Theoretical Considerations on Analytical Framework Design for the Interactions between Participants in Group Argumentation on Socio-Scientific Issues (사회 속 과학 쟁점에 대한 소집단 논변 상호작용 분석을 위한 방법론 고찰)

  • This study aims to design a framework for analyzing group argumentation in terms of participants' interaction. Regarding the current group argumentation setting as argumentation on socio-scientific issues within participants who have had limited experience on group argumentation, the analytical framework was designed to explain (1) what was each participant's role on group argumentation, (2) how these roles were changed within each time of argumentation, and (3) how the patterns of interaction were changed through seven times of a series of argumentation on socio-scientific issues. Based on the literature review on analytical framework of argumentation in science education including the works on the structure of argumentation, the discourse formation through interaction, and the linguistic approach on participants' interaction, the current research framework was built. Showing the results of applying the designed framework on group argumentation as an example, strength of using the current designed framework was discussed.

A Systematic Review of The Health Promotion for Workers; Participatory Action Research and Community Based participatory Research (근로자의 건강증진에 대한 체계적 문헌고찰 참여적 실행연구와 지역사회기반 참여연구 중심으로)

  • This study investigated a systematic literature review on local and international literatures focusing on Participatory Action Research(PAR), Community Based Participatory Research(CBPR) in workplace and community. Eighty percent of the 10 studies reviewed included research involving health professionals, community networks, workers, and university researchers. Health promotion programs varied from health and safety awareness, smoking cessation, diabetes management, physical activity, self-efficacy enhancement, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders and mental health. PAR, CBPR are required to participate actively in research through community collaboration to promote health. We can solve problems at the community level. And identified sustainable effects when developing and implementing a health promotion program. PAR and CBPR are expected to continuously pursue change by adjusting the scope of individuals, organizations, communities, and institutional dimensions. They are also expected to be implemented for workers in the various workplace.

The Change of Elementary Science Gifted Students' Perception about Engineers and Engineering Practices through Science and Engineering Integrated (SEI) Lessons (과학공학 융합 수업을 통한 초등 과학 영재 학생들의 공학과 공학자에 대한 인식 변화)

  • This study is to investigate how science and engineering integrated (SEI) lessons affect science-gifted students' perceptions about engineers and engineering practices. Twenty elementary science gifted students participate in this study, and they reflect what engineering practice means such as managing limited time and budget. The SEI lessons with 24 hours class time are used as an intervention. The main data are collected with 'engineer and engineering drawing test', open-ended questions and interviews about the drawing, and focus group interviews about the lessons. The transcribed interview data are analyzed using mixed methodology of quantitative (descriptive and paired t-test) and qualitative methods. The result shows that the SEI lessons have positive impacts on the science-gifted students' perceptions about engineers and engineering practices such as engineering design. After the lessons, the students perceive engineering and engineers in a desired way such as engineering as a social practice that many experts work collaboratively, the interaction between engineering and society, and the importance of ethics and social values in engineering practice.

Depictions of Scientists and Teachers' Perceptions of the 2015 Revised Elementary School Science Authorized 3rd-4th Grade Textbooks from the Perspective of Gender Equality (양성평등의 관점에서 살펴본 2015 개정 초등학교 과학과 3~4학년군 검정 교과서의 과학자 제시 실태 및 교사의 인식)

  • This study analyzes the depictions of scientists and teachers' thoughts on the 2015 revised elementary school science authorized 3rd-4th grade textbooks from the perspective of gender equality, and suggest improvements for the 2015 elementary school science authorized 5th-6th grade textbooks as well as a 2022 revised elementary school science curriculum. The data consist of representations of scientists found in seven elementary science textbooks provided to 3rd- and 4th-grade students in 2022 as well as in-depth interviews conducted with three elementary school teachers and responses from 32 teachers in Gyeonggi-do. Of the 23 scientists depicted in the textbooks, three (13.0%) are female and 10 (43.5%) worked in the inquiry domain, which was the largest group. When the teachers were asked about their perceptions of the gender ratio of scientists in the textbooks, their answers revealed that they had lower perceptions of female scientists compared to male scientists; moreover, they had no or very little teaching experience concerning female scientists. Furthermore, the teachers' thoughts on improving the gender ratio of scientists depicted in the textbooks differed considerably by the teachers' gender. Based on these findings, it was concluded that during the process of producing textbooks, writers and members of society need to agree on the gender ratio of scientists to be represented, and a social consensus is needed to identify and introduce the achievements of previously unknown female scientists towards gender equality.
