  • This study analyzes the effectiveness of government supported R&D program for SMEs by measuring TFP improvements. We estimate TFP for Korean companies from 2011 to 2018 using Levinsohn and Petrin (2003) method which reduces endogenous problem. Then government R&D beneficiary companies were extracted from the NTIS and linked to TFP estimates. The empirical results are as follows. First, as a result of estimating production function, the contribution of TFP to value-added is more important than in the past. Second, the TFP gap between large firms and SMEs continues to wide and there is no sign of easing.(from 3.72 times in 2011 to 5.23 times in 2018). Third, SMEs beneficiaries show higher TFP level than non-beneficiaries. However their TFP was on the decline until government support. After government supported R&D program, it reverses upward. Fourth, although one-year TFP improvement of beneficiaries is bigger than non-beneficiaries, it is smaller than the control group through PSME. Because SMEs participating in government R&D programs had showed downward trend of TFP until R&D program, it is necessary to examine whether there is a fundamental discordance between the demand of SMEs for R&D program and governments policy goal. More sophisticated program design will be required to escape the recognition that government R&D programs for SMEs are just charity.

  • As a series of studies to develop pest management system for sweet persimmon production matched with the quarantine criterion of sweet persimmon-imported county, a survey was conducted by questionnaire on pest management practice and scheme of increasing income in sweet persimmon farms in Korea. Above 80% of sweet persimmon farmers was over fifties in age. The greatest limiting factor for sweet persimmon production was thought to be disease by the farmers. Percentage of farmers who answered that the most important pest is anthracnose cause by Gloeosporium kaki, and stink bugs was 64.6% and 73.5%, respectively. In particular, the farmers did not consider Dichocrocis punctiferalis, a main targer insect for quarantine in USA, as serious problem. Obtaining information on pest management practice or decision-making on both selection of pesticide and time of pesticide application depended highly on their own experience with the highest proportion. Eight to nine times of pesticide applications a year was highest among farms with 56.6%. More than 80% of farmers recorded the diary of pesticide application. farmers considered increasing cost for pest management as the greatest problem with 35.4% in proportion, and 34.5% of farmers pointed out that increase in export is essential for increasing farm income with highest proportion.

  • As a part of integrated study for technical communication between consumer and manufacturer of functional clothing, functional clothing consumers were categorized based on their perception of the functional outdoor jacket and the differences in the source of information and use of hang-tag were examined according to the groups. Questionnaire survey was conducted on 472 males and females in their 20s to 60s, who have experience of purchasing functional outdoor jackets. Perception of functional outdoor jackets was classified into four factors ('functionality', 'price', 'experience/knowledge' and 'brand/design') and the respondents were categorized into three groups according to the factors: 'unconversant/brand & design pursuing group', 'conversant/function pursuing group' and 'high-priced products preferring group'. 'Unconversant/brand & design pursuing group' was composed of high rate of office workers and students in their 20s and 30s who use internet most frequently as source of information while 'conversant/function pursuing group' was composed of high rate of professionals in their 40s and 50s who make the most frequent use of information on hang-tag. 'High-priced products preferring group', which has high rate of the elderly in their 60s and housewives, obtain their information mainly from salespersons. 'Unconversant/brand & design pursuing group' was satisfied with functional information more than other two groups and 'conversant/function pursuing group' concerned for the hang-tag and required more explanation of terminology used in hang-tag. The results effectively explained the features of consumer groups and their different responses toward the information of functional outdoor jacket.

  • Flower color is one of the main target traits in the flower breeding. Recently, technological advances in genetic engineering have been successfully reported the flower colors, such as blue roses and blue carnations that are impossible to develop by traditional breeding. Accumulated knowledge-based approaches for flavonoid biosynthesis enabled to introduce novel and unique colors into flowers. These flower color modifications have been made through the regulation of flavonoid metabolic pathway - control of endogenous gene expression and introduction of foreign genes to produce novel and specific flavonoids - and the introduction of transcription factors that are known to regulate sets of genes being involving in the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway. More empirical regulation of the flavonoids metabolism requires the understanding for regulatory mechanism of intrinsic flavonoids depending on the flower crops and the very sophisticated control of flavonoid metabolic flow. In this review, we summarized successful examples of flower color modification. It might be useful to deduce the strategy for the creation of exquisite colors in flower plants.

