Schoolboys showed the high tendency to solve problems in a planning pattern by memory, or solving pattern in which they are fully aware of the contents of both questions and choices in answer sheets, or the pattern which they are fully aware of distracters in answer sheets; in contrast, schoolgirls showed a high tendency to get a good result by analyzing both questions & choices in answer sheets or analyzing a chart, graph and illustration, which explains that female schoolchildren tend to solve problems in more diverse ways than male schoolchildren. In case of a poor achiever, male schoolchildren tend to make a failure while trying to find answers in an inadequately understood state or trying to solve on mistaken memories while doing questions immediately while female schoolchildren showed a lot of solving patterns based on mistaken memories or wrong analyses of a chart, illustration, or graph. Such results are believed to offer the implications on the understanding of male/female schoolchildren in their problem-solving pattern of their exploratory ability in elementary science and on its subsequent program development.
Science field trip is a comprehensive learning activity in which students can solve problems by themselves, whose importance is emphasized in learning for the gifted. But because not much study has been done yet on this, and convergent activities such as solving too many problems or requesting given answers have generally been done, it has been criticized for not being enough to develop the abilities of gifted Students. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the activity process of the gifted through field trip to which open inquiry is adapted so that the demands of the gifted can be met, and the abilities of the gifted can be brought out. The study focused on 18 gifted elementary science students at Institute of Science Gifted Education, Cheongju National University of Education, and in the field trip process of the students, analyzed the types of establishment of inquiry problems and inquiry process, and the behavioral characteristics of gifted science students shown during field trip activity through field trip proceedings, transcript contents, poster materials, questionnaires, etc. As a result, more inquiry problems were established after than before inquiry, and the level of inquiry problems was also higher after inquiry. The solution process for inquiry problems of the gifted science students were done in the following order: planning, inquiring, follow-up inquiring and consolidating. But it proceeded to open inquiry process, the next stage being decided according to circumstances. Also, in the inquiry that the students did, diverse factors were revealed such as basic and integrative inquiries, and especially, the students were competent in analyzing the results after transforming and interpreting them. And the analysis of the interaction among the students showed many behavioral traits of talented science students.
