  • In this paper, the illuminance of elementary, junior, and senior high school in Inchon was measured and analyzed to investigate their night illuminating circumstances(classrooms, science rooms, and laboratories). More than four schools were selected based on the years elapsed(l0, 20, and 30 years, etc) since the opening of the schools. It was shown that the average illuminance for the classroom and that for science room and laboratory have been improved significantly such that the former was 235.6[lx] (260[lx] for senior high school, 208[lx] for junior high school, 203[lx]) for elementary school) and the latter was 233.7[lx](248.8[lx] for senior high school, 216.4[lx] for junior high school, 207.8[lx] for elementary school). The uniformity of the illuminance was exceedingly worse than the recommended one(the average value for the classroom and that for sciense room and laboratory were 0.95 and 1.08, respectively). It was found that the maximum to minimum illuminance ratio with respect to illumination derivative(7.9 for classroom, 6.8 for scienceroom or laboratory) was very high for most school buildings and was much higher for the old ones. From the measured results, it was shown that the illuminance for the school buildings needs to be improved with regard to quality.

  • This study investigated the factors affecting the procedures of becoming a scientist. Interview was used as a research method for deep understanding of individual career choice procedures. Interviews for individual scientists were conducted for about 60 minutes in their offices and all the interviews were tape-recorded. A total of 34 scientists who received some representative science awards in Korea during 1990 - 2001 were sampled. They were all men. But the interview was conducted with 30 scientists. The investigation was based on the framework that was composed of the following four categories: personal ability, home environment, school environment, and sociocultural environment. And each category had several factors as follows: personal ability consisted of the meta-ability to figure out the aptitude and the self-ability and the achievement; home environment consisted of parents, brothers and sisters, relatives, and hobby; school environment consisted of teachers, friends, club activity; sociocultural environment consisted of event, mass media, social recognition and social prospect. From the analysis of the career choice procedure of the scientists it was appeared that the meta-ability for personal ability, the parental influence particularly by father for home environment, science teacher and professor for school environment, and social prospect for sociocultural environment were important. In conclusion, most of the scientists made an important decision for their future career when they were the 12th grade and 1st year in university, and they considered intrinsic factor such as self-interest and aptitude and extrinsic factor such as social prospect. However intrinsic factor related to science teacher and professor and extrinsic factor related to fathers' advice.

  • In this study, a data science class plan was designed for the high school credit system in general high schools. Since it is difficult to secure class hours in elementary and middle schools or general high schools, learners cannot freely take new subjects such as data science. Therefore, a lesson plan was designed based on the ADDIE model for 15 students who applied for data science at general high schools in A city. Through this study, it was possible to design the data science class according to the learning method.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate science high-school students' creativity and scientific attitude when an integrated science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) project themed 'lighting of quantum dot solution' was applied to them. The subjects were a one team composed of 3 students in the 11th grade desiring to participate in the Korea Science Exhibition. They began with a scientific inquiry related to the physical properties of the QD solution and then gradually showed the process of expansion of their ideas into the integration of engineering, technology, and mathematics. Also, during the process, they showed problem solving ability and scientific attitudes, such as cooperation, endurance, and satisfaction of accomplishment.

  • Physics image and interest are factors that influence physics learning. Freshmen enter an engineering college under various learning conditions when they were in high school. Understanding physics image and interest according to characteristics of freshmen will help college physics education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physics image and interest of freshmen in an engineering college according to their gender and physics course completion in high school and discuss the educational implications of college students on physics learning. The subjects of the study are 664 first grade students in engineering college. We analyzed physics image and interest of students according to gender and physics course completion in high school. Physics image is analyzed using semantic analysis. As a result of the analysis, the physics image is different according to the physics course completion. Interest in Physics depends on gender and physics course completion. Finally, we discuss the educational implications of college physics learning for engineering students.

  • This study investigated the effects of taking elective science courses in high school on studying science at the university level. The research methods undertaken for this study included surveys of college students in science areas. For physics and biology major students, no significant differences in achievement in the basic courses at the university level were found between the groups that took only Science I courses and the group took Science I and II courses. For chemistry major students, achievement for the group that took Chemistry I and II courses was significantly higher in the basic courses, while no significant differences between the two groups was found in the advanced courses. The perceptions of college students regarding the effects of their science learning experience in high school on learning science at the university level were investigated. All the college students perceived that whether or not they took Science II courses in high school, it did not affect their learning in basic science courses in college. They also perceived that students were able to overcome difficulties by making extra effort even if they did not take Science II courses in high school.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of experimental learning using the small-scale chemistry (SSC) on high school students' academic achievement, scientific attitude and science-related attitude in high school chemistry I. For this study, two high school 2nd grade classes were divided into an experimental group and a control group. Experimental learning using the SSC in the experimental group, traditional experimental learning presented in the textbook in the control group were performed. The results showed that experimental learning using the SSC compared to traditional experimental learning was effective in improving academic achievement. The experimental learning also was effective in improving voluntary, patience, cooperativity in the scientific attitudes and social implications of science, attitude for science curriculum, attitude toward science in the science-related attitudes. Therefore, experimental learning using the SSC is necessary to actively utilize in high school chemistry curriculum.

  • This study is intended to reconsider the meaning of the education for gifted/talented children, the foundation object of science high school by examining the behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students in open-end mathematical problem solving and to provide the basis for realization of 'meaningful teaming' tailored to the learner's level, the essential of school education. For the study, 8 students (4 gifted students and 4 talented students) were selected out of the 1 st grade students in science high school through the distinction procedure of 3 steps and the behavior characteristics between these two groups were analyzed according to the basis established through the literature survey. As the results of this study, the following were founded. (1) It must be recognized that the constituent members of science high school were not the same excellent group and divided into the two groups, gifted students who showed excellence in overall field of mathematical behavior characteristics and talented students who had excellence in learning ability of mathematics. (2) The behavior characteristics between gifted students and talented students, members of science high school is understood and a curriculum of science high school must include a lesson for improving the creativity as the educational institutions for gifted/talented students, unlike general high school. Based on these results, it is necessary to try to find a support plan that it reduces the case which gifted students are generalized with common talented students by the same curriculum and induces the meaningful loaming to learners, the essential of school education.

  • This study was to examine the concepts using to explain evaporation and boiling in secondary school science textbooks developed in 6th and 7th science curriculum. The types of explanations were compared with maps represented the concepts relationships divided into middle and high schools, 6th and 7th curriculum, and subjects and chapters to find explanation diversity. The difference of explanations related to evaporation and boiling concepts was found in the school levels and subjects. There were few relationships between the main concepts of evaporation phenomena and those of boiling phenomena.