  • Different from other ontology languages, TopicMap is capable of integrating numerous amount of heterogenous information resources using the locational information without any information transformation. Although many conventional editors have been developed for topic maps, they are standalone-type only for writing XTM documents. As a result, these tools request too much time for handling large-scale data and provoke practical problems to integrate with legacy systems which are mostly based on relational database. In this paper, we model a large-scale topic map structure based on XTM 1.0 into RDB structure to minimize the processing time and build up the ontology in legacy systems. We implement a topic map platform called X-TOP that can enhance the efficiency of ontology construction and provide interoperability between XTM documents and database. Moreover, we can use conventional SQL tools and other application development tools for topic map construction in X-TOP. The X-TOP is implemented to have 3-tier architecture to support flexible user interfaces and diverse DBMS. This paper shows the usability of X-TOP by means of the comparison with conventional tools and the application to healthcare cancer ontology management.

  • The power production using renewable energy is more important because of a limited amount of fossil fuel and the problem of global warming. A concentrative photovoltaic system comes into the spotlight with high energy production, since the rate of power production using solar energy is proliferated. These systems, however, need to sophisticated tracking methods to give the high power production. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical tracking system using modular Bayesian networks and a naive Bayes classifier. The Bayesian networks can respond flexibly in uncertain situations and can be designed by domain knowledge even when the data are not enough. Bayesian network modules infer the weather states which are classified into nine classes. Then, naive Bayes classifier selects the most effective method considering inferred weather states and the system makes a decision using the rules. We collected real weather data for the experiments and the average accuracy of the proposed method is 93.9%. In addition, comparing the photovoltaic efficiency with the pinhole camera system results in improved performance of about 16.58%.

  • A variety of creative convergence education studies have been conducted around the world, but the study of creative convergence education based on problem-oriented learning is insignificant. STEAM education development research for engineering human resources also recognizes important factors like ethics awareness and consideration, cooperation, leadership, and communication skills. This study developed a model of interdisciplinary classes between marketing and commercial English classes as a way to effectively learn to cultivate the creative and fusion talents required by modern society. A model was developed for the process of convergence classes to be developed for evaluation after class by designing courses, selecting subjects, designing classes, drawing questions, and developing problems, as well as for discussion of pre-convergence courses, class performance, and class evaluation. The Mongolian university discussed in this paper plans to introduce a suitable educational environment by developing a problem for interdisciplinary classes in marketing and business English. Based on the need to nurture talent required by the rapidly changing knowledge-based society, Mongolian universities should continue the strategy of fostering creative convergence talent through the convergence of technology. This is because creativity is the most important thing in the current situation.

  • We are imitating animals. True imitation can be defined as a learning to do an act from seeing it done by others. We have been building culture by imitating others' skills and knowledge with high fidelity. In this regard, it is important to ask how the faculty of imitation has evolved and how imitation behaviors develop ontogenetically. It is also interesting to see whether nonhuman animals can imitate truly or not and how different imitation learning is among human and non-human animals. In this paper, first I review empirical data from imitation studies with human and nonhuman animals. Comparing different species, I highlight their different levels of copying fidelity and explain the reason why they are showing the difference. Then I review recent studies on neurobiological mechanisms underlying imitation. The initial neurobiological studies on imitation in humans suggested a core imitation circuitry composed of mirror neuron system [inferior parietal lobule(IPL) and inferior frontal gyrus(IFG)] and the posterior part of the superior temporal sulcus(pSTS). More recent studies on the neurobiology of imitation, however, has gone beyond the studies on the core mechanisms. Finally, I try to find out implications of psychology and biology of imitation for cultural evolution. I argue for a memetic approach to cultural evolution, along the lines with a recent study on measuring memes by mirror neurons system.
